In the aftermath of the Hydra Uprising, Vasily Karpov hid in Cleveland, living in the house where he also had the Winter Soldier Book hidden. One day, Karpov was tracked down by Helmut Zemo who tricked Karpov into letting him into his house, before knocking Karpov out. Zemo tied unconscious Karpov to a sink upside down, while looking through Hydra files that Karpov had at his house. When Karpov woke up, Zemo started to fill up the sink with water and demanded information about the Hydra mission report from December 16, 1991, however, Karpov refused to give Zemo what he wanted. As Karpov was not useful to his cause, Zemo took the book and left Karpov to drown, being unable to lift his head.[1]
