- "The bow and arrow once was the pinnacle of weapons technology. It allowed the great Genghis Khan to rule from the Pacific to the Ukraine."
- ―Raza Hamidmi al-Wazar[src]
Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe. Formerly known as the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, it was part of the Soviet Union from its inception in 1922 until its dissolution in December 1991.
History[]
Viking Raids[]
During the late 8th to late 11th centuries, the Vikings raided and traded from their Scandinavian homelands across wide areas of northern and central Europe, as well as European Russia. One of these raid routes took them near Kiev, Ukraine. In the 21st century, this particular route was considered by Skye as one of the possible locations for the Berserker Staff, as Elliot Randolph suggested searching Viking routes for its possible location.[1]
Genghis Khan[]
In the 13th century, Genghis Khan was able to rule one of the greatest empires of history, from the Pacific to Ukraine, thanks to the use of the bow an arrow. At the beginning of the 21st century, Raza Hamidmi al-Wazar, a member of the Ten Rings, referenced this fact telling Tony Stark that the weapons from Stark Industries have become the key to ruling lands.[2]
World War II[]
In 1943, the Wehrmacht and the Soviet Armed Forces fought for control of the Ukrainian city of Zhitomir. Newspapers around the world published the news that the Nazis were able to take the city.[3]
Kidnapping of Nikola[]
Leviathan obtained the blueprints for a Photonic Amplifier designed by Howard Stark, but as its construction was difficult, they needed a qualified engineer to built it. Leviathan kidnapped a gifted engineer named Nikola in Kiev, taking his family as leverage and imprisoning him at the Red Room Academy to force him to construct the weapon.[4]
Chernobyl Disaster[]
In 1986, the Hand caused the destruction of the city of Chernobyl in order to extract dragon bones from under the city. Later, the city's destruction was covered up as a nuclear disaster.[5]
Natasha Romanoff's Mission[]
In 2009, Natasha Romanoff was tasked with escorting a nuclear engineer out of Iran. Upon reaching the city of Odesa in Ukraine, they were attacked by Winter Soldier, who made them lose control of their vehicle and fall off a cliff.
Romanoff managed to pulled the engineer and herself out, but the Winter Soldier, who was waiting for them, shot through Romanoff's stomach and killed the engineer.
Five years later, Romanoff reached some of her contacts in Kyiv in order to obtain a file regarding Winter Soldier, that included a photograph of Bucky Barnes inside a Cryostasis Chamber, and notes about his transformation into Winter Soldier. Romanoff would later hand the file to Steve Rogers, warning him to be careful about what he would learn investigating Winter Soldier.[6]
Euromaidan[]
In 2014, Ukraine was rocked by political and civil unrest, instigating a crisis known as Euromaidan. It is known that a member of the Black Widows was involved in or possibly orchestrated the crisis.[7]
Ultimo[]
HYDRA later sent a giant robot named Ultimo, made of Ultron parts, to attack a small village in Ukraine. The Avengers retaliated, at first making mistakes. However, Sam Wilson found the base where Ultimo was being controlled, and brought Natasha Romanoff to take the soldiers down. Meanwhile, Captain America, Vision, James Rhodes, and Wanda Maximoff worked together to destroy the robot, satisfied with their new team.[8]
Burisma Controversy[]
Following the Massacre of Phi Gamma Epsilon, The Oregon Examiner reported that a career State Department official told congressional investigators that he raised concerns in 2015 about the son of Delaware senator Joe Biden being on the board of a Ukrainian natural-gas firm, Burisma Holdings.[9]
Alternate Universes[]
Death of Hope van Dyne[]
- "Agent Hope van Dyne was killed on a mission outside Odesa, Ukraine."
- ―Loki[src]
In an alternate universe, S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Hope van Dyne was tasked with a mission based outside of Odesa, Ukraine where she was eventually killed. Her killing ended up with Hank Pym, her father, starting out on a vengeful mission to assassinate the Avengers Initiative candidates.[10]
