- ―Taloa Lopez to Maya Lopez[src]
Taloa Lopez was a member of the Choctaw tribe and the mother of Maya Lopez who had the ability to heal others. In 2007, due to tampered brakes, she was killed in a car crash which left her daughter with an amputated leg. She later returned through a vision to help and empower her now adult daughter in her vendetta against Wilson Fisk.
Biography[]
Miracle Baby[]
Born Through Strength[]
- "That night with your mother and I... it was a life or death ordeal. Taloa came into this world and set about lifting the pain of others. She had a gift... she was a healer."
- ―Chula Battiest to Maya Lopez[src]
While Chula Battiest was pregnant with Taloa, there were complications at the hospital. Battiest left the hospital to have her child in the woods surrounded by her sister. Though experiencing much pain, Battiest was given strength by her ancestors, Chafa, Lowak and Tuklo. This allowed Taloa to not only be birthed, but also be given certain powers.[1]
Family[]
Marriage[]
- "I begged her not to marry you. I told her those Lopez boys are no good. Thugs. Criminals."
- ―Chula Battiest to William Lopez[src]
Taloa grew up with her loving mother, as well as a father figure in Skully. She soon met and married William Lopez despite Battiest's warning not to as she disliked Lopez. The two had a daughter, Maya, who inherited Taloa's deafness.[2]
Broken Bird[]
- "The bird didn’t just fall, did it?"
"I didn’t mean to hurt it. I just wanted to see if I could hit it. I’m sorry."
"You can’t do this. We don’t harm living things." - ―Taloa and Maya Lopez[src]
Taloa was working on the porch of the Battiest Residence when Maya Lopez came to her with a woodpecker wrapped in a blanket, explaining she found it injured. Taloa asked Maya if she really found it injured or if she did it. Maya confessed that she just wanted to see if she could hit it with a slingshot. Taloa told her that they did not hurt living things.
Taloa then went on to explain the story of the woodpeckers, which the Choctaw call the Biskinik. The Biskinik are sacred and used to carve message sin trees to warn others of danger. A sad Maya asked if she could fix the bird. Taloa summoned her healing powers and simply put her fingers to the bird, allowing it to be healed. She then helped Maya release it back into the wild.[3]
Death[]
- "Will you tell Mama I’m sorry? It’s my fault that she’s hurt. I made her take me to the store."
- ―Maya Lopez to William Lopez[src]
In 2007, Taloa sat around a campfire with William Lopez, Chula Battiest and Skully while Bonnie and Maya Lopez played in a tent by the playscape. Taloa listened to Skully tell a story, which he finished by stating that everybody should love something as much as the man in his story. William then grabbed Taloa's hand, signifying that she is the case for him. The two then turned around and saw Bonnie and Maya's shadows in the tent.
Taloa watched Battiest and Skully leave before going back inside and cleaning the dishes. William walked over to her to help and jokingly asked how long she thought Bonnie and Maya would stay outside in the now pouring rain. Taloa claimed they would last five minutes or less. Right on cue, the girls ran inside with Maya asking for hot chocolate. Taloa told her they were out of it, but said that she could accompany her to the store in order to get some more.
In the car, Taloa looked at Maya and smiled before hitting the brakes while approaching a stop sign. However, she found that the brake lines were cut. She frantically tried to press the brakes while Maya asked what was wrong. Before they knew it, a truck came across the intersection, hitting the driver's side and killing Taloa on impact. Maya woke up with a shard of glass deep in her leg. She then looked at Taloa, who was missing the left side of her temple. Maya cried until help arrived.[2]
Legacy[]
Immediate Aftermath[]
- "I found out who cut the brakes. They’re taken care of."
"Oh, and you think that makes me feel better? That another family is now destroyed?"
"It makes me feel better." - ―William Lopez and Chula Battiest[src]
The family all handled Taloa's death in different ways. Maya Lopez was rushed to the hospital where her leg had to be amputated. William Lopez watched her get helped outside of her hospital room when Chula Battiest arrived with Skully. William told her that he had already found and killed the people who cut the brake lines. However, Battiest asked if he really thought that made her feel better, that he had destroyed another family, and William replied that it made him feel better.
Battiest voiced her displeasure in William, feeling like her heart was broken from her daughter's death. William told her that his brother got him a job in New York City and he and Maya would be leaving soon. Battiest told him New York was not far enough away from her. As Battiest walked away, Skully assured William that she was only just grieving. William said they all were. He then walked into Maya's room and talked to her. Maya believed it was her fault, which William assured her it was not; Maya then asked if her mother was okay.
Once Maya's amputated leg got stable enough to be discharged, William and her left for New York City, with Maya having no grasp of what was really happening. Before leaving, she asked Bonnie if she was coming. Bonnie wanted to, but Battiest held her back, refusing to let her leave as the Lopezes drove away.[2]
A Broken Heart[]
- "There’s a unique... connection... between... a mother and her child. An unbreakable connection. When... your mother was killed... I... My heart... shattered. I wanted to die. You..."
"You disowned me." - ―Chula Battiest and Maya Lopez[src]
When Maya Lopez returned to Tamaha in 2025, Chula Battiest was not yet ready to meet with her as her heart was truly broken by her daughter's death. She believed Lopez was dangerous and a bad influence on people such as Biscuits.[2][4] Eventually, Maya was brought to Battiest by Henry Lopez as Maya was being subjected to many visions that she could not understand. Battiest heard these and explained that they were ancestors and she saw them when giving birth to Taloa. Battiest then told Lopez how a mother and daughter's connection is unbreakable. Through decades of built up grief, Battiest explained that when Taloa died, her heart was shattered and she wanted to die. Lopez spoke up, saying that Battiest disowned her, but Battiest assured him she did not, but she disowned her father. Lopez argued that her father always said that Battiest destroyed the family and wanted nothing to to with them. Battiest brutally confessed that she could not bear to be around Lopez and she reminded her of Taloa. Lopez angrily told her that she left at a time where Lopez needed her, but she chose herself. This made Battiest break down in tears.[1]
Helping Her Daughter[]
- "Now it's time for the pain... to go away."
"I can't. I don't know how."
"I will help you. Your ancestors will help you. You come from a long line of very special women." - ―Taloa and Maya Lopez[src]
Fearing that Chula Battiest was taken, Maya Lopez went to her house only to see Taloa standing in front of her. Taloa was able to echo to Lopez, just like the other ancestors had. Taloa noted that Maya must have been hurting. Then she placed her fingers on Maya's chest in order to transport her to her trauma. They two arrived in the crashed car the night of Taloa's death.
Taloa told Maya that she was not alone as everyone that came before are a part of her, because they echo through her. She then placed her fingers back on Maya's chest, bringing them back to the present where Maya was tearing up. Taloa said that it was time for the pain to go away. However, Maya said she did not know how to make that happen. Taloa explained that she and all of the ancestors will help as Lopez comes from a long line of strong and special women who had fought for their family and now it was Lopez's turn.
Maya said that all she brought was danger, but Taloa told her she needed to stay and fight for them. She then told her to remember her gifts, strategy, cunning, ferocity and love. Taloa then stepped aside, showing how all of those qualities were infused into a dress that Battiest had made for Maya. The dress showed that Maya is a part of her ancestors and they are a part of her. Before leaving, she reminded Maya that she loved her, always.
While fighting Kingpin, Maya saw that Bonnie and Chula Battiest were captured. Fisk then confirmed that he killed William Lopez. However, Maya did not lash out at this, but instead untucked her robe, revealing her full dress and allowing her to echo to her ancestors, who metaphorically stood beside her. Taloa and the others then helped channel powers into Bonnie and Battiest for them to use to take down Kingpin. Once Maya got the upperhand, she used the same method that Taloa used to access Fisk's trauma. However, she realized that his trauma was too great to be healed.[3]
