"Call off your pilots. I'll explain later."
Iron Man to James Rhodes[src]

Whiplash #1 and his partner Scott Campbell were sent by the United States Air Force to attack a flying object in the sky. The object hacked into Air Force frequencies and revealed itself to be Tony Stark as he avoided the planes. In avoiding Stark, Whiplash #1's plane spun out of control, forcing the pilot to eject. However, the pilot's parachute did not work, sending him into a free fall. Stark flew to the pilot and activated his parachute, allowing him to fall to safety.[2]
