Biography

Early Life

Losing his Father

"Took a walk off a tall building. My family used to have a lot of dough, before..."
"The market crashed."
"Lost everything. After dad, my mom went a little crazy. Hasn't spoken a word in almost two years."
―Freddy Malick and Alphonso Mackenzie[src]

Wilfred Malick was born into a wealthy family. However, when the Stock Market Crash of '29 happened, he then witnessed his father jump out of a window, leading to his death.[2] When his father died, Malick not only lost the family money, but also the respect of people within HYDRA, including Viola, which profoundly impacted Malick. Malick had to live on the street, until he was found by Ernest Koenig, who gave him a job and a discounted rate to live at his bar.[1]

Family Redemption

Encountering S.H.I.E.L.D.

Malick welcoming the two new arrivals inside

In 1931, Alphonso Mackenzie and Phil Coulson visited Ernest Koenig's speakeasy, having time traveled from 2019. Coulson knew the password to enter the bar, so Malick let them in. He watched and closed the door as Tillman threatened the pair when they asked about Koenig, who revealed himself after Coulson and Mackenzie fought and defeated everybody in the bar.

While Koenig talked to Mackenzie and Coulson, Malick continued his work in the bar, stocking alcohol. Koenig mentioned Malick's past while proving that he was an upstanding citizen. Malick then dropped one of the bottles, prompting Koenig to yell at him.[1]

Targeted by the Chronicoms

Malick bartended a campaign party held by New York Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt, who had his party catered by Ernest Koenig. While working to prevent Chronicom Hunters from assassinating the Governor, who they believed to be the Chronicoms' target, Alphonso Mackenzie was starstruck while seeing Roosevelt speak. Malick asked why the Governor was a big deal, and Mackenzie talked about Roosevelt's actions as President. Shaw distracted Malick from the information about the future Mackenzie accidentally revealed, asking about how he started working for Koenig. The two bonded over their shared past, as both of them had lost their fathers at a young age.

Attack on Freddy Malick

Malick getting almost assassinated by Luke

He was later approached by the HYDRA agent Viola, who told her that she was his contact. The two found a private place, and briefly discussed Malick's father. Viola then handed Malick a vial, saying that it contained the future. Viola was then shot by Luke and Abel, disguised as police officers. Malick hid and asked why he was being targeted, with Luke only replying that he was the thread. Daisy Johnson saved Malick, and Mackenzie and Shaw brought him to safety. As they drove away, Mackenzie asked Malick where to go while Malick looked at the vial contemplatively.[1] He told the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents that they had to make a delivery, so they hid from the police.[2]

Protected by Allies

Alphonso Mackenzie and Deke Shaw then asked what they had to deliver. Malick showed the two of them alcohol, secretly hiding the vial, which contained a key ingredient to Super Soldier Serum serum, in one of the bottles. They drove to a train track where Malick was meant to get on a train to Hell's Harbor, and asked Shaw and Mackenzie to let him complete the delivery on his own. However, Mackenzie would not allow that, so they got on the train together.

Questioning his Protectors

Malick took a nap on the train, but was later woken up by Enoch trying to contact Alphonso Mackenzie. He found Mackenzie and Deke Shaw looking through the alcohol, and he asked them to stop. When Mackenzie refused, he pointed a gun at the two S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and made them stop. The train stopped and Shaw took Malick's gun as they arrived at Hell's Harbor.[2]

Ambush at Hell's Harbor

Malick, Alphonso Mackenzie, and Deke Shaw prepared to deliver the alcohol, while Mackenzie continued to investigate the bottles. Daisy Johnson contacted Shaw and told him that Malick would grow up to hurt thousands of people, asking him to shoot Malick in order to prevent this. Mackenzie discovered the vial in the alcohol, asking what it was. Shaw pointed his gun at Malick and ignored Mackenzie's orders to put the gun down. However, Malick convinced Shaw not to shoot him.

Shaw then noticed Luke and Abel behind Malick and shot at them, prompting a fight. Mackenzie and Shaw were eventually joined by Johnson, Enoch, Ernest Koenig, and a Life-Model Decoy of Phil Coulson. Malick took his gun back from Shaw and fled, frantically loading his gun. Koenig found Malick, who pointed his gun at him. Koenig tried to stop Malick from completing the delivery, but Malick non-fatally shot him and entered the HYDRA car that had arrived.[2]

HYDRA Leader

Infiltrating S.H.I.E.L.D.

"I guess, I owe you a debt of gratitude, Deke."
"I'm glad life worked out for you."
"Well, it looks like it has for you, too. You get to walk out of here instead of being carried out. Consider my debt paid. Although, if I see you again, you won't be so lucky."
―Wilfred Malick and Deke Shaw[src]

With the Super Soldier Serum ingredient provided, Malick had become a loyal and influential member of HYDRA, being noticed even by Werner Reinhardt.[3] As S.H.I.E.L.D. began to rise, Malick and his HYDRA cell infiltrated the organization, with Malick becoming the superior of Daniel Sousa. Malick received information that Sousa was tasked with delivering an important device for S.H.I.E.L.D. to Howard Stark, and also of Sousa's suspicions of S.H.I.E.L.D. having been infiltrated by HYDRA, so Malick ordered his subordinates eliminate Sousa to stop his investigation and seize the device.

As Malick sent Joe and one more operative to kidnap Niles Lindmore and extract the device from his house, he was informed by an anonymous tip that Sousa was on the train to Los Angeles. Malick then ordered Lana to lead a group of the HYDRA operatives and ambush Sousa there, however, they failed their mission. Joe then brought a man to Malick Mansion who they kidnapped from Lindmore Residence, however, he kept denying that he was a scientist and said that Malick's men made a mistake. Malick believed his story and shot one of his men for his mistake before preparing to kill the man as well.

The man, however, revealed that he was Deke Shaw and reminded Malick how S.H.I.E.L.D. saved him in 1931. Malick remembered Shaw from the past and how he was about to shoot him, however, Shaw replied that he was trying to save Malick from Chronicom Hunters. Malick put his gun down and spared Shaw as a sign of his gratitude, allowing him to walk away. However, Malick also warned Shaw that he will not show him any mercy if he sees him again.

Malick was informed that Sousa reached the Hotel Roosevelt with the device, so he ordered Joe to follow him. Once Joe called Malick and confirmed Sousa's location, Malick ordered him to assassinate Sousa and extract the device. Joe later reported that he successfully killed Sousa, however, the device was delivered to Stark regardless.[5]

Deal with Luke

"You and I share an enemy, Mr. Malick. The only difference is that mine is from the future."
"I think I might've met one of them."
"You certainly did. As it is certain S.H.I.E.L.D. will destroy all you have built. It is time to prevent that."
"How?"
"By doing exactly what I say."
Luke and Wilfred Malick[src]

Following the incident with Daniel Sousa, Malick was suddenly visited by Luke, the person who informed him about Sousa being on the train. Luke told Malick that they share a mutual enemy, S.H.I.E.L.D., with the only difference that Luke is against the future S.H.I.E.L.D., as Malick recalled his meeting with Deke Shaw. Luke also said that S.H.I.E.L.D. will destroy everything HYDRA has built in the future. Malick asked Luke what he can do to prevent it and Luke replied that he has to do exactly what he says to make it happen.[5]

Cheating on the Ceremony

"Dad... he would swap in this stone during the ceremonies and feel for the notch to make sure he never drew it from the bag."
Nathaniel Malick to Gideon Malick[src]

Malick proved himself to be a loyal and devoted HYDRA member, as his two sons, Gideon and Nathaniel who grew to resent their father for being more devoted to HYDRA than the two of them. Over time, Malick learned about Alveus, a powerful ancient being that was treated by HYDRA as the deity and banished on a faraway planet centuries ago. He was informed about a ceremony in which a "traveler" was chosen to visit the being.

However, Malick was not prepared to die, so he prepared a white rock with a notch in it so that, when it came to his turn to draw a rock to determine who would get sent, he would not choose the damning black rock. Malick's tactic worked every time, so he was able to avoid his demise, however, Werner Reinhardt learned about it and that the rock in a copy of Paradise Lost.[3]

Legacy

Deception Revealed

"Gideon, your father was a true believer. He'll be sorely missed."
"Don't worry, sir. Nathaniel and I will do everything we can to continue our father's work."
HYDRA Follower and Gideon Malick[src]

Following Malick's death in the 1970s, Gideon and Nathaniel visited Werner Reinhardt in prison, who revealed to them that their father had cheated several times. They didn't believe him at first, so Reinhardt told them to look in Wilfred's copy of Paradise Lost. Gideon learned the truth and copied his father's trick, causing Nathaniel to be sent to Maveth and killed by Alveus.[3]

Personality

"Dad was afraid to be the Traveler. He was a coward... and a cheater."
Nathaniel Malick to Gideon Malick[src]

Wilfred Malick was a very loyal man, staying true to HYDRA even as the organization turned their back on his father following the man's suicide. He remained faithful to his beliefs to a fault, eventually prioritizing his belief in Hive over his own sons.

Malick was also a very cowardly man. When Luke and Abel shot Viola, his first instinct was to hide in a corner. He started panicking and asking why he was being attacked, without thinking about Viola. Later in life, he cheated in an important ceremony in order to avoid being sent to Maveth.

He put up a front of awkwardness but was in fact a very confident and manipulative man. Once he knew he could trust Alphonso Mackenzie and Deke Shaw, he began manipulating the two of them by lying about the contents of his shipment. He confidently led them along and fought Mackenzie about his involvement in the shipment. He held Mackenzie and Shaw at gunpoint without question and got annoyed whenever he was questioned.
