- "Ah, Tony. When I ordered the hit on you, I worried that I was killing the golden goose."
- ―Obadiah Stane to Tony Stark[src]
Obadiah Stane managed to obtain the original blueprints to Tony Stark's original armor but was unable to crack the code of miniaturizing the Arc Reactor. Additionally, Stane learned that Pepper Potts had figured out his plan, leading Stane to make a drastic measure in stealing the Arc Reactor from Stark.[2]

Obadiah Stane betrays Tony Stark
- "Breathe. Easy, easy. You remember this one, right? It's a shame the government didn't approve it. There's so many applications for causing short-term paralysis."
- ―Obadiah Stane to Tony Stark[src]
Obadiah Stane broke into Tony Stark's Mansion and temporarily paralyzed him with a Sonic Taser. Stane pulled out the power source from Stark's heart, while revealing he put a hit on him. After he departed, Stark realized his only hope for survival was the preserved Arc Reactor that Pepper Potts gave him in a display case. He struggled to get the power source but managed to get it installed as James Rhodes arrived.[2]
Aftermath[]

Iron Man vs. Iron Monger
- "She's fine. She's with five agents. They're about to arrest Obadiah."
"That's not going to be enough." - ―James Rhodes and Tony Stark[src]
Obadiah Stane used a stolen miniaturized Arc Reactor to power his own armor, but Tony Stark attacked Stane before he could kill Pepper Potts, culminating to a showdown across the streets of Los Angeles and ending in a standoff on top of Stark Industries Headquarters. Stark was able to stop Stane by ordering Potts to overload the Arc Reactor powering the Stark Industries building, sending an electrical surge which killed Stane.[2]
