"Nash claimed he had a gift."
"Claimed?"
"According to records he couldn't affect a person's behavior. But he could, on occasion, predict it."
"But S.H.I.E.L.D. crossed him off the Index after his accident because of his supposed catatonic state."
Skye, Melinda May and Phil Coulson[src]

Thomas Nash was a former candidate for S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Index who was used by HYDRA as a fake Clairvoyant. As Nash was discovered by S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, he was killed by Grant Ward.

Biography

Early Life

"According to Index archives, Nash has been on S.H.I.E.L.D.'s radar for about six years. Originally a bond trader in Canada doing very well for himself. Then the Canadian government recruited him to a secret Department H-type program."
"They were looking for people with psychic abilities."
"Specifically people who could control human behavior."
Skye and Melinda May[src]

Thomas Nash, a bond trader in Canada, was on S.H.I.E.L.D.'s radar for six years entering on the Index due to his alleged psychic abilities. Later he was recruited to Department H, a top-secret organization that was recruiting people who could control other people's behavior through psychic abilities. Nash stayed catatonic for four years after having a head-on collision.[1]

HYDRA Puppet

"I'm Thomas Nash. Mr. Po gave me that other name. A bit dramatic for my taste."
―Thomas Nash[src]
Clairvoyant

Nash believed to be the Clairvoyant

Eventually, Nash was approached by HYDRA members, who used him to convince S.H.I.E.L.D. that Nash was the Clairvoyant, instead of John Garrett. While chasing leads on the identity of the Clairvoyant, Melinda May and Felix Blake were sent to Tranquility Bridge assisted living home in Macon, Georgia to determine if Nash was their target. While there, Blake was critically injured by Deathlok, prompting S.H.I.E.L.D. to make Nash their prime suspect.

Thomas-Nash-Dies

Nash is shot and killed by Grant Ward

Following the Tag Rounds implanted on Deathlok by Blake, Phil Coulson led a raiding team consisting, in part, of Garrett and Grant Ward to an abandoned race track in Pensacola, Florida. With the assistance of the Golden Retrievers guided by Leo Fitz, Coulson and Garrett find Nash in a room surrounded by computers. Operating the computers, HYDRA played several messages to taunt S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and inform them about the upcoming threat, before Nash was killed by Ward.[2]

Behind the Scenes

  • The quote "A bit dramatic for my taste" used by Thomas Nash is an almost word-by-word quotation to one of Victoria Hand's quotes in the episode The Hub. The writers of the show referenced it to make viewers believe that Hand was the actual Clairvoyant.
