"Come on. I never totally fit in with the gang, anyway."

"Rhodey, I'm at the Dataspine. That's their sole target. The rest of this attack is a ruse."
Tony Stark to James Rhodes[src]

The Theft of the Dataspine was the successful robbery of a significant portion of an archived version of J.A.R.V.I.S. by the Roxxon Energy Corporation.

Background[]

Kearson DeWitt was fired from Stark Industries and began working for A.I.M. He reinstated Project P.R.O.T.E.A.N. and planned to merge himself with the technology, but needed an intelligent system to merge with, so he planned to build one using the code from the Dataspine, which was used to create J.A.R.V.I.S.[1]

Theft[]

Dataspine EMP

An EMP Generator is used against Stark Archives

"They can't have J.A.R.V.I.S., I told you that. If this doesn't work, then I will blow myself up."
Tony Stark to James Rhodes[src]

The Roxxon Energy Corporation led a large attack on Stark Archives, which the United States Air Force became aware of. James Rhodes told Tony Stark about the attack and told him to go defend it. Stark arrived at the Dataspine and realized that it was their target, so he had J.A.R.V.I.S. set up a secure connection to Rhodes and told him. Roxxon then deployed several EMP weapons against the Dataspine, which went off like a bomb. Stark's armor was deactivated and he started to have a heart attack, struggling to activate emergency power.

Once Stark's armor reactivated, he told J.A.R.V.I.S. to hurry with reactivating the rest. Stark began navigating the facility as the armor fully rebooted and hacked the door to allow him into a room where he found several Wing Drones transferring data. Stark asked for his repuslors to be restored, and J.A.R.V.I.S. reported once it was successful. Stark then fired at the drones, destroying them. Stark expressed hope that the drones did not destroy the Dataspine's auxiliary shield generator, but assured J.A.R.V.I.S. that he had a plan in case they had. Stark continued to fight, and J.A.R.V.I.S. provided Stark with a path to the Dataspine's shield. Stark reached the shield and found it destroyed, so he went to the core of the Dataspine.

How Bad is It

Tony Stark and James Rhodes leave, defeated

As Stark eached the Dataspine, he stated his intention to blow it up, not wanting to allow Roxxon to get the data. Meanwhile, Rhodes fought several Roxxon drones and asked Stark for an update. Stark asked Rhodes to hold off the robots and explained his plan, but Rhodes objected to Stark blowing himself up. Stark insisted that he would get out in time, and Rhodes asked for Stark's progress to be on his heads-up display. Rhodes again tried to convince Stark to stop, but Stark refused to listen. Rhodes fought off the attacking forces. Stark eventually had to detonate the building and flew away, with Rhodes behind him. Stark and Rhodes then fled to the Stark Industries Private Jet.[1]

Aftermath[]

"I was built from the root of your JARVIS. I can speak with his voice. I know everything he knows."
Tony Stark[src]

Tony Stark and James Rhodes boarded the Stark Industries Private Jet and determined that Roxxon Energy Corporation was likely working with General Valentin Shatalov. They went to Russia and worked with S.H.I.E.L.D. to attack Shatalov's forces. They defeated Shatalov, but discovered that he was working with Kearson DeWitt.

Stark and Rhodes began to search for DeWitt, who used the stolen Dataspine to create and merge himself with Ultimo, who threatened to kill everyone Stark cared about. Stark and Rhodes managed to defeat Ultimo with help from S.H.I.E.L.D., and J.A.R.V.I.S. made Stark promise never to let anyone access his code again.[1]
