"Odin and I drowned entire civilizations in blood and tears. Where do you think all this gold came from?"
Hela to Thor[src]

The Subjugation of the Nine Realms was a conflict orchestrated by King Odin Borson of Asgard in an attempt to conquer the Nine Realms and establish an empire.

Background

King Bor lost his life in battle, resulting in his son, Odin, becoming the ruler of Asgard.[2] Odin later gave birth to his first daughter, Hela, putting under intense training during her childhood.[1]

Subjugation

"We were unstoppable. I was his weapon in the conquests that built Asgard's empire. One by one, the realms became ours. But then, simply because my ambition outgrew his, he banished me, caged me, locked me away like an animal."
Hela to Skurge[src]

Hela and her father started to wage war on other kingdoms, as they wanted to control the realms. Over the centuries, Hela and Odin, as well as Fenris and the Berserkers eventually conquered all the other realms, which embarked the creation of Asgard's empire.[1]

Aftermath

"Her violent appetites were beyond my controls. I couldn't stop it, so...I imprisoned her. Locked her away"
Odin to Thor and Loki[src]

Odin, despite his ambition to conquer more worlds, realized that the only way to have peace in the universe was to bring the Nine Realms together. Odin later deemed Hela as an obstacle in bringing peace to the cosmos as she ambitiously wanted to conquer and control more realms. After massacring everyone in the Asgardian Palace, Odin engaged in a duel with his eldest daughter, during which he defeated her. However, he realized that he could not kill her and decided to banish her to Hel for a millennia.

Although Odin managed to imprison her, Hela attempted to escape the place many times using different methods. To stop her, he sent the legendary female warriors called Valkyries to fight her back. After she massacred and defeated all the Valkyrie, except for Brunnhilde, Odin went to Hel himself and fought her a second time in which he emerged as the victor. Odin used his life as a lock on Hela's imprisonment, making sure that she would never be released until he died.[1]
