Multiverse Discovered
"He discovered that there were universes stacked on top of his own..."
The subject of this article comes from an alternate universe connecting to the main timeline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This universe is designated by the Marvel Cinematic Universe Wiki as "Celestial Invader Ego".

"There is no me."
―Winter Soldier to Howard Stark[src]

James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes is a World War II veteran, former officer of the United States Army and the best friend of Steve Rogers. During the war, Barnes was injected with the Super Soldier Serum, which helped him survive an incident that led others to presume him deceased, albeit with the loss of his left arm. Once found by the Soviet Union, he was brainwashed and armed with a new cybernetic arm in order to become their incredibly formidable assassin, known as Winter Soldier. Between all assassination missions, Winter Soldier would be put back into a cryogenic stasis to ensure his longevity. In 1988, Winter Soldier was ordered to aid S.H.I.E.L.D. in their conflict against the Celestial-human hybrid invader Peter Quill, as he posed a threat to the entire world. While working alongside the Avengers, he was given orders from his enthrallers to terminate the young Quill, though his old ally, Howard Stark, encouraged him not to do so, leading to him beginnning remembering his prior life and going AWOL.

Becoming Winter Soldier[]

"It looks just like him, Howard. Just like Bucky."
"I'd heard the rumors. But even if they're true, the man we knew is long gone, Peg."
Peggy Carter and Howard Stark[src]

During the World War II, Bucky Barnes served in the United States Army, alongisde his best friend and comrade, Steve Rogers, while working closely with Peggy Carter and Howard Stark. At one of the missions, Barnes disappeared and was considered killed in action. In reality, Barnes was amputated during the mission, captured, brainwashed and experimented on, which turned him into a super soldier, known as Winter Soldier. On the behalf of the Soviet Union, the Winter Soldier completed numerous missions, which earned him a reputation of the world's deadliest assassin.[2]

Winter Soldier arrives to the United States

"We need to kill him. He's a threat even without a seedling."
―Winter Soldier[src]

In 1988, in spite of the Cold War, Winter Soldier was dispatched to aid S.H.I.E.L.D. against Peter Quill, as Mikhail Gorbachev feared that his chaos might reach Moscow. Winter Soldier arrived at the Joint Dark Energy Mission Facility in Nevada, where he was identified as Barnes by Peggy Carter, much to her shock. He joined the rest of the team: Ant-Man, Black Panther, Goliath and Wendy Lawson, before they boarded Asis and departed to New York City.

Winter Soldier in 1988

Winter Soldier confronts Peter Quill

The team located Quill at Coney Island, and while Ant-Man, Goliath and Black Panther attempted to capture Quill, Lawson went on to analyze his ship. As Quill proved to be a formidable foe, Winter Soldier took control over Asis' weaponry and locked on him, however, Lawson warned him that if Quill hits the Tesseract, there would not be any Earth to save. Winter Soldier decided not to open fire and steered the aircraft to dodge Quill's energy blast, although it ended up hitting Lawson in the ship. The team eventually decided to retreat, while Winter Soldier covered them with a grenade launcher, although Quill deflected his shots.

Winter Soldier (1988)

Winter Soldier calls for Peter Quill's murder

Quill was able to hold Asis with his telekinesis, not allowing the team to retreat, but the sudden arrival of Thor allowed S.H.I.E.L.D. to capture Quill. He ended up escaping with Hope van Dyne's help, and Thor argued with the rest of the team on what should be done with Quill. Winter Soldier broke his silence and claimed that Quill must be killed, as even without a Celestial seedling he is still a threat to the world. T'Chaka and Foster were against Winter Soldier advocating for a murder of a child, however, Thor said that his logiс was sound, remarking that Earth would be in danger as long as Quill was alive. Winter Soldier listened as Van Dyne told them that Quill deserved help as much as anyone.[2]

Disobeying an Order[]

Winter Soldier 1988

Winter Soldier locks on Peter Quill

"You don't know me."
"Steve Rogers did. And the man he knew, the friend he loved, would never take that shot."
―Winter Soldier and Howard Stark[src]

Once Peter Quill was located in Missouri, Winter Soldier deserted and followed him on his own, tracking Quill down to the local graveyard. He locked on Quill with a sniper rifle and witnessed Hank Pym and Wendy Lawson approaching Quill, which he informed Vasily Karpov about. Karpov gave Winter Soldier an order to take Quill out, so he prepared to pull the trigger. Suddenly, Howard Stark intercepted their transmission and contacted Winter Soldier, asking him to stand down. Winter Soldier ignored Stark and kept Quill in his sights, while Pym was comforting Quill.

Bucky Barnes (What If)

Winter Soldier goes AWOL

Stark pleaded with Winter Soldier that Quill is not just a target, but a child with a future who can do a lot of good, something he also saw in Bucky Barnes. Winter Soldier replied that Stark does not know him, but Stark reminded him of Steve Rogers, saying that a man Rogers knew would never take that shot. Hearing those words, Winter Soldier hesitated to pull the trigger and eventually decided not to go with his order, allowing Pym and Lawson to take Quill. Subsequently, Winter Soldier went AWOL from the Soviet Union, as Stark's words resonated with the part of him that still represented the past Bucky Barnes.[2]
