Sonya is an elite assassin trained in the Red Room and a former member of the Black Widows.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Red Room[]

Sonya was kidnapped as a young child, being selected by Dreykov as a match for his Black Widow Program. At the Red Room, Sonya was subjected to rigorous training in order to become a dangerous assassin. When Melina Vostokoff developed a mind control serum for Dreykov, Sonya was one of its victims, losing her free will to Dreykov.^[2]

Freed from Dreykov's Control[]

After Natasha Romanoff and Yelena Belova brought down Dreykov and the Red Room Academy in 2016, Belova set out on a mission to free the rest of the Black Widows around the world from Dreykov's mind control using the Red Dust antidote. Sonya was one of the Black Widows Belova saved during her quest.^[1]

By 2018, Sonya had joined Yelena Belova on her campaign to free all of the Black Widows from Dreykov's mind control. Together with Belova, she infiltrated the house of Ana with the intent of freeing her using the Red Dust. Ana attacked the Widows, but ultimately Belova managed to pin her to the ground. Sonya held Ana's arms back while Belova sprayed her face with the antidote. However, the antidote had no effect, as Ana was not under Dreykov's mind control but was instead attacking her home intruders of her own volition. Realizing this, Sonya questioned Ana as to how she could afford such an expensive house, to which Ana revealed she was a paid assassin.

Sonya and Belova sat down with Ana, explaining their mission to save the Black Widows to her. Belova stated their goal of freeing all of the Widows and ultimately going on to living normal lives themselves, to which Sonya began teasing Belova for her Sex and the City fantasy that she had for her and her sister.^[1]

Sonya and Ana continued talking as Yelena Belova excused herself to use the bathroom. After sometime, Sonya and Ana found that Belova had disappeared, as they had both survived. Without Belova there to continue their mission and the vials of Red Dust gone, Sonya began to integrate herself into a normal life.^[1]

Sonya is a selfless individual, choosing to assist Yelena Belova in her mission to free the remaining Black Widows from Dreykov's mind control after being freed herself, thus delaying her opportunity to return to having a normal life.

As a Black Widow, Sonya was taught to suppress her emotions and focus only on her mission. By 2018, it seems Sonya had begun to cope with the trauma of being raised as a Black Widow assassin, finding friendship with fellow Black Widow trainees Belova and Ana, and being able to joke about Belova's fantasy life with her sister.

Master Martial Artist: Sonya began training as a fighter at a young age upon being forced into the Red Room.
Staff Mastery: Sonya was trained to master various weaponry as a Black Widow, including staffs.
Knife Mastery: Sonya is skilled at using knives due to her training as a Black Widow.
Master Marksman: Sonya well well-trained in in firearms from her time in the Red Room, using a pistol as her weapon of choice.
Master Acrobat: As a Black Widow, Sonya is flexible and well-versed in gymnastics after her time in the Red Room Academy.
Master Spy: Like all Black Widows, Sonya is a master spy, being trained in the craft since childhood.
Master Assassin: Sonya is a fearsome assassin, being trained and raised to be a killer from an early age in the Red Room.
