"We watched helplessly as the plague consumed the planet."
"King T’Challa sacrificed himself to destroy Thanos and the Infinity Stones he wielded. In doing so, he saved reality itself."

The "Zombie Outbreak" Universe is an alternate reality where society on Earth collapsed due to the outbreak of a Zombie Virus.

History[]

Life Before the Outbreak[]

"Last year, Mr. Stark asked me to join the Avengers. I turned him down, and now they're all gone."
Spider-Man[src]

The Avengers were a popular group of superheroes consisting of Iron Man, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, Black Widow, Thor and Captain America. Due to the team's many heroics they began to get many fans among the world, with people like Kate Bishop admiring them. Apart from the Avengers, there were also many solo heroes active during this time, such Spider-Man and Moon Knight. In 2017, Tony Stark invited Peter Parker to be a member of the Avengers but he turned Stark down. In her childhood, Kate's mother always expected something bad to happen, so she prepared a safe house and resources. After losing her mother to the Quantum Realm, Hope Van Dyne began to do anything in her power to get her back, not thinking of the consequences.[1][2]

Zombie Apocalypse[]

Infection Begins[]

Ant-Man - Death (W105)

Ant-Man is infected

"Like too many great catastrophes, this one sprang from a place of love and hope."
Watcher[src]

While Janet van Dyne was trapped in the Quantum Realm, she contracted a Quantum Virus which transformed her into a Zombie. Years later, when her husband Hank Pym journeyed into the Quantum Realm to rescue his long lost wife, van Dyne bit him and infected her husband as well. Using Pym's Quantum Vehicle, the two returned Earth where Ant-Man and the Wasp were waiting for them. When Hope van Dyne went to greet her parents, Hank Pym attempted to bite her. van Dyne was able to dodge his attack however and Pym and Janet van Dyne infected Ant-Man instead.[1]

Pym particles at Hank Pym's lab began to go haywire during the outbreak, causing people, animals, and zombies to grow to colossal sizes, leading to catastrophic destruction throughout San Francisco. In the city's Chinatown, Shang-Chi and Katy Chen arrived to rescue the latter's mother, only to find the entire district burning. FBI Agent Jimmy Woo arrived on the scene to evacuate Chen and Shang-Chi, along with other survivors, but they were surrounded by zombies before they could make an escape.

In the nick of time, the Ten Rings arrived with heavily armed helicopters, opening fire on the zombie hordes. Descending to the city streets, Xu Wenwu and Death Dealer assisted Woo and Shang-Chi in fighting off the zombies. Though Wenwu ordered his son to board the helicopter, Shang-Chi hesitated, wanting to try and rescue more civilians. Due to his hesitation, Shang-Chi was bitten by a zombie, forcing Wenwu to transfer the Ten Rings to him to prevent Shang-Chi from becoming a zombie. Left unarmed, Wenwu was quickly overwhelmed and allowed himself to be devoured by the zombie horde.

Though Chen, Shang-Chi, Woo, Death Dealer, and a myriad of other survivors escaped with the Ten Rings, most were less fortunate.[3] With the virus infecting the entire Pacific Northwest in a day, the Avengers and Black Panther took a Quinjet to San Francisco in hopes of controlling the outbreak. However, their attempted heroism only helped the virus spread further, as all of the Avengers became infected themselves.

Black Panther was rescued by Vision. Vision's reasons for saving the Wakandan king weren't altruistic however, as he planned to slowly feed T'Challa to his zombified girlfriend, Wanda Maximoff.

Vision would also capture the zombified Ant-Man and successfully use the Mind Stone to cure his decapitated head from the virus, placing it under a glass dome once cured. He had previously attempted to cure Maximoff but was unable to due to her powers. Realizing how dangerous Maximoff was and unable to bring himself to kill her, Vision decided to keep her contained in Camp Lehigh and sent out distress signals to lure in survivors so that Vision could feed them to Maximoff.

Spider-Man, Winter Soldier & Kurt

Spider-Man's orientation video

Meanwhile, the Wasp would assemble a group of survivors consisting of Kurt Goreshter, Sharon Carter, Happy Hogan, the Winter Soldier, Spider-Man, and Okoye who came to the United States of America in search of T'Challa. The group would eventually make their way to New York City where Spider-Man helped create a headquarters using Synthetic Webbing to suspend as series of train cars and buses high into the air. He would also make an orientation video for new members of their group.[1]

Bifrost Hulk What If Zombies

The Hulk travels to Earth

"Don't eat me, don't eat me, don't eat..."
"Hey, relax. I'm your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man."
"Oh, yeah? Well, then, what the hell happened to the neighborhood?"
Bruce Banner and Spider-Man[src]

Weeks following the other Avengers became infected, Hulk narrowly escaped the clutches of Thanos and was sent hurtling towards Earth via the Bifrost Bridge. Crash landing in the New York Sanctum, the Hulk would revert back to Bruce Banner. Finding the Sanctum deserted, Banner would steal a set of sorcerer's robes and put them on before heading out into the street.

While the street was initially deserted, Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian would soon arrive in search of the Time Stone. Getting ready for a battle, Banner attempted to transform into the Hulk but he refused to come out. Seeing Iron Man, Doctor Strange, and Wong, Banner was initially relieved until he realized that the trio were Zombies that had just infected Maw and Obsidian. The Zombies then attempt to attack before the Cloak of Levitation swoops in and staves off Banner's attackers.

While the Cloak is able to protect Banner initially, Maw soon used his telekinetic abilities to suspend Banner in the air. Just before Banner was about to be feasted on by Maw, Obsidian, and Iron Man, the Wasp summoned a horde of flying Ants to eat the flesh off of the Maw, Obsidian, and Strange before decapitating Iron Man. Banner is then rescued by Spider-Man who takes him back to the survivor group's home base and shows him So You Wanna Survive the Zombie Apocalypse.[1]

Ambush at the Grand Central Terminal[]

The Zombie Outbreak Survivor Group arrive at Grand Central Terminal

"Hope, Banner, Parker, track seven. See if you can hot-wire the train."
"Sounds like job for criminal. I will help."
"Uh, splitting up? Do you guys just not have horror movies in Wakanda?"
Okoye, Kurt Goreshter and Spider-Man[src]

The Zombie Outbreak Survivor Group incepted a signal coming from Camp Lehigh that someone had found cure to the Quantum Virus. Wanting to investigate, the team headed to Grand Central Terminal to hijack a train. There the group split into three teams, with one going to hotwire the train while the other two guarded the perimeter.

Zombie Hogan is vaporized by Carter

Sharon Carter kills Happy Hogan

The first team was successful in finding a train, but the Wasp was unable to restart the engine without momentum. This gave Spider-Man the idea to use his webs to create slingshot to give the train the momentum it needed. Elsewhere in the terminal, Happy Hogan was attacked and infected by a zombified Hawkeye forcing Sharon Carter to kill Hogan. Meanwhile, Winter Soldier and Okoye were attacked by a zombified Falcon although Okoye was able to cut him in half with her spear.

Spider-Man (What If Zombies)

Spider-Man holds onto the train

Successfully creating the needed thrust to get the train moving, Spider-Man held it in place until Carter, the Winter Soldier, and Okoye could arrive. As Spider-Man kept the train in place, a Zombie horde began to crowd around him. Luckily for him, the Cloak of Levitation and the Wasp were able to keep the horde away from him until the others boarded the train. Once Bruce Banner started the train's engine, the Cloak of Levitation flung Spider-Man through a window and onto the train.[1]

Attack on the Escape Train[]

Captain America is bisected by Winter Soldier

"Sorry, pal. I guess this is the end of the line."
Winter Soldier to Captain America[src]

While the Zombie Outbreak Survivor Group was on their way to Camp Lehigh, a zombified Captain America boarded the train and attacked Sharon Carter. Hearing Carter's screams the Winter Soldier rushed to her aid. Duking it out with his former friend, the Winter Soldier was able to disarm the captain, using Captain America's Shield to slice him in two. While Captain America would survive the attack, he would fall off the train.

Spider-Man, Wasp & Okoye

The Wasp becomes infected

With Sharon Carter now infected, the Wasp would shrink down and go inside of Carter via her mouth before expanding, killing Carter. Due a cut on her arm being exposed to the zombified insides of Carter, the Wasp would slowly begin to become infected as well. Not wanting to risk their safety, the Wasp instructed her teammates to kill her but they refused.[1]

Battle of Camp Lehigh[]

The Wasp sacrifices herself

"You have awakened her. She hasn't eaten in days."
Vision[src]

The Zombie Outbreak Survivor Group made it just outside of Camp Lehigh before their train ran out of fuel. Needing to get through a horde of Zombies to make it the camp, the Wasp volunteered to grow big and carry her teammates to the base before the infection fully set in. The Wasp was able to successfully carry her fellow survivors to base before passing out and becoming overwhelmed by the army of Zombies. The team is then greeted by Vision who takes them inside.

Winter Soldier, Spider-Man & Kurt

The Zombie Outbreak Survivor Group meet a cured Scott Lang

Inside, Vision informs the team that the Zombies are adverse to a frequency emitted by the Mind Stone. He tells the group that targeted exposure to the frequency cure beings of the Quantum Virus, introducing them to a cured Scott Lang as proof of his work. Upon Bruce Banner and Okoye suggesting that they broadcast the frequency world wide from Wakanda, the Winter Soldier searches the base for a means of transport.

While searching the base, the Winter Soldier finds a zombified Wanda Maximoff. He begins to shoot at her before Black Panther tells him to stop. Finding him laying on a surgical table with one of his legs amputated, the Winter Soldier asks Black Panther to explain to him what happened as he takes him back up to meet with the others. Learning of Vision's true goal from Black Panther, the Winter Soldier confronts him before the Scarlet Witch breaks out of her containment and attacks them. As the group, alongside Black Panther and Vision, attempt to flee the base both Kurt Goreshter and Okoye are lost to the Scarlet Witch.

Vision briefly trapped the Scarlet Witch under rubble before informing the group of a Quadjet's location. Vision then ripped the Mind Stone out of head, killing himself. With the Mind Stone in tow, the remaining survivors rushed to the hanger housing the Quadjet, with the exception of the Winter Soldier who stayed behind to distract the Scarlet Witch who had just freed herself from the rubble.

Hulk vs Zombie Witch

The Hulk battles Wanda Maximoff

This distraction was largely unsuccessful however as the Scarlet Witch soon flung the Winter Soldier off into the distance. Needing to buy his group more time, Bruce Banner was finally able to transform into the Hulk again, battling the Wanda Maximoff as the rest of the survivors took off. While a now fully infected Wasp was able to grab on to the Quadjet, the group was able to escape and they flew off to Wakanda. Unbeknownst to the group, however, a zombified Thanos had collected five of the six Infinity Stones and infiltrated Wakanda, infecting its populace.[1] Hulk, meanwhile, eventually escaped from Maximoff and turned back into Bruce Banner.[citation needed]

Battle of Wakanda[]

FInding Wakanda overrun by zombies, the three survivors attacked the zombie Thanos. Incredibly powerful due to weilding five of the six Infinity Stones, Thanos was nonetheless unable to use the stones to their fullest potential due to the limited intelligence of his infected brain. As he battled with Black Panther, Scott Lang, and Spider-Man, however, Thanos began to grow more intelligent and adept with the use of the stones. Realizing the might of the Reality Stone, Thanos used it to summon a horde of zombies from underground, overwhelming the heroes.

Before the zombies could devour them, however, the three heroes were rescued by the arrival of Thor Odinson, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot. The three newcomers brought with them Stormbreaker, an enchanted Uru axe weilded by Thor and designed specifically to kill Thanos. Thor threw the axe, embedding it in Thanos' chest, but the zombified Titan was unharmed. Thor, Rocket, and Groot then charged at Thanos, but were met by a massive blast from the Power Stone. The blast incinerated Groot instantly, reduced Rocket to nothing but his skull, and knocked Thor unconscious.

Thanos then used the Space Stone to tear up the ground, revealing the Vibranium Reactor beneath Wakanda. Recognizing the might of Stormbreaker, Spider-Man used synthetic webbing to grab the weapon from Thanos' chest and hurl it back at the Titan's head, but Thanos intercepted the weapon with another blast from the Power Stone, seemingly destroying the axe. Though Spider-Man was able to crush Thanos under one of the large rocks he'd lifted from the Earth, the zombified Titan was unharmed and quickly recovered, overwhelming Spider-Man and Scott Lang with the power of the Infinity Stones.

Black Panther, using the Mind Stone, successfully bested Thanos in a one-on-one fight, only for Thanos to use the Space Stone to teleport the Mind Stone out of Black Panther's hands and into his own. Placing the stone in his gauntlet, the zombie Titan was overwhelmed by the combined power of the six Infinity Stones. Knowing that a zombified Thanos with all six stones was an unstoppable threat to reality itself, Black Panther siezed the Titan's moment of incapacitation to charge Thanos and knock him into the exposed Vibranium Reactor.

Though Black Panther's sacrifice was successful in destroying Thanos and the Infinity Stones, it caused a colossal storm of Infinity Energy to erupt from the spot, expanding outward rapidly and destroying everything in its path. Spider-Man and Scott Lang were rescued at the last second by the sorcerers of Kamar-Taj. Thor survived and escaped the Infinity Storm and returned to New Asgard, left apathetic and depressed by his failure to defeat Thanos.[citation needed]

Stopping the Infinity Storm[]

The storm of Infinity Energy continued to expand outward from Wakanda, annihilating everything in its path. Its vast energies filled the Earth's upper atmosphere, creating a barrier that prevented signals from entering or leaving. Seeking to contain the storm before it destroyed the entire planet, the Masters of the Mystic Arts turned to Bruce Banner. As Hulk was created by the same gamma radiation that made up the bulk of the Infinity Energy, they hoped that he could absorb the Infinity Storm into himself.

Traveling to Paris, France, just as the city was engulfed by the storm, Banner transformed into Hulk and successfully absorbed the storm into his own form, stopping its spread, though the energy in the upper atmosphere preventing communication remained. Due to the massive amounts of absorbed energy, Hulk became an anchor. He took on an incredibly powerful new form known as Infinity Hulk, and stood motionless on the spot containing the near-infinite might he now held.[citation needed]

Multiversal Encounters[]

Zombie Portal

Doctor Strange summons Zombies

"Zombies! Great idea. I love Zombies."
"It's not them. It's what came with the Zombies."
Thor and Doctor Strange[src]

During a battle with another universe's Ultron, a Doctor Strange from a separate alternate universe would open a portal to this one, dumping a pile of Zombies on top of Ultron.[4] Later, this universe's Wanda Maximoff was kidnapped by Strange and taken to the Sanctum Infinitum. There, Strange planned to use the Scarlet Witch, alongside other "Universe Killers", to power the Forge and recreate his universe which he previously destroyed. Alongside the other prisoners, she was eventually freed by Captain Carter and Kahhori and returned to this universe.[5]

War of the Dead[]

Having returned to her own reality, the zombified Wanda Maximoff gradually became self-aware. She began mind-controlling zombies in a bid to raise an army powerful enough to defeat Infinity Hulk and claim his power for herself. Five years after the start of the zombie outbreak, three survivors in New York City—Kate Bishop, Kamala Khan, and Riri Williams, accompanied by the AI F.R.I.D.A.Y. controlling an Iron Man suit—witnessed the crash of a S.H.I.E.L.D. Quinjet, discovering a single zombie inside with a small device inside his stomach.

Analyzing the device, the survivor group discovered it was a transmitter, shrunken by Pym Particles. Made as part of a S.H.I.E.L.D. initiative called Project Lifeshot, it was intended as a last-ditch effort to save the planet from the zombie plague. However, a S.H.I.E.L.D. motherboard would be required to fully decipher the device and its function. Driving in Williams' modified car, the Uhura, the three set off for the North Institute, a S.H.I.E.L.D. base in Ohio. En route, they came across the Valley of the Broken Gods. Oblivious to the reason for the valley's existence, the survivors decided to cut through it rather than drive over the mountains.[citation needed]

Battle in the Valley of the Broken Gods[]

In the valley, however, the three were caught in the crossfire of the duel between Ikaris and a zombified Captain Marvel. Their vehicle destroyed, the group was soon set upon by the zombie Captain Marvel, who vaporized Kate Bishop as the three tried to flee. Overrun by zombies, Riri Williams commanded F.R.I.D.A.Y. to get Kamala Khan to safety, and the AI obeyed. Despite Khan's protests, F.R.I.D.A.Y. took her far away from the battle, then returned to assist Williams.

Soon, however, the zombified Captain Marvel came after Khan, with Ikaris in pursuit, forcing Khan to flee. Under Captain Marvel's relentless assault, Khan was eventually knocked unconscious, but was rescued by Blade Knight before she could be vaporized. Khan's dreams were invaded by Wanda Maximoff, now known as the Queen of the Dead, who sought to use Khan and her abilities as a conduit to reshape the entire world in her own image once she'd gained the power of Infinity Hulk.

When Khan awoke, she explained to Blade Knight the importance of getting the Transmitter to the North Insitute, so the Avatar of Khonshu took her there. Arriving at the North Institute, they found the base controlled by Melina Vostokoff, Yelena Belova, Red Guardian, and the Black Widows, who use Red Dust to control zombies and use them as protection. Analyzing the Transmitter, Vostokoff determined that it was designed to contact the Nova Corps, who S.H.I.E.L.D. believed could cure the zombie plague. However, due to the fallout of the Infinity Storm, the device would need to be transported to space before it could be used.[citation needed]

Siege of the North Institute[]

Seeking Khan, the Queen of the Dead sent an army of zombies to the North Institute led by a zombified Okoye. Though the survivors' own controlled zombies and the base's defensive minefield kept the horde at bay, a zombified Abomination hurled zombies through the air and over the walls of the base. Among the zombies that infiltrated the base in this way were a zombified Ghost, and the legless zombie Captain America. Though Red Guardian was able to vanquish Captain America, Ghost massacred the Black Widows, and Abomination breached the base's defenses.

Forced to retreat, the survivors attempted to flee the base through a secret exit, only to be overwhelmed by zombies. Taking control of the zombies using the Red Dust, Melina Vostokoff stayed behind and sealed the doors so the others could escape. Not long afterwards, the zombie Okoye arrived, took control of the zombies back from Vostokoff for the Queen of the Dead, and killed Vostokoff with a Vibranium spear. The zombie Ghost then phased through the doors and attacked the other survivors, only for Blade Knight to duel and eventually kill her.

Despite being pursued by Abomination, the survivors successfully escaped the North Institute. Hoping to find a spaceship, they set off for New Asgard. However, due to having no way of crossing the ocean to reach it, they first traveled to New Orleans to board Baron Zemo's City on the Sea, hoping the submarine could provide them transport.[citation needed]

City on the Sea[]

Also traveling to New Orleans was a convoy led by Shang-Chi, Katy Chen, Jimmy Woo, and Death Dealer. Having spent the last five years roaming from place to place to escape the zombie hordes, they were bringing with them a large number of cows in hopes that their tribute would earn them a place aboard the City on the Sea. Though their convoy was attacked by a group of Skrull bandits, they fended off the would-be thieves effortlessly and arrived at New Orleans not long after the survivors of the Siege of the North Institute did.

Despite his hatred of heroes, Baron Zemo allowed the two survivor groups to board the City on the Sea provided they respect the peace he intended to instill. With that, the City set sail into open waters. However, it fell under attack by an army of zombified Talokanil, led by a zombie Namor and controlled by the Queen of the Dead. Hoping to satiate Namor's hunger, Zemo sealed Kamala Khan, Red Guardian, Yelena Belova, and Blade Knight in their room and ejected them out of the City, only for Khan to project a Noor sphere to save them from drowning.

Namor, however, grabbed on to the sphere and slammed it back into the opening in the City where the heroes had been ejected from, breaching the City's defenses. Uniting with Shang-Chi's survivor group, the heroes attempted to defend the City's inhabitants from Namor and the Talokanil, but found them unstoppable and were forced to flee. Activating a Hulk Containment Chamber to hold Namor off, Baron Zemo loaded as many people as possible into escape pods and launched them.

As Zemo and the heroes boarded their own escape pod, however, they found it unable to launch due to a system failiure. Yelena Belova left the pod and activated a manual override to let the others escape. Though Namor was killed by Kamala Khan, Belova was unable to return to the pod, and went down with the City on the Sea. Deciding to assist Khan, Blade Knight, and Red Guardian in their quest to contact the Nova Corps, Baron Zemo, Shang-Chi, and the others agreed to set course for New Asgard.[citation needed]

The Feast at New Asgard[]

At New Asgard, Wanda Maximoff arrived disguised as an uninfected human. Calling herself the Red Queen, she brought the Asgardians a massive feast, asking in return that they assist her in defeating Infinity Hulk, who she claimed was the true ruler of the zombie armies. However, Thor, the king of New Asgard, refused to speak or even move from his throne, still dejected from his failiure to defeat Thanos. When the band of survivors who'd escaped the sinking of the City on the Sea arrived at New Asgard, they were turned away by Valkyrie, for they had no invitation to the feast.

However, Khonshu spoke through Blade Knight, insisting that his avatar and his companions be allowed entry. Recognizing Khonshu, Valkyrie happily obliged. Inside, Red Guardian split off from the group to join the Asgardians in their feasting and revels. However, the heroes then encountered Wanda Maximoff, who attempted to sway them to her side. Refusing to believe Maximoff, Kamala Khan attempted to warn Thor and Valkyrie of the Red Queen's subterfuge, but Thor was unresponsive and Valkyrie did not believe her.

Despite Valkyrie's disbelief, however, Maximoff admitted that Khan was right, and then revealed her true plan: The food she'd brought had been zombie parts disguised via magic, and all of the Asgardians—along with Red Guardian. The nigh-invincible Asgardian zombies overwhelm and devour Jimmy Woo, Death Dealer, and Baron Zemo, as the remaining heroes flee alongside Valkyrie to New Asgard's one spaceship— the Commodore. Aboard the ship, the survivor band attempted to escape New Asgard, but were pulled back by Maximoff's powers.

Before Maximoff could destroy the Commodore, however, she was attacked by Thor, who had finally regained motivation to fight. Revealing her true, undead form, the Queen of the Dead attacked Thor. Insisting that the Commodore escape without him, Thor held the Queen back while the spaceship escaped from New Asgard. Eventually, Maximoff successfully defeated Thor, and he was infected with the zombie plague.[citation needed]

Meeting With the Nova Corps[]

Once the Commodore reached outer space, its crew used the transmitter to calibrate its frequencies and contact the Nova Corps. They received an answer far sooner than expected, however, when a massive fleet of Nova Corp ships revealed themselves directly in front of them. The Nova Corp revealed that they already knew about the zombie plague, and had placed the planet under quarantine to prevent it from spreading to other worlds. To ensure the Commodore did not leave Earth, the Nova Corp attacked the small ship and destroyed it.

However, the survivors aboard the Commodore were once again saved by a Noor sphere projected by Kamala Khan. Though the sphere cracked and burned upon re-entry to the Earth's atmosphere, it held up long enough that by the time it broke, those inside were at a low enough altitude to avoid being killed by the cold of space or the heat of re-entry. Before they could crash into the ground and meet a sudden end, the survivors were rescued by the Masters of the Mystic Arts, who were seeking heroes to help defend Infinity Hulk from the Queen of the Dead.[citation needed]

Appearances for the "Zombie Outbreak" Universe

Trivia[]

  • This reality is based on the Marvel Zombies limited series written by Robert Kirkman. While in the comics, the original source of the outbreak was the "Hunger" and the original infector was Sentry, What If...? has the source being a virus in the Quantum Realm and Janet van Dyne the original infector.
  • Despite not being mentioned or seen, a Variant of Heimdall must exist in this reality, as Bruce Banner is sent to Earth via the Bifrost, a sacrificial act which Heimdall made in the main reality.
  • There is very likely a Variant of this universe, as when Strange Supreme summoned hordes of zombies to fight Infinity Ultron in What If... The Watcher Broke His Oath?, Captain America and Falcon were shown to be in a mostly intact state. Additionally, Ultron destroyed the zombie horde, which included both Hawkeye and Wanda Maximoff, both of whom returned in Marvel Zombies.
  • Blade Knight mentions that Khonshu's former avatar succumbed to the plague. Due to the Outbreak spanning half a decade, this could refer to either Marc Spector or Arthur Harrow.
  • Though the definitive divergence between this universe and the Sacred Timeline is Janet van Dyne's infection, it seems Thanos' attack on Xandar wasn't as devastating in this universe, as the Nova Corps had enough manpower to fully quarantine Earth by 2023.
