James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes is a brainwashed super soldier known as Winter Soldier who serves the Soviet Union. In 1991, he was assigned on a mission to the United States with fellow Soviet super soldier Red Guardian.
Biography[]
Soviet Super Soldier[]

James Barnes was born in the United States, where he spent time in Coney Island growing up. During World War II, Barnes lost his left arm and was captured by Hydra, who gave him the Super Soldier Serum and a metal arm. HYDRA, as well as the Soviet Union, also brainwashed Barnes to become their lethal assassin known as Winter Soldier, sending him out for various high-profile missions.[2]
Failed Mission[]
Winter Soldier is blocked by Red Guardian

Winter Soldier was activated by Vasily Karpov and sent to Long Island where he was tasked with stealing a supply of Super Soldier Serum and assassinating Howard and Maria Stark. Winter Soldier caused the Starks to crash their car, allowing him to take the package, but when he went finish the mission, he was stopped by Red Guardian. Winter Soldier was determined to leave no witnesses and attacked Red Guardian. However, when they heard sirens, it forced them to flee. Winter Soldier reported his status, but was informed that his mission failure left him with no extraction.[2]

Winter Soldier and Red Guardian changed into civilian clothes and went to get food, where Winter Soldier had to activate his deep cover mode to charm Lucy to distract from Red Guardian nearly blowing their cover. Red Guardian decided that they should meet Rook in Las Vegas, thinking he could help them, so they stole a car.

They were stopped by S.H.I.E.L.D., who were hunting the two super soldiers. They were questioned by Goliath, who figured out who they really were, so Winter Soldier went to shoot him, only to be stopped by Red Guardian who drove them away. Now being chased by S.H.I.E.L.D., Winter Soldier opened fire upon them, but was again stopped by Red Guardian. Winter Soldier was told to drive as Red Guardian dealt with Foster, who transformed into Goliath. As they approached a cliff, the two decided to drive off it, knowing they would survive.[2]

Once they were clear of S.H.I.E.L.D., Winter Soldier and Red Guardian patched themselves up and talked about their pasts. Winter Soldier revealed that he did not know his name, so Red Guardian decided to help him and told him to think back to an early memory. Winter Soldier was able to recount Coney Island, which he thanked Red Guardian for helping him do.
Winter Soldier fights Rook before killing him
However, Winter Soldier was contacted by Dreykov, who ordered him to kill Red Guardian. Winter Soldier and Red Guardian headed to Las Vegas, and on the drive up, the two's bond grew stronger. They entered a hotel where they met Rook, however, he turned out not to be a Russian spy, as he only just traded information to have the Starks killed. When Rook shot at Red Guardian, Winter Soldier protected him and used his shield to knock Rook through the window, killing him.

Winter Soldier reflected over Rook's words about how the people they work for don't care about them and he acknowledged that Red Guardian was a good person. They were then surrounded by the Red Room Task Force, so Winter Soldier and Red Guardian jumped out of the building to escape. They were once again chased by Goliath, so by working together, Winter Soldier and Red Guardian were able to defeat him. As they ran through a casino, Winter Soldier shot the machines so money would spill out, causing a crowd to form, allowing them to escape.
Winter Soldier resists his brainwashing
Cornered by the Red Room Task Force cornered them, Winter Soldier explained that if he was captured, Vasily Karpov could reactivate him which would make him forget all that had happened. Winter Soldier was called by Kaprov, who told him he had failed his mission to kill Red Guardian. Winter Soldier gave Red Guardian the serum and told him to run, but Red Guardian decided to stay and fight with Winter Soldier. Karpov arrived and spoke Winter Soldier's trigger words, but he was able to resist. Winter Soldier and Red Guardian then jumped out of cover and fought together, but Winter Soldier was captured, while Red Guardian was able to escape.[2]

Winter Soldier is interrogated by Dreykov
Winter Soldier was brought back to Russia, where he was interrogated by Dreykov about the whereabouts of Red Guardian. Winter Soldier refused to give up his friend and told Dreykov that Red Guardian had been killed and died a Russian hero. Dreykov then had Winter Soldier's mind wiped.
