What If...? is an animated American web television series based on the Marvel Comics series of the same name. It is the sixteenth television series and the first animated series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The first two seasons are produced by Marvel Studios while the third and final season is produced by Marvel Animation. It was released on Disney+.
The first season is the fifth installment of Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It premiered on August 11, 2021 and concluded on October 6, 2021.
The second season is the seventh installment of Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It premiered on December 22, 2023 and concluded on December 30, 2023.
The third and final season[2][3] is the eleventh installment of Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It will premiere on December 22, 2024 and conclude on December 29, 2024.[4]
Synopsis[]
Season One[]
What if instead of Steve Rogers, Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) actually became the first Super Soldier? That creative brainstorming exercise is the heart of What If...?, the Marvel Cinematic Universe's first animated series. The anthology reimagines numerous major events from the movies in game-changing ways, and also features Chadwick Boseman, who was able to reprise T'Challa via voice work before his death.[5]
Season Two[]
Season 2 of What If...? continues the journey as The Watcher guides viewers through the vast Multiverse, introducing brand new and familiar faces throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series questions, revisits and twists classic Marvel Cinematic moments with an incredible voice cast that includes a host of stars who reprise their iconic roles.[6]
Season Three[]
Marvel's animated series What If...? returns in Season 3 for its culminating adventure through the multiverse. Watch as classic characters make unexpected choices that will mutate their worlds into spectacular alternate versions of the MCU. The Watcher will guide viewers as the series traverses new genres, bigger spectacles, and incredible new characters.[7]

On March 12, 2019, /Film reported that Marvel Studios was developing an animated television series based on the What If comic book series for Disney+ with Kevin Feige set to serve as an executive producer.[9]
On April 11, 2019, during Disney’s 2019 Investor Day, it was announced that the series would premiere during the first year of Disney+.[10] Kevin Feige also announced that each episode would explore a key moment from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and that first episode would explore what if Peggy Carter was given the Super Soldier Serum instead of Steve Rogers.[11]
On July 20, 2019, at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, Kevin Feige revealed most of the cast and announced that the series was scheduled to debut on Disney+ in the Summer of 2021. It was also announced that Jeffrey Wright would voice The Watcher in the series.[12]
On December 18, 2019, Kevin Feige revealed that the series' first season would consist of ten episodes. Feige also revealed that a second season of the series, which would also consist of ten episodes, was already in pre-production.[13]
On October 28, 2020, Variety reported that Laura Karpman would be composing the score for the series.[14]
On May 14, 2021, Entertainment Weekly reported that the series would premiere in August.[5]
On July 8, 2021, it was announced that the series would premiere on August 11, 2021.[15]
On August 2, 2021, in an interview with Collider, Brad Winderbaum revealed that first and second season of the series would consist of nine episodes each.[16] That same day, Winderbaum also revealed that Captain Carter would appear in every season of the series.[17]
On August 20, 2021, Kevin Feige revealed that the second season of the series would incorporate events based on the Phase Four films.[18]
On October 6, 2021, in an interview with Variety, Bryan Andrews revealed that there were plans for a T'Challa/Star-Lord spin-off series before Chadwick Boseman passed away.[19]
On March 12, 2022, it was reported that the second season of the series was expected to premiere in 2022.[20]
On July 22, 2022, at San Diego Comic-Con 2022, it was announced that the second season of the series would premiere in early 2023.[21] It was also announced that a third season of the series was in development.[2] That same day, A.C. Bradley revealed that the second season of the series would be her final project with Marvel Studios.[22]
On December 26, 2022, in an interview with Collider, Laura Karpman revealed that she had returned to compose the score for the second season of the series. It was also revealed that Nora Kroll-Rosenbaum had co-composed the score for the second season of the series.[23]
On September 1, 2023, The Hollywood Reporter reported that the second season of the series would premiere around December 25.[24]
On November 15, 2023, it was announced that the second season of the series would premiere on December 22.[6]
On December 30, 2023, A.C. Bradley revealed that the final episode written by her, centered around Red Guardian and Winter Soldier, would be a part of the third season of the series.[25] The next day, in an interview with IGN, Bradley revealed that Matthew Chauncey was the head writer of the third season of the series.[1]
On August 10, 2024, at D23, it was the announced that the third season of the series would be the final season.[3]
On October 30, 2024, it was announced that the third season of the series would premiere on December 22 with a new episode being released daily.[4]
