The Fantastic Four is an upcoming superhero film, based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. A reboot of the Fantastic Four franchise, it is the thirty-seventh film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the first installment of Phase Six. The film is set to be released on July 25, 2025.[7]

On December 14, 2017, The Walt Disney Company announced plans to acquire 21st Century Fox. The acquisition would provide Disney with the opportunity to reunite the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool with the Marvel family under one roof.[13]

On March 20, 2019, The Walt Disney Company's acquisition of 21st Century Fox became effective.[14] As a result, all Fantastic Four related films that were in development were put "on hold"[15] and eventually cancelled.[16]

On July 20, 2019, at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, Kevin Feige announced that many projects, including a Fantastic Four reboot, were in development.[17][18]

On December 10, 2020, during Disney's 2020 Investor Day, Kevin Feige announced that Jon Watts would be directing the film.[19]

On April 29, 2022, Deadline reported that Jon Watts had exited the film.[20]

On July 23, 2022, at San Diego Comic-Con 2022, Kevin Feige announced that the film would be released on November 8, 2024. That same day, it was revealed that the film was scheduled to begin production in 2023.[21] Four days later, Kevin Feige revealed that the film would not be an origin story.[22]

On August 26, 2022, Deadline reported that Matt Shakman was in early talks to direct the film.[23] That same day, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Shakman had dropped out as the director of the new Star Trek film due to scheduling conflicts with Fantastic Four.[24]

On September 10, 2022, at D23 Expo 2022, Kevin Feige officially announced that Matt Shakman would be directing the film.[1]

On September 21, 2022, Deadline reported that Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer would be writing the film's script.[25]

On October 11, 2022, it was announced that the film had been pushed back from its initial release date to February 14, 2025.[26]

On February 7, 2023, in an interview with The Wrap, Matt Shakman revealed that the film was scheduled to begin production in early 2024.[27]

On March 31, 2023, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Josh Friedman would be rewriting the film's script, replacing Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer.[2]

On May 5, 2023, The Hollywood Reporter reported that the film was scheduled to begin production in January 2024 in London.[28]

On June 13, 2023, it was announced that the film had been pushed back from its February 14, 2025 release date to May 2, 2025.[29]

On October 20, 2023, in an interview with The Playlist, Matt Shakman revealed that Cameron Squires had co-written the film's script.[3]

On November 15, 2023, Deadline reported that Pedro Pascal was in talks to join the cast of the film and that he would portray Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic.[30]

On February 7, 2024, SAG-AFTRA listed Pedro Pascal as being involved in the film on their website, although his casting and ultimate involvement in the film were yet to be confirmed.[31] As a result, SAG-AFTRA removed the Fantastic Four mention from their site, although many social media accounts made posts stating that SAG-AFTRA had officially confirmed Pascal's role as Mister Fantastic. One such social media post was shared on Instagram by the film's director Matt Shakman, ultimately confirming the casting.[32]

On February 14, 2024, it was announced that Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Joseph Quinn would portray Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Susan Storm/Invisible Woman, Ben Grimm/Thing and Johnny Storm/Human Torch, respectively, in the film. It was also announced that the film would be released on July 25, 2025.[7]

On February 21, 2024, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Eric Pearson would be polishing the film's script.[4]

On April 3, 2024, Deadline reported that Julia Garner had joined the cast of the film and that she would portray Shalla-Bal/Silver Surfer.[8] That same day, it was reported that Galactus would be the film's main antagonist as a result.[33]

On May 2, 2024, Deadline reported that Paul Walter Hauser had joined the cast of the film in an undisclosed role. It was also reported that Peter Cameron had contributed to the film's script.[5]

On May 9, 2024, Deadline reported that John Malkovich had joined the cast of the film in an undisclosed role.[10] That same day, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Ralph Ineson had joined the cast of the film and that he would portray Galactus.[9] The next day, it was reported that the film would begin production at the end of July.[34]

On May 15, 2024, Deadline reported that Natasha Lyonne had joined the cast of the film in an undisclosed role.[11]

On June 26, 2024, it was confirmed by Kevin Feige during an interview on The Official Marvel Podcast that the film would be a period piece set in the 1960s, and that filming would begin on July 29, 2024.[35]
