Introduction[]
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is going through a phase of exponential growing. As the universe grows, a lot of projects not only introduce new elements, sometimes they also go back to change the story of the MCU which was established by old productions, creating retcons in continuity, or they are simply mistakes that contradict the previous continuity of the MCU.
So far, some have been added/listed here.
What kind of retcons go in the Continuity Section?[]
Retcon is a shortened version of the term "retroactive continuity". It is a new piece of information that gives new context to previously established info, changing it, sometimes giving a new interpretation on old events. The goal of this section is only to cover "retcons" that contradict what previous installments of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have established, it will not be applied to aspects that can be seen as simply "expanding the lore". It will also address where those changes have happened, and how the new changes fit the canon of the MCU since there is a clear change in continuity moving forward
The aforementioned section will server its purpose of clarifying the things that do not line up due to MCU's contradictory info. The section will go under "Behind the Scenes" section of our articles as it will be written in an out-of-universe perspective.
Type of Retcons[]
Mistakes whether they carry weight in continuity or not[]
- What If...? divergence moments
- The Wakanda Files: A Technological Exploration of the Avengers and Beyond featuring a log created by J.A.R.V.I.S. after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Disregard of additional content's info[]
- Information known from The Art of Guardians of the Galaxy being retconned by the events of Avengers: Infinity War (such as Death's story)
- Black Widow establishing the Escape from the Raft takes place weeks after the airport battle when previous content established it happened a couple of days later.
- The Art of Ant-Man and the Wasp says Janet used the pieces of the Yellowjacket suit to make her own, teasing that Darren was dead, but this was slightly changed by Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania since Cross came back as M.O.D.O.K.
Info updated/changed[]
- Lylla in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and her being listed in the Nova Corps datasheet as an ally to Rocket.
- Heavy retcons to the Mandarin's mythos in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
- Confirmation that Clint Barton's Homestead is located in Iowa, when AoU material previously hinted at a Missouri location.
- The Staff of One from Runaways. Revealed off-screen, during Season 1, to be an artifact of technology, made in Wizards Lab, and then we find out the show just ignored that and it is now a magic devise that existed during Tina's young years, before her time at Wizards.
- Wanda Maximoff's nature as a witch being the reason of how she survived Strucker's experiments would also be added in continuity, as there was not hint of that until Marvel Studios Visual Dictionary.
Vistual Retcons[]
- Thanos's redesign in The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
- Hulk's redesign.
- After the recast of a character, when the new actor's likeliness is used for the character's appearance set in the timeline "before" the recast happened.
Exceptions to "Retcons"[]
- Isaiah Bradley and Winter Soldiers' existence. He was a subject to the Super Soldier Serum when it was previously established that only Steve Rogers was.
