James Howlett, more commonly referred to as Logan, was a formidable mutant with retractable claws and powerful regenerative abilities which earned him the name, Wolverine. Upon having adamantium coated onto his skeleton in his adulthood, Logan became an honorable member of the X-Men, and several years later, he sacrificed his life to save his daughter, Laura.
Biography[]
The X-Man[]
Origins[]
Logan was born as a mutant in Canada and grew up there alongside his half-brother, Victor Creed, though the two brothers eventually grew to become enemies. His mutation manifested itself in the form of a powerful healing factor and two pairs of three claws in his forearms that come from between his knuckles.[2] In his adulthood, he was subjected to intense torture through an experiment to give him an adamantium-coated skeleton.[4] As Wolverine, he faced off against Weapon XI at the Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station until the battle was interrupted by Deadpool rewriting time and killing Weapon XI, leaving Logan confused.[2]
A Righteous Death[]
Logan became a member of the X-Men and was very well regarded among the world. However, as he got older, his abilities became harder to manage and his self-healing factor began to fail him.
In 2029, he found out that he had a biologically engineered daughter called X-23, though she called herself Laura, created via experiments with his DNA. In North Dakota, as X-23 was being hunted, he sacrificed himself to save her when he was impaled through his chest on a tree. Logan then peacefully died while holding Laura's hand, knowing that he had secured her safety not before telling her to not become what she was created to be. In his final moments, Logan calmly acknowledged the feeling of death.[2]
Legacy[]
Corpse Desecrated[]
- "Look, we know the title of this thing, so I know what you're wondering. How are we gonna do this without dishonoring Logan's memory? And I'll tell you how... We're not."
- ―Deadpool[src]
Logan's body was buried in the same forest he died in, with his wooden headstone positioned as an "X". Due to his heroics, Wolverine became widely regarded as a selfless hero from his universe. Deadpool always wished to team up with him, and even personnel in the Time Variance Authority, such as Mr. Paradox, viewed him in high regard, to the point of memorizing his dying words.
Due to his status as the Anchor Being of his own universe, Logan's sacrificial death caused the timeline to begin unraveling, a process which would take tens of thousands of years. Despite this, Paradox and his rogue faction of the TVA planned to use the Time Ripper to give a much earlier death to the universe. This brought Deadpool into direct conflict with Paradox's forces.
In an attempt to save his world, Deadpool time-traveled to the 2030s and desecrated Logan's grave in North Dakota by digging up his corpse, convinced that Logan could not be dead due to his healing factor. However, Deadpool found, to his anguish and horror, that Logan had died; his body now decomposed down to its adamantium skeleton. When the TVA came to arrest Deadpool, he used the skeletal remains of Wolverine as a makeshift arsenal against the Minutemen before using a Timedoor to travel to other timelines in search of a suitable new anchor.
As a result of his Wolverine being deceased, Deadpool instead sought out a version of the hero from an alternate universe to replace him; while met with violent rejection with nearly every encounter, he ended up getting his wish when he found and teamed up with a dejected, alcoholic Wolverine Variant, who was not the hero Deadpool thought him to be. Eventually, while traversing the Void, the depressed Wolverine crossed paths with Laura and reiterated he was not a hero and that she had the wrong guy. Despite the alternate Wolverine's insistence on his incompetence, Laura used her Logan's story to motivate the depressed Wolverine into aiding her and joining the Resistance, simply telling him that her Logan was always the wrong guy until he was not.[2]

Trivia[]
- In 20th Century Fox's X-Men film series, James Howlett is a mutant who joined his half-brother Victor Creed in many wars throughout decades. They eventually joined Team X, created by William Stryker. Once that ended, Wolverine started a life in the wilderness with his lover, Kayla Silverfox. However, Silverfox is soon killed by Creed, in an effort to draw Wolverine out for Stryker. Stryker eventually gets Wolverine and subjects him to experiments, coating his skeleton in adamantium. Wolverine then learns that Silverfox was in on it the whole time and was alive. However, Silverfox followed Howlett and turned on Stryker. Eventually, Howlett defeated Weapon XI before Stryker shot him with an adamantium bullet, causing Howlett to lose all of his memories. Howlett then started a new life under the name Logan. Years later, Logan joined the X-Men and took down Magneto in various plots, losing his love interest, Jean Grey, along the way as he was forced to kill her. Wolverine also reunited with old foes like Stryker and Silver Samurai, defeating them both. Eventually, Wolverine was approached by Charles Xavier and Magneto who helped bring Logan back in time to stop the Sentinels from being created. In the past, Logan was able to stop this, causing a future different than the one he knew. Now years later, Charles Xavier had a seizure, killing many mutants. An old and brittle Logan, whose powers became weaker, took care of Xavier, but had his life derailed when he learned he had a daughter, Laura. Wolverine sacrificed himself for Laura in order for her to live on without the threat of her creators.
Behind the Scenes[]
- Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues the live-action incarnation of the character from 20th Century Fox's X-Men film series, who was also portrayed by Hugh Jackman with Troye Sivan as a younger Wolverine; he is the first live-action incarnation of the character.
- Upon announcing the film, Reynolds and Jackman quickly assured fans that despite Jackman's early promise to retire from Wolverine, Deadpool & Wolverine will not retcon the emotional events of Logan, claiming that the former film takes place before the latter's 2029 setting; Jackman even reached out to Logan writer-director James Mangold to inform him that their film would not be contradicted in any ways, as he felt it was important to preserve the finality of Logan.[5]
- Feige was actually nervous over seeing Jackman back in the role and he advised him to not come back to "undo" the ending of Logan, but accepted Jackman's insistence after a long drive to return once he pointed out that the Wolverine he would play wouldn't be exactly the same Logan one.[6] This is shown how in Logan, the X-Men were long since dead, while in this Wolverine's world, the X-Men were still alive and thriving.
- In order for Wolverine to return, Jackman said that Marvel Studios came up with a plot device to move around the timelines and not mess the continuity of Fox's films.[7]
- Retrospectively, Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy regret not having made Wolverine's teeth of adamantium, as the rest of Wolverine's bones were filled with it and teeth are part of the skeleton, with Reynolds admitting months later that it irks him and Levy suspecting they could receive fan backlash by the most detailed fans.[8]
