The War Machine Armor: Mark V, also known as the Cosmic Iron Patriot Armor,[1] was the fifth armor given to James Rhodes, kept in storage while he used the Mark VI. When the Mark VI was destroyed, Rhodes used the Mark V to participate in the Battle of Earth.

History[]

Battle of Earth[]

The Mark V War Machine armor was larger and bulkier than its predecessors, and also had a more unique color scheme, using more blue and red tones reminiscent of the Iron Patriot armor. The Mark V armor was constructed in between 2016 and 2023, upgraded with alien technology,[2] and stored at the Avengers Compound. During the Attack on the Avengers Compound, James Rhodes was trapped underground with the damaged Mark VI armor. Ant-Man found the Mark V armor and gave it to Rhodes, which Rhodes used during the Battle of Earth.[3]

Capabilities[]

The armor has been upgraded with alien technology.[2]

  • Superhuman Strength: The armor amplifies the pilot's strength to superhuman levels.
  • Superhuman Durability: The War Machine Armor Mark V gives its user enhanced durability.
  • Superhuman Speed: The armor allows Rhodes to move much faster than the average human.
  • Superhuman Stamina: As the armor assists the user with their movement, the War Machine Mark V allows them to have greater stamina than they would have without it.
  • Superhuman Reflexes: Thanks to the HUD inside the armor, the suit, and by extension James Rhodes, can react to potential threats much quicker than usual.
  • Flight:

Standard since the Iron Man Armor: Mark II, the Mark V War Machine armor possesses advanced flight capabilities.
  • Heads Up Display (HUD): The armor contains a Heads Up Display in the head, allowing Rhodes to control the suits functions and access the battlefield for threats.
  • Self-Contained Life-Support System and Environmental Protection: The armor has its own life support systems and protection against any environment, meaning Rhodes can survive harsh environments such as the vacuum of space and underwater.
  • Collapsible Plating: The War Machine Armor Mark V has collapsible plating, which lets Rhodes retract the helmet.
  • Built-In Walking Aid: The War Machine Armor Mark V allows for the semi-paralyzed James Rhodes to walk.
  • Repulsors: The Armor has repulsors in the palms as is standard with all suits.
  • Bomb Dispensers: Similar to the Mark IV, the armor contains dual collapsible miniature bomb.
  • Dual double barreled back cannons: The armor contains two red double barreled, possibly drum fed, cannons stored on its back, an upgrade from the standard singular machine gun.
  • Forearm Guns: The armor contains a smaller version of the back cannon on either forearm, as well as the standard Mk III and Mk IV forearm gun on the opposing side.
  • Missile Launchers: Similar to the Mark IV, the armor contains missile dispenser stored on the shoulders and back on either side, and also contains four-five miniature missiles on the anterior and posterior forearms.
  • Thigh Bomb Dispensers: The armor contains micro bombs similar to the Iron Man Armor: Mark VII explosives stored on each thigh.

Behind the Scenes[]

War Machine Armor - Mark V

Original Mark V design

  • The Mark V was originally planned to appear in Avengers: Infinity War, with a design similar to the Mark IV armor and the overall War Machine series of armors. For Avengers: Endgame, the design for an upgraded Iron Patriot Armor ended up becoming the Mark V while the War Machine armor seen in the movie was designed as the Mark VI.
