The Theft of the Space Stone was the attempt by the Avengers of acquiring the Tesseract from the past. After their mission in New York resulted in only the Mind Stone being retrieved, Iron Man and Captain America went back to 1970 to Camp Lehigh - this was due to Tony knowing the Cube would be there due to his father, as well as Pym Particles due to Hank Pym, as they needed more in order to return to 2023.

Background

Iron Man and Captain America had previously went back to the Battle of New York with Ant-Man and Hulk, in an attempt to retrieve the Mind Stone, Space Stone, and Time Stone so they could bring back the victims of the Decimation. While Hulk went to the New York Sanctum to fetch the Time Stone, the others attempted to get the Space and Mind stones from the 2012 Avengers. Their plan initially succeed, with Iron Man retrieving the Tesseract and getting ready to leave when the irritated 2012 Hulk (angered at using the stairs) came crashing in. This caused Iron Man to drop the Tesseract, which landed next to the 2012 Loki, who quickly grabbed and used it to escape before anyone could stop him. With the Space Stone gone, Captain America and Iron Man decided to return to the 1970s so they could not only get what they need, but also retrieve more Pym particles for their eventual return to the present day.[1]
