"You have to learn to jump between two worlds."
―William Lopez to Maya Lopez[src]

William Lopez was a commander of the Tracksuit Mafia, the brother of Henry Lopez and the father of Maya Lopez. When Taloa Lopez died, William was disowned by his family and moved to New York. He was then murdered by Ronin acting on a tip from Kingpin.

Biography[]

Family Tragedy[]

Taloa and William Lopez

"I found out who cut the brakes. They’re taken care of."
"Oh, and you think that makes me feel better? That another family is now destroyed?"
"It makes me feel better."
―William Lopez and Chula Battiest[src]

William met and married a deaf Choctaw woman named Taloa Lopez and they had a daighter, Maya Lopez, who inherited the deaf gene. In 2007, William sat by the fire place at the Battiest Residence and talked with Taloa, Chula Battiest and Skully. Once inside, William talked with Taloa, jokingly asking her how long they thought Maya and Bonnie would stay outside in the rain. Right on cue, the girls ran inside as Maya asked for hot chocolate. They did not have any, so Taloa and Maya went out to get some.

William then got the news that the brake lines were cut and Taloa was killed in a car accident. William immediately tracked down the culprits and got them killed. In the hospital, William watched Maya through the window as she had to have her leg amputated. William was then approached by Skully and a grief-ridden Battiest. William let them know that he had killed the culprits, which just got Battiest angry as he had ruined another family. William simply said it made him feel better.

Battiest and William then got into an argument as Battiest said she had never trusted William and blamed him for Taloa's death. William said that Henry Lopez got him a job in New York City, so he would be leaving them soon. Battiest simply told him New York was not far enough away. As she walked away, Skully assured William that she was only grieving. William said that they all were.

William then walked into Maya's room. Maya gave him a drawing for Bonnie to let her know she was okay. Maya then claimed the crash was her fault and asked if Taloa was okay. William assured Maya that it was not her fault. Once Maya got healthy, William packed up everything and left Tamaha but not before giving Battiest a last look. When Battiest did not do anything, William knew it was time.[2]

Financial Troubles[]

"I thought I was going to school with kids like me?"
"It's impossible. See, you are one of a kind."
"But you said we could pay for the deaf school."
"I'm sorry. But in the end, it'll be better for you."

Being the father of Maya Lopez, William Lopez found himself in a tough financial position, to the point that he could not get his daughter to attend a Deaf school. In 2007, when Maya inquired about it, William had to break the news to his daughter that she would have to attend an ordinary school. Maya was rather upset, but William encouraged her that this will benefit her in the long run and that she will be to learn a lot simply by watching.[3]

Partnering with Wilson Fisk[]

In an attempt to fix the situation, William became a member of a small criminal gang, known as the Tracksuit Mafia. However, the Mafia was not strong enough to make any kind of profit, so William partnered himself with Wilson Fisk, who eventually became the leader of the organization. Under Fisk's leadership, the Tracksuit Mafia became a large crime syndicate with William as a commander of the organization. Fisk also got close with William's daughter, who would call him "uncle".[4]

Maya's Karate Lessons[]

"Hey, be good in class today. But remember, for your match, it's more about speed than size."
―William Lopez to Maya Lopez[src]

Lopez brought Maya Lopez to her class at the Brooklyn Karate Academy. Although he had to leave before her match, he advised her that she can use her speed to outmaneuver her larger opponent. Lopez left her with Wilson Fisk, who would take her home after class.[3]

Massacre of the Tracksuit Mafia[]

―William Lopez to Maya Lopez[src]

In 2018, Lopez survived the Snap. A few years later, the Tracksuit Mafia was one of Ronin's targets in his campaign to take out organized crime in New York City after gaining information from a tip by Kingpin.[4] Lopez was stabbed in his office by Ronin, who subsequently fled. This was witnessed by Maya, who came rushing in in an attempt to save her father. Lopez told Maya that it was too late for him, and pleaded with her to escape before it was too late.[3]

Legacy[]

Used as Manipulation by Kingpin[]

"Good, now I know how much it will hurt you when I kill the rest of your family. Just like I killed your father!"
Kingpin to Echo[src]

With William out of the picture, Kingpin took Maya Lopez under his wing, often comparing William's death to Bill Fisk's neglecting to tell Maya that Wilson actually killed Bill himself. Fisk also took this anger and manipulated Maya into using it to do awful things. Maya was also reachedoput to by people like Bonnie. However, she ignored this text.[2]

In December 2024, Maya Lopez had the Tracksuit Mafia chase down Kate Bishop, believing her to be the same Ronin who murdered her father. Lopez's quest for vengeance irrationalized her decisions as she decided to continue pursuing Bishop against Kazi Kazimierczak's warning that her vendetta was becoming increasingly more dangerous.[3] Maya later found out that Wilson Fisk was the one who orchestrated the murder of her father.[4] She then chose to avenge him by shooting Fisk herself.[5]

In 2025, Maya faced off with Kingpin once again. Kingpin came out about the real reason his father died and took the hammer he used. He then allowed Maya to take the hammer and kill Kingpin for what he had done. However, Maya refused.[6] Maya eventually was met by a vision of Taloa Lopez, who helped her heal many wounds of the past including William's death. While in a final confrontation with Kingpin, Fisk tried to use the fact that he killed William against Maya, but it failed to work.[7]

Personality[]

"Your father always put the crew first."
Kazi Kazimierczak to Maya Lopez[src]

William Lopez was a caring and gentle father. He felt remorse at the fact that he was not able to enroll his daughter in a Deaf school, but made sure that Maya was well prepared for life despite her disabilities.

Lopez was also a respected leader among the Tracksuit Mafia, placing the wellbeing of its members before anything else.
