Under the belief that he was completing his "final mission" for Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, John Walker brought his shield to the O.X.E. Vault in Utah and used it in his attempt to kill Yelena Belova. Once Walker discovered that he, Belova, Ava Starr, and Antonia Dreykov had each been sent to the Vault in an attempt to kill each other, he used the shield to help himself, Belova, Starr, and Bob escape from the Vault and defend themselves from soldiers from Val’s O.X.E. Group. He later wielded it while riding in Alexei Shostakov’s limousine, defending the team from gunfire during a pursuit by an O.X.E. convoy until the convoy was destroyed by Bucky Barnes.

Walker attempted to use the shield again during a battle in the Watchtower's penthouse suite between the newly united Thunderbolts and Bob, who had been fully converted into the Sentry. The shield did little damage to Sentry, who bent it with little issue. After fleeing their initial battle, Walker commented that Sentry had bent the shield into a "taco" shape. Despite the shield's bent state, Walker continued to use it to help the Thunderbolts defend the citizens of New York City from the newly awakened Void and to help rescue Bob from Void's control.

Walker continued to use the shield following Val's announcement of the Thunderbolts as the New Avengers, although it remained in its bent state even fourteen months later. The damage led Bucky Barnes to claim it no longer qualified as a shield at all, while Walker insisted it was still "a great shield."[2]

Capabilities[]

"He turned my shield into a taco!"
John Walker[src]

The shield is durable enough to withstand sustained turret fire from O.X.E. vehicles and a direct hit from one of Taskmaster's explosive arrows. The shield is also made of a sturdy enough material, that after it was bent out of shape, Walker, who is a super soldier with enhanced physical abilities, was incapable of bending it back. It can also be thrown as a projectile and is capable of bouncing back to the user with skilled handling. However, the shield's durability does have its limits, being ultimately bent out of shape during a confrontation with Sentry.

Trivia[]

  • In the comics, John Walker keeps photos of his deceased parents in the inside of the shield as a memento to help him focus during combat.
