Steven Grant "Steve" Rogers is a member of the Howling Commandos known as Captain America.

Biography[]

World War II[]

Becoming Captain America[]

"I've seen him in newsreels-- Captain America!"
HYDRA Agent[src]

Steve Rogers joined the war effort in World War II and developed a reputation as a hero known as Captain America. He starred in several newsreels.[2]

Capture of the Leviathan[]

"Hate to tell you boys-- but the joke's on you. We knew that fat, juicy, and very lonely freighter would be too sweet a target for you to resist. You dummies fell for the bait. And now I'm reeling this big fish in."
―Steve Rogers[src]

Rogers set a trap with a freighter to be destroyed by the Leviathan. Once the freighter was destroyed, Rogers burst into the submarine and asked to borrow their boat since the freighter was his. HYDRA agents appeared and opened fire at Rogers, who blocked them with his shield. An agent shouted that two agents would take the place of one that had fallen. Rogers threw his shield at the agents and commented that it would therefore be better to fight them all at once. He fought through all the agents and admitted that HYDRA had fallen for a trap.

Having only needed twenty minutes to take the submarine, Rogers surfaced it to meet with the rest of the Howling Commandos and asked for their help piloting the submarine. Once inside, Jim Morita hacked into the submarine and traced its route back to the HYDRA U-Base, so Rogers reminded the team that their mission was to shut down the base before what HYDRA was building there could be used on the field. Rogers turned to James Montgomery Falsworth and asked for a strategy, so Falsworth suggested they surprise HYDRA. Falsworth laid out a battle plan to fight the HYDRA agents once they reached the base.[2]

Attack on the HYDRA U-Base[]

"That creature dragged our Commandos into a flooded section of U-Base. And I'm going to bring them back if I have to swim to the bottom of the ocean to do it."
―Steve Rogers[src]

As the Leviathan reached the HYDRA U-Base, Rogers and the other Howling Commandos prepared for a fight. Rogers counted down for the battle, but found the base to be completely empty. Rogers and the Howling Commandos exited the submarine and became concerned that the garrison was simply hiding. While Dum Dum Dugan organized a split up for the team, Rogers went off on his own to investigate. He came across a laboratory with a hydra drawn on plans, realizing that there was no weapon in there.

Rogers discovers the Tentacle Monster

James Montgomery Falsworth radioed for help for himself and Jim Morita. Rogers ran after them, asking on the radio what was happening. However, he stopped in his tracks when he saw Falsworth and Morita getting attacked by a large Tentacle Monster. Rogers threw his shield at the monster, cutting off one of its tentacles, but the tentacle grew back, surprising Rogers. Rogers watched with horror as Falsworth and Morita were dragged down into the water.

Rogers ran back to the Commandos, where Dugan told him that they were likely to do better against the monster. Rogers said that it did not help him feel better and stated his intention to go under the water and retrieve his teammates. Dugan insisted that it would not be a smart plan, explaining that Gabe Jones was attempting to find useful information from the laboratory's data. Jones explained that the researched did not mention a creature, but rather that HYDRA were using the base to experiment on humans to create cellular regeneration. Dugan concluded that the monster was the result of the experiment and that it likely attacked the staff. Looking at a plan for the base, Rogers commented that the flooded sub-basement was small, and Jacques Dernier said that he could plant bombs in the right places to destroy the ceiling above the monster. Rogers agreed to retrieve Falsworth and Morita while Dernier prepared the explosives.

Rogers put on a respirator as Dugan told him that he would have thirty minutes before the bombs go off. Rogers swam to a place where he could breathe and noted graffiti on the walls, including several words in German and several names. Jones contacted Rogers and added further details he had translated, saying that the HYDRA scientists had developed a Hydra Serum which they were worried leaked into the water supply during an earthquake which hit the U-Base two days prior. However, Rogers expressed frustration at the lack of information explaining the monster's origin and what happened to the staff. Rogers found the monster and turned off his radio. He tried to sneak up on the monster, but realized it was surrounding him.

Rogers determines to help the Tentacle Monster

Falsworth shouted that the monster had led Rogers into a trap, confusing Rogers as he was surprised the monster was smart enough to do that. He attempted to reason with the monster, but it roared at him. Rogers threw his shield at the tentacle holding Falsworth, freeing him, and guessed out loud the the monster used to be a jellyfish. He had Falsworth take Morita away from the fight as Dernier gave Rogers a two-minute warning. Rogers prepared to leave, but saw the monster writing a request for help into the wall. Realizing that the staff had been turned into the monster by the serum, Rogers pushed the monster out of the way of the explosion, protecting it under his shield. Rogers shared his realization with the Commandos and suggested they take the monster back to Howard Stark. Dugan noted that the HYDRA agents would not do the same for them, and Rogers insisted that that was what made them in the right.[2]

Personality[]

"Not like HYDRA would do the same for a guy from our side if the shoe was on the other foot."
"I know. That's what makes our side the right side."
Dum Dum Dugan and Steve Rogers[src]

Rogers has a strong sense of justice and is willing to fight for the right thing, even to his own peril. He had a habit of going off on his own when people were in danger, which often frustrated the Howling Commandos. This often led him to make impulsive decisions and needing to be held back by the other Howling Commandos. This sense of justice also extended to his enemies, as demonstrated by his willingness to save the Tentacle Monster, insisting that doing so made them the heroes.

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

"I'm a super soldier, Dugan... not a super-sailor."
―Steve Rogers[src]

This allowed him several abilities which he used to fight his way through an entire submarine of soldiers and surface it only twenty minutes after diving toward the submarine.

  • Enhanced Strength: Rogers' strength was significantly enhanced to superhuman levels. He was able to infiltrate a submarine from the outside while it was submerged and sealed. He was also strong enough to push the Tentacle Monster.
  • Enhanced Durability: Rogers was able to stand directly underneath an explosion and come out unscathed.
  • Enhanced Speed: When confronting the soldiers in the Leviathan, Rogers was able to swim to the submarine underwater, defeat every soldier in the submarine, and surface the submarine in only twenty minutes.

Abilities[]

  • Master Combatant: Rogers is skilled with combat and able to quickly dispose of an entire submarine full of armed HYDRA agents.
  • Shield Mastery: Rogers has mastered command over his primary weapon, his shield. He is able to use it to avoid getting hit by bullets and can throw it with such strength and accuracy to cut off tentacles from the Tentacle Monster.
