- "Power, unearned, can be a very volatile force, cousin. It'll get the best of you, eventually. On your plane, or on ours."
- ―T'Challa to Erik Killmonger[src]
Prince T'Challa was the Prince of Wakanda and the royal protector, known as Black Panther. T'Challa followed the trail of a stolen vibranium to Salvage Yard where he encountered Ulysses Klaue and James Rhodes; however, he was murdered by his cousin, Erik Killmonger, who used his death to destabilize the relations between the United States of America and Wakanda.
Biography[]
Hunting Ulysses Klaue[]
- "Our quarrel is not with you, Colonel."
"Oh, really? 'Cause you're sending me mixed messages right now."
"Let me take the vibranium back where it belongs." - ―Black Panther and James Rhodes[src]
As the War Dogs received an intel that Ulysses Klaue arranged a deal with Stark Industries to sell them the stolen vibranium, Black Panther went on a mission to intercept Klaue. Black Panther arrived at the Salvage Yard and infiltrated the Churchill, where he caused a blackout, leaving Klaue's mercenaries disorientated. Using the advantages of the darkness and his Panther Habit, Black Panther attacked the mercenaries, taking them out one by one, as their bullets failed to penetrate his armor. Eventually, as he took down all the mercenaries, James Rhodes was the last one standing, as he tried to shoot Black Panther with his gun.
Black Panther effortlessly disarmed Rhodes and tried to reason with him, claiming that Wakanda had no quarrell with Rhodes, although he was hesitant to lower his guard. Black Panther told Rhodes to stay out of his way and allow him to take the vibranium back to Wakanda; however, Erik Killmonger said that this is not going to happen, before attacking him and Rhodes with the Sonic Taser. Suffering from the weapon's effects, T'Challa took off his mask and saw Killmonger, who told his cousin that he wished it could end another way. In the last effort, T'Challa attempted to attack Killmonger, but he responded by increasing the power of the Soniс Taser, which eventually led to T'Challa's death.[1]
Legacy[]
American-Wakandan War[]
Following T'Challa's death, Erik Killmonger used his gauntlet to kill James Rhodes and left the Sonic Taser in his hand, making it look like T'Challa and Rhodes killed each other. As their bodies were discovered, both Wakanda and the United States accused each other of the murder, as T'Chaka stated that Wakanda will not sit idly while they resources are being pillaged, and their people are being killed by the American nationalists.
Later on, Killmonger would kill Tony Stark and stage it like the Wakandans were responsible which was seen by the U.S. as a casus belli to declare a war on Wakanda. While the U.S. military was preparing to unleash the Stark Liberator Drones on Wakandans, Killmonger reached the Wakandan border and informed T'Chaka about the upcoming American invasion. Killmonger and Ramonda would later lead the Wakandan armed forces into a battle of the Golden City, which meant that Killmonger succeeded in his plan to throw both the U.S. and Wakanda into a flame of war.[1]
Ancestral Plane Reunion[]
- "Was it worth it, my cousin?"
"Yeah. I did what I had to do."
"For what? A throne?" - ―T'Challa and Erik Killmonger[src]
As Erik Killmonger became the Prince of Wakanda and was chosen as the next Black Panther, he accepted the Heart-Shaped Herb and visited the Ancestral Plane, one of the panthers turned into T'Challa and approached Killmonger. T'Challa asked his cousin was the result worth all the death and suffering he brought upon people, to which Killmonger replied that he did what he had to do. T'Challa wondered if Killmonger sought a throne of Wakanda, but Killmonger claimed that he sought vengeance for his father and all black people around the world who suffered from oppression while Wakanda did nothing.
Listening to Killmonger, T'Challa stated that Killmonger believed that the cure to human suffering was more suffering, but he said that the cure was power and now he was the one who had it. T'Challa told Killmonger that he simply stole the power that never belonged to him and the unearned power was a rather volatile force. He remarked that his actions would eventually catch up to him, whether it would be on the Earth plane or the afterlife, but Killmonger did not listen to him.[1]
