Stephen Strange's Car Crash was a car accident caused by Stephen Strange's lack of concentration while driving his Lamborghini Huracan at high speed on his way to a speaking engagement where he was being honored for his work in neurosurgery.
Background[]
Dr. Stephen Strange was a neurosurgeon working at the Metro-General Hospital in New York City. Being among the best in the world, Strange had won countless awards for his work and contributions in the field. However, Strange was very arrogant and cold to his coworkers, often being seen as a know-it-all. This resulted in Strange having rivalries and disdain for his peers. One coworker he didn't have such rivalries with was Dr. Christine Palmer, his fellow surgeon and former partner. Despite having split up, Strange would frequently invite Palmer to various speaking engagements and ceremonies in the groups and societies he was part of.[1]
Accident[]
On February 2, 2016, Stephen Strange had just finished a shift in the hospital in which he had saved a patient's life using an experimental procedure. He had invited Christine Palmer to a speaking engagement he was to take part in with the Neurological Society, however, she declined, stating that it was only going to be about him.
Strange left alone to the engagement, wearing a tuxedo and one of his many watches, this one being a gift from Palmer. He was listening to Interstellar Overdrive by Pink Floyd in his Lamborghini Huracan, which he was driving extremely recklessly. Strange sped along a cliffside road, passing in no passing zones, and being extremely inconsiderate of the traffic and rainy weather.
Strange's received a call from Billy, his friend and nurse. Billy presented some cases that Strange could take. Strange denied the first two. One was an Air Force colonel with a spinal injury caused by an experimental suit of armor that Strange declined as it was a basic case and not worth his time. The second was an advanced glioma patient that Strange had declined as she was sure to pass away and tarnish his perfect record. Strange was intrigued by the third case, which was an brain implant struck by lighting.
Billy sent Strange the file. Strange looked at it, ignoring his surroundings on the road. The Lamborghini was struck by another vehicle and spun down the road, off a cliff, and just barely missed being submerged after getting caught by a fence. Strange was in agony. The impact forced his hands into the dashboard where they were crushed and pinned until he was rescued. Unable to call for help, the pain, shock, and trauma were too much, and he blacked out.[1]
Aftermath[]
It took several hours before Strange was rescued by helicopter. He was rushed into surgery at the Metro-General Hospital, where he was operated on by Dr. Nicodemus West, his biggest rival. Strange's hands were shattered and suffered serious nerve damage. As a result, he was treated with fixators and stainless steel pins. Despite the treatments and the efforts of the hospital, Strange's hands were seriously damaged with severe, long term nerve damage. This meant that Strange was no longer able to make the careful movements needed for his job as a neurosurgeon, making those days of his life come to an end.
Strange continued to seek out treatments, from visits to an occupational therapist to obscure experimental surgeries. However, nothing worked. Desperate, Strange spent his last dime to go to Kathmandu, Nepal, to seek out a place called Kamar-Taj, where he was told by a fellow paralysis patient that it held a way to cure even the most irreversible of cases.[1]
