"I know who I am when you're not here. It's when you come back that I start to wonder... Did you fall in love with me? Or the face that puts you at ease?"
―Varra to Nick Fury[src]

Varra is a Skrull refugee on Earth, and one of Talos' agents that provided Nick Fury with intel to counter threats for S.H.I.E.L.D. While living on Earth, she met and befriended the terminally-ill Priscilla Davis, and with her consent assumed her identity after her death, falling in love and marrying Fury. During the Secret Invasion, Varra sided with Gravik and the Skrull Resistance. However, she defected when she found herself unable to eliminate Fury. Surviving the Resistance's attack on her, Varra took a brief trip with Fury briefly to the S.A.B.E.R. Space Station in hopes of establishing peace between Skrulls and Kree.

Biography[]

Living on Earth[]

Introducing Gravik[]

"Varra. Welcome."
"Thank you, Fury. I'd like you to meet someone. This is Gravik."
"Gravik?"
"His parents were killed in the last stand against the Kree. He escaped from behind enemy lines, piloted a ship all on his own. He is smart, Fury. Knows how to survive. We could use someone like him."

Varra tells Nick Fury about Gravik's past

Varra went to live on Earth with the remained of the Skrull refugees of the Kree-Skrull War. She met a young Skrull named Gravik and brought him to the meeting, learning that his parents were killed during the war. She introduced Gravik to Nick Fury and privately explained to that he escaped from behind enemy lines flying a ship himself and suggested that he would be useful.

Gravik & Varra

Varra comforts Gravik

Fury commented that he was simply a child, but Varra explained that only a human would see him that way and that Fury should talk to Gravik. She then joined the crowd, allowing Fury a moment alone with Gravik. During the meeting, Varra comforted Gravik as Talos talked about the losses all the Skrulls had shared.[3]

Becoming Priscilla Davis[]

"Doctor Priscilla Davis had a congenital heart defect. She was keeping it a secret. Didn't want the people she loved gathered around for months, watching her die in a hospital. And I would visit her in her room almost every day towards the end, and we became quite close. But at some point, I had to acknowledge the truth of what I was actually doing there in the first place."
"Which was?"
"Looking for someone who would slip your defenses."
―Varra and Nick Fury[src]

Searching for a face to put Nick Fury's mind at ease, Varra met Priscilla Davis, a scientist with a congenital heart defect that she was keep secret. The two became close, and Varra repeatedly visited Davis in her hospital room. One day, Varra revealed to Davis that she was a Skrull and offered Davis the ability to fall in love, telling her about Fury. Davis agreed under the conditions that Varra bury Davis at sea, continue to be a daughter to Davis' parents, and never hurt Fury. Once Davis died, Varra took on her form and fulfilled her promises.[2]

Propositioning Nick Fury[]

"There's a rule that, you know, commander of station and operatives cannot be–"
"Our unit doesn't exist, Fury. That means I don't work for you."
Nick Fury and Varra[src]

Varra worked with Nick Fury to gather information on Dreykov. She received information which would help fight him. In 1998, Varra met with Fury at the 93rd Diner in New York City[1] in the form of Priscilla Davis[2] and read A New Path to the Waterfall by Raymond Carver while she waited. Varra greeted Fury as he arrived and asked if he was looking for someone.

Varra suggests she and Nick Fury can date

Fury, not realizing that he was talking to Varra, simply said that he was. Varra invited him to sit with her, prompting Fury to realize who she was. Fury commented on Varra's new appearance and asked what human she was impersonating, so Varra commented that it depended on the outcome of the night. Fury cut her off, reminding her that commanders cannot date the people working under them, but Varra suggested that the rule did not apply to them since Varra and the Skrulls were not officially on record, interesting Fury.[1] While disguised as Davis, Varra researched superhuman genes and was published for her findings.[2]

Finding a Home[]

"He'd sit there by the window, reading a book. Letting the sun kiss his skin. And I'd get lost, just watching him like that for hours."
―Varra to G'iah[src]

In 2011, Varra went to a viewing for a house in England, thinking about one that would please herself and Nick Fury. She loved the house, noting that it had privacy, security, and light, all of which he valued. Varra decided to get it for the two of them despite her uncertainty that Fury would settle and call a place with her home. Fury and Varra lived in the house together, and Varra often enjoyed watching Fury read by the window.[4]

Married Life[]

"As I was watching all the news coverage of those guys' heroics over in the States, strangest thing, I kept having this feeling that someone I know had something to do with getting them all together."
"And what if it was someone you know?"
"Wouldn't surprise me."
―Varra and Nick Fury[src]

In 2012, Varra saw on the news that the Avengers had defeated the Chitauri and guessed that Nick Fury was responsible for bringing the team together. Fury met with Varra in Paris at a restaurant and sat with her. Varra shared her suspicion, but Fury simply asked what it would mean, so Varra explained that it would not have surprised her due to Fury's sense of righteousness and justice. Fury asked about Varra's book, so she said it was a collection of poems by Raymond Carver, explaining that Carver was known for his brevity. Fury asked about her favorite poem, which Varra said was called "Late Fragment." Fury asked how it went, so Varra explained that the poem was a dialogue and had Fury read part of it. In the poem, the character Varra read for claimed that she got what she wanted out of life, which was to feel beloved.[2] Varra and Fury continued to spend time together and married, going on a honeymoon in Finland due to her love of the cold.[4] Fury kept his marriage to Varra a secret, even from Steve Rogers.[5]

Skrull Resistance[]

Snap and Blip[]

"I became a widow in your absence. I wept on your pillow every night. I grieved for you. And just when I thought I had gotten past the heartbreak, you came back in the Blip. I thought we were going to undo all the pain together. Go back to the way we were, but no, you just up and vanished again. Only this time it was voluntary. So if you're interested in who I became in your second absence, I became me. The me I was before you."
―Varra to Nick Fury[src]

In 2018, Varra learned that her husband was investigating some aliens and playfully warned him that if he kept at it, he might lose the alien he married.[4] Shortly after, Fury became a victim of Thanos' Snap, resulting in his death, although Varra survived. Varra then cried on his pillow nightly, mourning the loss of her husband. Over the years, she worked to move on from the heartbreak. In 2023, Fury was resurrected in the Blip, five years after he had died. As Fury returned home to her, Varra was hopeful that she and Fury would be able to work through her pain together and return to their old life. However, Fury soon chose to leave Varra and Earth in general to work on the S.A.B.E.R. space station. In response, Varra started to work on improving herself alone and felt her personality from prior to meeting Fury restored. Gravik started to resent Fury and the rest of humanity, so he started a resistance dedicated to making Earth the Skrull home world, which Varra joined.[1]

Reuniting with her Husband[]

Fury's Wife

Varra reunites with Nick Fury

"Darling, you are Nick Fury. I never harbored any illusions about the necessity of you going away. But staying away, that leaves a mark."
―Varra to Nick Fury[src]

As Varra was cooking, Nick Fury returned home, causing Varra to retake the form of Priscilla Davis. Varra noted that he forgot his wedding ring, so Fury went to put it on. The two then kissed happily and hugged as they reunited.[3] The next morning, Varra found Fury cooking breakfast and listening to the reporter Chris Stearns talking about the rising political tensions. Varra turned the television off and commented on Fury's ability to listen. Varra made fun of Fury's cooking before asking what happened to bring Fury back to Earth after so long. Fury offered to apologize for leaving, but Varra explained that the pain came from him staying in space rather than leaving. Fury claimed to have retired and thought about getting revenge.

Nick Fury asks Varra about Gravik

Fury asked if Varra had been talking to Gravik, so Varra asked why he was asking. Fury said that he needed to be sure of who Varra had become in his absence. Varra scolded Fury, saying that she was a widow when Fury died in the Snap, and scolding him for leaving for space soon after his resurrection. She said that she had become herself during Fury's second absence, but was interrupted by a phone call. Fury told her not to ignore it, so she answered and told the caller that she did not have the information they needed before hanging up. Fury asked if the call was important, which Varra denied before walking away.[1]

Meeting with Raava[]

Varra receives her gun

"He's broken. He's been broken ever since he came back from the Blip. The old Fury, the one with power, the one with ability, the one who was indispensable to us, that Fury's gone. Now this new one, he'll be dead from exhaustion and defeat soon enough. We don't need to kill him."
―Varra to Raava[src]

Varra received a message from Raava, prompting her to leave her house and take a train to a bank, where she retrieved a gun from a safe deposit box. Raava called her, telling her to meet at St James's Church in an hour. Varra asked to talk to Gravik, but Raava insisted that she would talk to her.[1]

Varra went to the church as Raava arrived, and Varra said that Nick Fury was fired. Raava revealed that she was the one who fired him, prompting Varra to ask why Gravik needed her. However, Raava explained that she did not need to concern herself with Gravik's needs and to focus on Raava telling her to kill Fury. Raava threatened to kill Varra if she did not comply and got up to leave, but Varra stopped her, trying to explain that Fury was not a threat to the Skrull Resistance. However, Raava reiterated her threat before leaving.[2]

Marital Issues[]

Varra asks about Nick Fury's wedding ring

"They'll be coming for you."
"I'm a big girl. I can take care of myself. Would you have loved me if I'd never changed? If I'd been my true self?"
"Guess we'll never know."
Nick Fury and Varra[src]

As Varra got home, she found that Nick Fury's wedding ring was in its bowl, but that he was in the kitchen making tea. Varra asked about the ring, so Fury claimed to have forgotten while entering the house through the back. Varra asked whether he was there to stay, but Fury said he would be leaving for work soon. Fury brought the tea for Varra and sat down, acknowledging that he made a mistake in losing reason to be Varra's husband. He revealed that he knew about Varra's plan to kill him, but said that he was unsure of whether he would do anything differently given the chance.

Varra asked Fury about the person whose form she had taken, so Varra told him about her experiences knowing Priscilla Davis. Fury and Varra quoted Varra's favorite poem, and once they finished, the shot the wall behind each other rather than killing the other. Fury commented on what the incident represents about the status of their marriage and warned that the Skrull Resistance would be after her. Varra assured Fury that she could take care of herself and asked whether Fury would have loved her in her true form. Fury left, saying that they would never know.[2]

Cremating Talos[]

Varra helps G'iah mourn her father

"I told him he was a failure. What kind of daughter says that to her father?"
"The kind that intends to make it up to him the next time she sees him. The last thing I said to Fury before the Snap was, 'If you keep spending all your time chasing aliens, you might lose the one you married.'"
G'iah and Varra[src]

Varra chose to stay in her home while the Skrulls planned to greet her. A Skrull entered her home, so Varra prepared her weapon and pointed it at her. However, the Skrull introduced herself as G'iah and asked for help burying her father, Talos. The pair prepared a pyre for Talos to be cremated while G'iah expressed sadness that he was only being mourned by two people since he was a General. Varra comforted G'iah, saying that Talos did not appreciate pageantry. Varra asked if G'iah had brought an offering and lit a torch while G'iah put Soren's ring on Talos' body. G'iah did not know the proper prayer, so Varra said it while G'iah started the cremation.[4]

Attacked by Skrulls[]

Varra & G'iah

Varra gets upset at G'iah's comment

"Anyway, when it comes to facing down my executioners, I'd rather meet the bastards standing right here in my happiness than to meet them running down some dark alley."
―Varra to G'iah[src]

Varra and G'iah returned inside, where G'iah expressed regret at insulting Talos. Varra comforted G'iah, saying that before Nick Fury's death in the Snap, she warned him that spending time chasing aliens would result in him losing their marriage. G'iah asked why Gravik wanted her dead, so Varra explained that she had defied his orders. G'iah questioned her for waiting to be killed, so Varra explained her love for the house and reminisced about watching Fury read. G'iah asked if Fury had the same appreciation for Varra in her true form, upsetting Varra. G'iah tried to apologize, but Varra kept talking about G'iah's lack of knowledge on what it took to build a life with someone. She took a moment to collect herself and explained that she would rather meet her executioners in the place that brought her happiness.

Varra defends her home

Suddenly, Skrulls attacked, so G'iah and Varra rushed to defend themselves. They put on Bulletproof Vests and armed themselves, allowing them to fight back and shoot Skrulls as they came. The two killed the Skrulls they saw and circled each other, when a Skrull attacked and pushed Varra to the ground. Varra backed away as a Skrull approached her, but G'iah intercepted and shot him in the chest. G'iah hit the Skrull's head in the desk, allowing Varra to shoot him in the head.

Varra then drove G'iah away from the house and upon arriving at their destination, held her hand and warned G'iah to be careful. G'iah then left the car and the two parted ways.[4] Varra returned home and received a phone call from Nick Fury, which she answer. She mentioned that Fury had not called her cell phone in a long time, but Fury responded that while he had typed the number many times, he had never pressed send. Varra indicated that she knew Fury was far away and asked if he was returning any time soon, but Fury merely apologized and said he had to hang up. Varra responded that he did not have to do so before Fury bid her farewell and ended the call.[6]

Partnering with Fury[]

Varra (Home)

Varra tells Nick Fury about her struggle with her identity

"I'll help you get started. But then I've gotta get back. All my work is here, darling. And it's never been more important."
―Varra to Nick Fury[src]

Varra worked on cleaning up the house from the attack when Nick Fury got home and apologized for not being present as a husband. Varra insisted that she could take care of herself, but Fury said that she should not have to. Varra told Fury that while she was confident in who she was when he was not around, his presence caused her to wonder whether Fury fell in love with her or the body she impersonated. Fury told Varra that he loved her and asked for another chance, revealing that he would be leaving that night. Varra said that they would be saying goodbye, so Fury left, saying that she would know where to find him if she could forgive him.

Varra the Skrull

Varra tells Nick Fury that she loves him

That night, Varra decided to drive to where S.A.B.E.R. was meant to retrieve Fury and commented to him on the peaceful nature of the area. Fury addressed Varra as "Priscilla," but Varra corrected him to "Varra," saying that she wanted to use her birth name now that their secret was out. Fury told Varra that the Kree were open to peace talks with Skrulls, surprising her, who believed it to be bad luck. Fury insisted that it was a good thing and asked for Varra's help with the peace summit, commenting on her skills in diplomacy. Fury insisted that she was better at people and that he was tired of handling things his own way, insisting that they were better together and asking her to go with him. As the ship landed to take them, Varra agreed to help him start, saying that she had to return to her work on Earth after. Varra took her true form and told Fury that she loved him, and Fury replied that he loved her as she was. The two kissed and then boarded the ship, leaving to work on the peace treaty together.[6]

Personality[]

"Because if he's the man I think he is, he has a powerful sense of righteousness. He understands that the universe is a dangerous place. That home is worth fighting for. And that the weak are worth protecting."
―Varra to Nick Fury[src]

Varra had a strong sense of identity as a soldier in the 1990s and understood the Skrulls' ways of war. Due to this, she fiercely defended the people and places she cared about and maintained the traditions of the Skrulls even during their time on Earth. Thirty years following her people fleeing to Earth, she remembered the proper prayer for Talos' funeral and was able to say it on G'iah's behalf. She deeply cared for own people, and was willing to side with Gravik to defend them and get a home for them. Despite fighting against Talos, Varra was willing to help G'iah give him a proper burial and offered her comfort in her loss. She served as a diplomat for her people and worked to gain peace, becoming one of the Skrulls' best diplomats.

Varra deeply cared about Nick Fury, and was willing to betray Gravik in order to protect him. Throughout the thirty years of the pair knowing each other, Varra regularly met with him and chose a face that would put his mind at ease so that they could be together. While choosing a house, she made sure it fit what he wanted and felt like a home for herself. Although she understood Fury's need to be away from home for extended periods of time, Varra was deeply saddened by these absences, particularly his disappearance to work on the S.A.B.E.R. space station. However, the two were able to work through their differences.
