- "You know why they call it 'programming,' right? Because you're being programmed through little screens, big screens, little morphine drips of sequels and prequels and zombies and Kanyes, Snapchats and Grumpy Cats, all designed by the media, corporate S.H.I.E.L.D. machine, and you're asleep, binge-watching the Apocalypse! You know what Tony Stark's armor is powered by?"
- ―Thurston Koenig[src]
Thurston Koenig is a slam poet activist and Eric, Billy, Sam, and LT Koenig's brother.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Living with Four Siblings[]
In his childhood, Thurston Koenig, along with his quadruplet brothers Eric, Sam and Billy, was picked on by his elder sister, LT Koenig. Unlike his other siblings, Koenig refused to join S.H.I.E.L.D., being very critical to the organization instead, especially after his brother Eric died at the hands of HYDRA mole Grant Ward.[1]
Protest Interrupted[]
Rescued by S.H.I.E.L.D.[]
- "Hey, hey, hey. Ho, ho. S.H.I.E.L.D. stormtroopers have got to go."
- ―Thurston Koenig to Phil Coulson[src]
While performing his usual one-man show at The Soul Patch, Koenig stepped onto the stage and greeted his audience by calling them Sheeple. He then questioned what programs they had been watching on television and said that they were being reprogrammed by organisations like S.H.I.E.L.D.; he claimed that he was all connected with the content like Kanye West and Grumpy Cat, causing his sister, LT Koenig, to cringe as she watched her brother's performance. As he went on, Koenig accused his audience of being asleep while binge-watching their own apocalypse.
However, Koenig's show was interrupted by S.H.I.E.L.D.'s arrival, as they had been sent to pick up LT. As a fight began to break out between LT and James Davis, Koenig stepped in to complain about his show getting ruined, only for LT to insist that he did that himself. Phil Coulson explained that all of the Koenigs were in danger after an assault on Billy and Sam Koenig, so S.H.I.E.L.D. was taking the other siblings into custody for their own protection. However, Koenig refused to come along, unwilling to have anything to do with the organization he despised, but LT then used her I.C.E.R. on him to knock him out, and he was taken aboard Zephyr One.[1]
Held on Zephyr One[]
- "We brought you here for your own protection."
"My own protection? I don't want your protection. I don't want anything to do with your agents of doom!" - ―Sam Koenig and Thurston Koenig[src]
Once he awoke, Koenig confronted LT Koenig for shooting him with an I.C.E.R.. She told him to stop whining, and Sam Koenig insisted that they had all been brought onto Zephyr One for their own protection. Koenig continued to insist that he did not want anything to do with S.H.I.E.L.D., LT and Sam rolled their eyes at this, and LT questioned why Koenig was like this, despite having grown up with the same parents, the same teachers, and the same liquor cabinet. LT then reminded Koenig about how his brothers had toughened up and all joined S.H.I.E.L.D., and asked what Koenig had done.
However, as Koenig noted, this had resulted in their brother Eric being murdered by Grant Ward, something he blamed on LT. LT insisted that Eric had died with a purpose and questioned what Koenig had done for the world. Sam finally stepped in and reminded them that they were family. When Sam brought his siblings in for a group hug, LT responded by punching him in the gut. As Koenig questioned if he could go back home, Phil Coulson informed him that he would have to remain on the plane for his own safety, and had Koenig escorted to his room by S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, much to Koenig's annoyance.
Eventually, Koenig learned that his brother Billy Koenig had been rescued from the Watchdogs. Koenig reunited with his brother and hugged him, expressing his great relief that Billy was finally safe, before continuing to insist that they were all still sheep for just believing in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s mission, causing all the other Koenigs to roll their eyes. With that, Coulson then informed all of the Koenigs that S.H.I.E.L.D. had a Quinjet ready to take them back home for their own safety, and thanked them all for their services to S.H.I.E.L.D. LT insisted that S.H.I.E.L.D. could call on them at any time.[1]
