Walt Disney Studios is a film studio and a division of Disney Entertainment in Burbank, California that owns the film rights to and distributes almost all the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. It is the parent company of Marvel Studios.
History[]
On December 31, 2009, Disney purchased Marvel Entertainment and gained the distribution rights to The Avengers and Iron Man 3 from Paramount Pictures.[1][2]
In August 2011, Disney fired Marvel Studios' marketing department and took over marketing and distribution of future titles, beginning with The Avengers.[3][4]
On December 21, 2012, Walt Disney Studios agreed to have Netflix as its exclusive U.S. television subscription service for Marvel Studios feature films starting in 2016, replacing its previous agreement with Starz.[5]
In April 2013, Marvel Studios moved its executive production offices to Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California.[6]
On July 2, 2013, they purchased the distribution rights to Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger to close the acquisition of Marvel Entertainment.[7]
In August 2015, Marvel Studios was placed into Walt Disney Studios as a subsidiary, with Kevin Feige reporting directly to Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan F. Horn instead of Marvel Entertainment CEO Ike Perlmutter. Perlmutter was left in charge of Marvel Television until it was folded into Marvel Studios in 2019.[8][9]
