The Avengers: The Avengers Initiative is a comic book prequel to The Avengers film. It was written by Fred Van Lente with art duties covered by Ron Lim.
Synopsis
Hawkeye is ordered to infiltrate the Helicarrier in order to test the security of the Avengers Initiative database.
Plot
At a secret US Naval Base in an undisclosed location, the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier is moored in the harbour overnight. Meanwhile, a mysterious masked figure clad in black tactical gear swims up to the hull and boards the Helicarrier through the vessel’s bilge pumps.
The intruder then proceeds to the Helicarrier’s archive room where he takes out the S.H.I.E.L.D agent on guard there. Accessing the archive room’s computer terminal he initiates a download of a Top Secret Level 7 briefing given by Nick Fury to the World Security Council, which outlines the candidates who have been selected for the "Avengers Initiative".
As Fury’s briefing plays out, we see four tales highlighting each candidate’s respective abilities – Captain America chasing down a HYDRA agent in London, Hulk battling mercenary bandits in India, Iron Man challenging two wing-suit pilots to a race in Dubai at the request of “Omar” (a wealthy Arabian business man), and Thor battling “Imir”, who has taken over the Golden Forge of Asgard and is holding the Dwarven smiths captive.
Midway through the briefing, Black Widow appears and attacks the intruder. This continues until the conclusion when Nick Fury enters to break them up. He explains that the entire incident has been a test of the Helicarrier’s security systems, and the masked intruder is revealed to be Hawkeye in disguise.
