The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, commonly referred to as SFR Yugoslavia or simply as Yugoslavia was a country located in Southeastern and Central Europe. The country existed between 1918 and 1992, with Belgrade as its capital city.
History[]
World War II[]
Yugoslavia appeared on Johann Schmidt's map of European capitals he intended to destroy with his Tesseract-powered weapons.[1]
Cold War[]
- "I got fragged by an I.E.D. outside of Sarajevo."
- ―John Garrett[src]
During the Cold War, CIA sent Nick Fury on a mission in Belgrade.[2]
In 1990, S.H.I.E.L.D. assigned Agent John Garrett to Yugoslavia. During a mission in Sarajevo, he was critically wounded by an improvised explosive device. Garrett then called S.H.I.E.L.D. asking for medical evacuation, but the agency responded that they were unable to do so, resulting in Garrett developing a disdain for his employers. He then took his intestines, placed them back with his body and used duct tape to keep the wound closed. He was able to leave the country shortly after and return home, and his experiences in Yugoslavia caused him to join HYDRA and become the first recipient of Project Deathlok.[3]
