The Tribal Council is a group composed of the elders of the tribes of Wakanda and led by the King of Wakanda.
History[]
Bashenga's Rule[]
Formation[]
Having unified the Wakandan Tribes under his rule, King Bashenga formed a Tribal Council which notably comprised the Elders of these tribes to serve as his advisors during his rule.[1]
T'Challa's Rule[]
Discussing Ulysses Klaue[]
In 2016, when T'Challa became King of Wakanda, the Tribal Council was composed of the elders of each tribe, as well as the Queen Ramonda and T'Challa's friend W'Kabi, who served as the King's personal advisor. T'Challa consulted the Tribal Council when Ulysses Klaue resurfaced and they discussed about the opportunity of arresting him. Although the Merchant Tribe Elder claimed that they needed T'Challa to act as a King rather than as a warrior, W'Kabi advocated in favor of Klaue's arrest, to which T'Challa agreed.[1]
Trial of Erik Killmonger[]
Later, the Tribal Council was gathered in emergency as a stranger had arrived in Wakanda with Klaue's corpse. The stranger, who was presented by Princess Shuri under the name of Erik Killmonger, claimed the throne of Wakanda, much to the astonishment of the Elders who laughed at the outsider's audacity. As the River Tribe Elder asked Killmonger who he truly was, Killmonger disclosed his name: N'Jadaka, son of the late Prince N'Jobu. Stunned by the reveal, the Tribal Council was forced to admit that N'Jadaka had the right to challenge T'Challa for the throne.[1]
Killmonger's Brief Rule[]
The Tribal Council attended the duel between T'Challa and N'Jadaka and reluctantly pledged fealty to the latter as he defeated and seemingly killed T'Challa. When he gathered his first Tribal Council, N'Jadaka announced his plan of sending vibranium weapons to the rest of the world so that oppressed people could trigger a global rebellion. Although Okoye disagreed with the decision, W'Kabi supported N'Jadaka's decision and the Tribal Council was forced to follow.[1]
Five Nations United[]
T'Challa eventually returned and defeated N'Jadaka, becoming King of Wakanda once again and gathering his former Tribal Council, minus W'Kabi who was imprisoned for having sided with N'Jadaka during the Battle of Mount Bashenga. Conversely, the Jabari Tribe, who had remained far from Wakanda's politics for centuries but had chose to support T'Challa over N'Jadaka, was granted a seat in the Tribal Council, which was taken by the Jabari leader M'Baku thus symbolizing the unification of all five nations of Wakanda.[1]
