References to the Marvel Cinematic Universe

References to Marvel Comics

  • Characters from the comics adapted for the movie in the main cast are Quentin Beck and Julius Dell. Other characters adapted from the comics are Dimitri Smerdyakov, Brad Davis, Zach Cooper, and J. Jonah Jameson.
  • The Elementals are based on minor elemental-based villains of Spider-Man in the comics: Morris Bench/Hydro-Man, Flint Marko/Sandman, Mark Raxton/Molten Man, and André Gerard/Cyclone.
    • Morris Bench, the human alias of Hydro-Man in the comics, is mentioned in a venetian paper as a man involved in a water accident as the possible human identity of the Water Elemental.
  • As part of his cover story, Mysterio identified the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Earth-616 and claimed his home reality as Earth-833; these numbers respectively belong to the main continuity in the comics and the home reality of Spider-UK, while the Marvel Cinematic Universe's actual reality code number is Earth-199999.
  • The mid-credits scene of Spider-Man's secret identity being exposed to the world on television is based around the events of the Civil War event from the comics, where Spider-Man, at the request of Tony Stark, willingly exposed his secret identity to the world in support of the Superhuman Registration Act at a press conference.
    • Mid-credits scene may also foreshadow an event inspired from Identity Crisis story arc from the comics in a possible sequel.
  • During the movie, there are several easter eggs hidden in license plates, just like in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
    • In Ixtenco, the license plate with the number 463 references the first appearance of Sandman in The Amazing Spider-Man #4, released in 1963.
    • In Prague, the license plate ASM28965 alludes to Molten Man's debut in The Amazing Spider-Man #28, released in 1965.
    • In Berlin, Nick Fury's car has the plate MTU83779, referencing Marvel Team-Up #83, released in 1979, which is the first time Peter and Fury team up.
    • In the bridge in London, there is a car with the license plate TASM143, which alludes to the first time Peter and MJ kissed in the comics, in The Amazing Spider-Man #143.

Scrapped Content

  • Jon Watts revealed that they considered the character of Captain Britain to appear in the film, although the idea was scrapped during production.
  • During the European vacation, Peter and his friends were meant to travel to Norway and visit New Asgard.
  • Co-writer Erik Sommers said that the character of Swarm was discussed as being one of the illusions used by Mysterio, back when the team wasn't named the Elementals.
