- "Exactly what kind of a lawyer are you?"
"A really good one." - ―Yusuf Khan and Matt Murdock
With Interest is the fifth episode of the first season of Daredevil: Born Again.
Synopsis[]
A day in the life of Matt Murdock gets intense, forcing him to team up with a familiar face.
Plot[]

As New York City celebrates St. Patrick's Day, Matt Murdock goes to New York Mutual Bank to get a loan for Murdock & McDuffie's expansion. He meets with Yusuf Khan, who talks to Murdock about his daughter, but ultimately says that the bank cannot approve a loan, due to the firm tending to represent people pro bono and not getting enough net profit. As Murdock walks away, Devlin and his men prepare to rob the bank, so Luca could pay his $1.8 million restitution to Wilson Fisk. The robbers break into the bank and order the civilians to stand down, taking them as hostages, while Khan tries to sneak away but gets found soon.

Murdock talks to Kirsten McDuffie about their loan getting rejected, before he hears the commotion at the bank and rushes back there, telling McDuffie to call the police. Murdock walks into the bank and plays up his blindness, so the robbers take him hostage as well. Devlin demands to see the absent bank manger, before setting on Khan who was an assistant manager, telling him to open the vault for them. As Devlin and his men see the New York City Police Department arriving, Murdock correctly guesses that Khan does not know how to open the vault and only agreed out of fear.

As the police surrounds the bank, Angie Kim assumes the command and acts as a hostage negotiator to communicate with Devlin and deal with the situation. Following a brief back and forth, Devlin demands three armored APVs to be delivered on short notice, or he will start executing the hostages. Kim tells Devlin to release a few hostages as a sign of good faith and he chooses to release Belinda and Murdock. The latter urges Devlin to let Belinda's husband go instead and although he initially refuses, after a brief talk about Murdock's Irish heritage and life in an orphanage, Devlin eventually agrees.

As the robbers take Khan away to open the vault, Murdock overhears Johnny Santini talking about the bank only having safety deposit boxes and no cash. While Khan stalls the time for him, Murdock asks one of the robbers to accompany him to the restroom, before incapacitating him. The robbers soon figure out that Khan was lying, but Murdock arrives in time to save him and tricks Devlin, buying them some time. Murdock uses his hearing to open the vault, claiming that they cannot go back to Devlin empty-handed and needed something from the vault.

Kim tells Devlin that due to the streets being blocked by a celebrating crowd, they cannot get the transport in time. Devlin does not care for her explanations and decides to taunt her, saying that if Kim can tell him a funny joke and make him laugh, he might give her more time. Kim scrambles to ask other officers for any ideas and then comes up with a crass joke about a priest and a leprechaun, to which Devlin laughs and gives Kim ten minutes before he starts killing hostages. Meanwhile, Khan open a deposit box with a key that the robber had and finds a diamond that Devlin was seeking.

Murdock and Khan return to the robbers, and Murdock tells Devlin to release the hostages while he still can. Murdock then shows him the diamond and after a brief he stand off, he throws a diamond to Devlin at the same moment the SWAT raids the bank. In the subsequent chaos, Devlin disguises himself as a police officers and gets out of the bank, leaving his associates behind and giving the diamond to Selene, who was their accomplice all along. As the SWAT neutralizes the robbers, Murdock puts on the robber's mask and catches up to Devlin, brutally beating him down, while Selene discovers that Murdock replaced the diamond with a candy before handing it over.

Later, Khan tells Murdock that the police failed to find the diamond as Devlin did not have it on him. Khan still cannot approve the loan, but suggests brainstorming ways to make Murdock & McDuffie more profitable together, inviting Murdock to have a dinner with his family in Jersey City. The two shake hands and Murdock walks away, before Khan discovers the missing diamond in a candy bowl.

Trivia[]
- This is the only episode in the first season of Daredevil: Born Again to have no new scenes or footage added via reshoots. Director Jeffrey Nachmanoff referred to it as "the only untouched episode."[1]
- This episode was Charlie Cox's least favorite in the season. Dismayed that it was the only episode that did not get reworked with reshoots, Cox pushed back as much as he could regarding its inclusion for the released season, adding that he felt the idea of a bank heist was "a 1970s game" and that the diamond plot line was not sophisticated enough.[2]
- The decision to include Yusuf Khan and the references to Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel came from executive producer Sana Amanat, who was an executive producer on Ms. Marvel.[1]
Behind the Scenes[]
- The episode was shot on location in the Financial District in New York City, at the same bank used in the movie Inside Man starring Denzel Washington. Filming occurred on a Sunday, as it was the only day that the crew could get the street outside of the bank closed.[1]
