"My goal was to recreate a very sophisticated Wakandan A.I. called Griot to enhance my suit's functionality."
"'Sophisticated.' Sounds like a Victorian-era ghost. That could be us, but you trippin'."
"But somehow, I'm looking at a hologram of my dead best friend instead."
Riri Williams and N.A.T.A.L.I.E.

Will the Real Natalie Please Stand Up? is the second episode of the first season of Ironheart.

Synopsis[]

Riri's new A.I. dredges up painful memories ahead of her first heist with Parker and his crew.

Plot[]

Riri Williams freaks out as she accidentally creates N.A.T.A.L.I.E. and scrambles to hide her away from Ronnie Williams. While N.A.T.A.L.I.E. acts casual, Williams considers her to be a mistake, as she was trying to recreate Griot, not replicate her dead best friend. She then gets reminded about an upcoming heist with Hood's Gang and wards Ronnie away, before ordering N.A.T.A.L.I.E. to stay put until she gets back. N.A.T.A.L.I.E. snarks back, but Williams has no time for that, so she sneaks out and bumps into Xavier Washington on her way out, who invites Williams to the party.

Williams arrives at Desperito's Pizzeria, where Parker Robbins and John King introduce her to the rest of the gang, before announcing that Williams will be replacing Stuart Clark as their tech specialist. King then tells the gang that their target will be the TNNL underground highway, during Sheila Zarate's practice run. The plan is for Williams to plug Slug's virus into TNNL systems to shut them down, while Robbins and King handle negotiations with Zarate. Williams works on calibrating the armor for the upcoming job, but she lacks necessary details, and tries to get in touch with Clark to get them, although he does not respond.

N.A.T.A.L.I.E. then reveals that she already complied a list of prominent black market dealers in Illinois and gives Williams a lead on Joe McGillicuddy. She gets excited after Williams finally acknowledges her and references a memory that only the real Natalie should have known, which briefly startles Williams. She then says that N.A.T.A.L.I.E. would not be going with her to McGillicuddy and locks her in the laptop, to N.A.T.A.L.I.E.'s frustration. Williams then borrows the wagon from Landon and hauls the armor to Evanston, where she finds McGillicuddy having a brief talk with his neighbor Heather about her dog on his lawn.

Williams approaches McGillicuddy and tells him about the tech she needs for her armor, but he claims that he does not know what she is talking about. Seeing that he refuses to cooperate, Williams presses McGillicuddy and threatens to call the FBI on him, unless he gives her what she wants. McGillicuddy reluctantly takes Williams to his bunker, during which she gets tests from N.A.T.A.L.I.E. and finds out that McGillicuddy is quite sensitive and prone to emotions. He admits to getting disregarded or blackmailed quite frequently, so Williams urges him to step up for himself and demand respect, while adding that he still needs to listen to her.

Being hardlocked to Williams' laptop, N.A.T.A.L.I.E. combs through her files, finding their her old photos with the real Natalie, before looking for a way out. She accidentally accesses the projector in the living room and manifests on a canvas that Ronnie is using. Witnessing N.A.TA.L.I.E., Ronnie gets scared, but N.A.T.A.L.I.E. explains that she is not a ghost, but an AI created by her daughter.

As the two sing along to Alanis Morissette, Williams and McGillicuddy arrive at the bunker, where Williams marvels at the amount of hardware he amassed. McGillicuddy tells her that it makes him feel closer to his father, who was an engineer and used to always say that technology is the future, an idea that McGillicuddy shares. Although Williams notices that he does not think of his father too fondly, to which McGillicuddy says that technology is meant to help people and bring advancement. He asks why did Williams build the armor, if not to help people, to which she replies that she did that because she could, which does not satisfy McGillicuddy.

Ronnie eventually adjusts to N.A.T.A.L.I.E. and talks to her, marveling at how realistic and lifelike Williams created her. N.A.T.A.L.I.E. says that despite that, Williams does not like her and refuses to give her a time of day, something that Ronnie is very familiar with as her mother. Knowing Williams' habit of pushing people away, Ronnie tells N.A.T.A.L.I.E. that the only way to be in her life is to force herself in.

Riri and Joe Tinker And Talk

While preparing the armor for the TNNL heist, Williams asks McGillicuddy what does he thinks about creating a sentient brainwave-based AI as a tech ethicist. He replies that while it would be rather efficient, he finds it ethically dubious. Williams then notices that McGillicuddy is too anxious to even touch his own hardware, afraid of leaving fingerprints, so Williams convinces him to push through and touch it. As the two talk some more, Williams get a text from Clown and puts the armor on to join the gang for the heist.

As the heist commences, King, Jeri and Roz Blood seize the control room, while Clown makes a hole into the underground highway, from which Ironheart gets in. As she flies through the highway, Ironheart gets startled by N.A.T.A.L.I.E. who accesses her armor. Because of that Ironheart loses the drive with Slug's virus, which puts the plan in danger, so N.A.T.A.L.I.E. comes up with a risky plan to take over the systems. N.A.T.A.L.I.E. suggests triggering the emergency override to briefly bring down the firewalls, although Ironheart could get crushed at a weight station, so she tells Slug and asks them to be ready.

Ironheart manages to pull through at the last moment and allows Slug to shut down the highway, so Hood materializes in front of Zarate to blackmail her. He forces Zarate to sign the documents that anonymously put him and his associates on TNNL's payroll, threatening her if she refuses. As Zarate signs the documents, the gang clocks out and Ironheart gets out of the highway, her and N.A.T.A.L.I.E. getting excited that the plan worked. They suddenly get cornered by a TNNL security guard and N.A.T.A.L.I.E. glitches out, so Ironheart cannot get access to the armor and close the armor's helmet. As the guard prepares to shoot, Hood saves Ironheart by neutralizing him non-lethally with his magic-infused bullet and the two retreat.

Back at the pizzeria, the gang celebrates their successful job, while Williams is still shaken after seeing a guard getting shot, although Clown assures her that he will be fine. Williams asks Clown what does she and the gang known about Robbins and his cloak, to which Clown recalls how she once saw strange scales on his back. King then approaches them with drinks and casually tells Williams to keep some of her questions to herself. Robbins then addresses the gang and congratulates them with the job well done, assuring them that the heists they pull bring them closer to true riches.

Outside, Williams talks to N.A.T.A.L.I.E. about her freezing up, to which she says that she recalled the moment Natalie and Gary Williams were shot in the past, and the stress made her shut down. She then warms Williams about Robbins, as N.A.T.A.L.I.E. detected some unusual energy signature on him that she could not properly analyze. Williams dismisses that, saying that their world is full of supernatural anyway, but N.A.T.A.L.I.E. is certain that Robbins is bad news. Williams insists that she still has work to do and if N.A.T.A.L.I.E. needs to focus if wants to stick around, and N.A.T.A.L.I.E. gets excited that Williams finally wants her by her side. Williams then remembers about the party and goes over there, spending some time with Washington and reminiscing over Natalie.

Robbins keeps hearing the whispers in his head as the cloak's influence spreads and corrupts his body, while King walks in on him. He says that he cannot keep covering for him, but Robbins insists that he is fine, as that was a price "he" made Robbins pay for that power. Robbins then asks to be left alone and although King if frustrated, he gives Robbins his privacy.

As Williams returns home, Ronnie lets her know that she knows about N.A.T.A.L.I.E. and comments on how real she feels, saying that it feels like the real Natalie is back with them. Ronnie asks if she could make an AI of Gary, but Williams says no, as she does not yet understand what N.A.T.A.L.I.E. is herself.

Back at his home, McGillicuddy throws out his "Live, Laugh, Love" plaques and notices that despite him asking, his neighbor keeps walking her dog on his lawn. Recalling Williams' words, he decides to stop taking disrespect lying down and retaliates by ruining his neighbor's garden.
