The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is an upcoming American web television special, based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. The special is a sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Avengers: Endgame, and Thor: Love and Thunder. It will be an installment of Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The special is produced by Marvel Studios and will be released on Disney+ in December 2022.[1]

The special is written and directed by James Gunn and stars Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon, Vin Diesel as Groot, Karen Gillan as Nebula, and Pom Klementieff as Mantis.

On December 10, 2020, during Disney’s 2020 Investor Day, Kevin Feige announced that James Gunn would be writing and directing a Guardians of the Galaxy holiday special for Disney+, that would be filmed during Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and that would be released in December 2022.[1] That same day, Gunn revealed that he had been discussing the special with Feige over the years and that he was inspired by The Star Wars Holiday Special which he unironically loved as a kid.[2]

On April 22, 2021, James Gunn revealed that he had completed the first draft of the special's script[3] and confirmed that the special would be set between Thor: Love and Thunder and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.[4]

On July 27, 2021, in an interview with Collider, Gunn revealed that the special would be under 40 minutes long and confirmed that it would serve as a precursor to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.[5]

On October 28, 2021, it was reported that the working title of the special was "Poptart".[6]

On November 8, 2021, James Gunn announced that the special had begun production.[7]
