Synopsis[]
Maya finds herself at a crossroads, facing the shadows of her past and contemplating her future.
Plot[]
In 2008, Maya Lopez goes to buy some ice cream after school, but the vendor talks down to her because of her deafness. Wilson Fisk, who had been watching it from the far, gets enraged and asks Lopez to wait in the car for him. Fisk drags the vendor to the nearby alley and brutally beats him down, before noticing that Lopez is standing nearby and sees everything. He gets concerned that Lopez might get scared of him, but she is barely fazed, even kicking down the vendor herself, before they walk out together. In 2021, Fisk congratulates Lopez that her training has concluded and she is now ready to run his operations, while ordering his men to kill the interpreter.
In the present, as Lopez is confronted by Fisk, she gets subdued by his men and Fisk applies the Translator Contact Lens to her eyes, which allows her to understand him without ASL. Lopez is shocked to see that Fisk is alive, as she thought she killed him back in New York City, to which Fisk tells her that he simply wanted to have a usual dinner with her like before. As the two walk inside the Battiest Residence, Fisk says that he is not angry at her but rather impressed, saying that Lopez might be somewhat glad to see Fisk alive, which she promptly denies. Fisk reminds her of how they used to treat each other as family, saying that he is still on her side no matter what.
As the two sit down at the table, Lopez ignores his attempts to chat and bluntly asks why did he come to her. Fisk says that he has a proposition, she can have her own empire and everything she ever wanted, on a condition she comes back to New York with him. He tells Lopez that she has time to consider until the next day and leaves, while she meets with Henry Lopez and tells him everything. He makes it clear that he does not want Lopez to take Fisk on his offer, warning him that following him is too dangerous. Henry tells her that after her father got killed, he tried to get out but Fisk threatened his life and had him run his operations in Oklahoma. Lopez reminds him that he left her alone in New York and Henry apologizes, saying that he was too scared and confused to be by her side.
While the Choctaw community is preparing for the powwow, both Chula Battiest and Lopez experience the memories of their ancestors, with Lopez getting the worst of it. While she is unresponsive, Henry drives her to Chula's house so she could help, although Lopez is not happy about it. The two have a rather awkward reunion, and Lopez explains that ever since she returned to Tamaha, she has been experiencing strange visions. Chula recognizes her visions as she saw the same things when she was giving birth to Lopez's mother. Due to the medical complications, Chula was taken out of the hospital to the wilderness where gave birth to Taloa during the Choctaw ritual.
Chula explains that she had a unique connection with her daugher, and was heartbroken when Taloa was killed, but Lopez reminds her that Chula practically disowned her after that. Chula says that she disowned only William, but could not bear to be around Lopez as she reminded her too much of her mother. Chula notes that their visions might be connected to the generations of their ancestors echoing through them when they need them, but Lopez angrily tells her that she only needed Chula but she chose herself over Lopez, before walking out. While Lopez drives away with Henry, still mad at Chula, she comes to her workshop and starts to work on something for her granddaughter.
Lopez comes to the Choctaw Casino where she confronts Fisk with a gun, something that Fisk did see coming. Fisk says that he and Lopez always had connections and she never had any issues with commiting crimes for him, but Lopez replies that their bonds were a lie, even the lenses he commisioned implying that he just could not learn ASL properly for her. Fisk admits that he failed her in the same way his own father failed him, so he shows her a hammer he had on him. Fisk tells her that his father used to abuse him and his mother, so Fisk had to kill him with the hammer, something that horrifies Lopez. Fisk offers her to kill him as well so both of them could obtain freedom, but Lopez puts it down.
As Fisk tells her he will be waiting for her, Lopez reminisces over the times they had together, ultimately choosing to drive away from town and leave everything behind. Fisk gets informed that Lopez skipped town and his men failed to tail her, which utterly infuriates him.
