- "I did what I had to do. And I let the system take care of the rest–"
"Oh! You and your goddamn system! Christ! So what now? Every day, Bullseye goes to the chow hole, eats his slop, you know he gets to breathe the same air that you breathe. You feel good about that?" - ―Matt Murdock and Frank Castle
Sic Semper Systema is the fourth episode of the first season of Daredevil: Born Again.
Synopsis[]
Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk's darker halves fight to be unleashed.
Plot[]

Hector Ayala's body gets delivered to the coroner's office, as Matt Murdock arrives to find out what happened to his client. Murdock gets told that despite Ayala being shot from close range, the casing was not found on the scene. Angela Del Toro shows up and demands to be able to see her uncle, but Murdock convinces her not to push for it and comforts her. Del Toro is convinced that Ayala was murdered by the New York City Police Department after his involvement and court victory, and Murdock tells her to have faith that Ayala's killer would be found soon.

BB Urich hangs out with Daniel Blake at the club, but Blake tries to excuse himself as he has to go to work next morning. Urich says that Wilson Fisk is working Blake out too much, but Blake admires him and is glad to have such a job. He tells Urich that Fisk has a meeting planned with CleanGreen Haulers about their idea to decrease the garbage output. Urich points out there are union contracts to be considered but Blake says that Fisk has a plan how to circumvent it, before Urich calls a cab for Blake to get him home.

During a therapy session, Heather Glenn asks the Fisk couple to open up about something they avoid talking about, and Vanessa Fisk brings up her affair with Adam. Fisk does not want to talk about Adam, saying that Vanessa betrayed him, but she argues that Fisk was gone at the time and she did not know if he would ever come back. Vanessa opens up about being fascinated by Adam's art skills and Fisk reveals that he had a talk with Adam but makes it clear that he left it at that. At the end of the session, Glenn privately asks Vanessa if she feels safe about her husband, but Vanessa assures her that Fisk would never harm her.

Leroy Bradford gets arrested for stealing caramel corn from the bodega and Kirsten McDuffie calls Murdock to take on his case, as Murdock & McDuffie has a favor to repay. Murdock comes to the detention center to speak with Bradford about his case, but despite the evidence piled against him, he claims to be innocent. Bradford refuses to take a plea and insists on probation, so Murdock approaches Sofija Ozola and convinces her to reduce Bradford's jail sentence down to ten days. Murdock then runs into Connor Powell and accuses him of killing Ayala in retalliation, but Powell claims that he had nothing to do with that and Murdock verifies it as truth by his heartbeat.

Fisk and his assistants arrive at Red Hook Pier, where he presents his project, aimed to fully rebuild the port and revitalize New York City's industry. Sheila Rivera points out that there are bureaucratic hurdles to overcome, not to mention instances of gang violence happening in the area that need to be addressed. Regardless, Fisk is determined to bring the project into fruition and orders Rivera to get through with it one step at a time. Buck Cashman tells Fisk that Five Families are becoming too much of a problem and the havoc would not stop until one of the heads gets arrested or dies.

Murdock tells Bradford that he managed to reduce his sentence but Bradford is not satisfied, to which Murdock harshly tells him that in his case, he cannot expect anything better. Bradford tells Murdock that the last time he served sentence, he missed his Supplemental Security Income appointment and got his benefits cut, which seriously impacted his living conditions. He admits that he stole the caramel corn but only because he could not eat expired supermarket food anymore and Murdock understands why Bradford is so upset.

As Fisk attends a school choir performance, Blake finds The BB Report article about Fisk's recycling project that called him out for union busting, that he told Urich about. He tells Rivera about this and she warns Blake to keep quiet and let her handle this, as she takes the meeting out of the schedule and informs Fisk of what happened. Fisk summons every member of his team to his office, lashing out at them and demanding to know who leaked the information. Blake comes forward and admits to being the one responsible, telling Fisk that he will accept any punishment and will continue to support him in any way he can. Moved by Blake's loyalty, Fisk decides not to fire Blake or Rivera, but warns him that he would not tolerate another mistake.

Murdock arrives at the place where Ayala died and manages to find the casing of the bullet that killed him, adorned with a skull symbol. He meets with Frank Castle at his hideout and shows him the casing, suggesting that Ayala was killed by one of the police officers that idolize the Punisher. Murdock questions why Castle refuses to use his skills to help people but he claims that he already tried and being a hero never suited him. Murdock decides to leave but Castle stops him, claiming that Murdock secretly wants his help to go after those who killed Ayala.
Castle presses him on the guilt he had been trying to hide, reminding him of Foggy Nelson whom Murdock failed to save, although Murdock says that it was not about him. Castle points out that Murdock avoids saying his name and says that Murdock hates himself for failing Nelson and the guilt is eating him from the inside. Murdock eventually lashes out and breaks into tears, as Castle sympathizes with him and recalls how he hears his son's voice all the same and that is why he does what he does. Murdock insists that the system already did its part and Bullseye got a life in prison, but Castle replies that he is still alive, while Nelson is not.

At the dinner, Fisk correctly guesses that Glenn asks Vanessa if she felt safe around him, and she says that while it is the case, she wonders if she should feel safe. Fisk tells her about his father who used to be his role model in everything, but he did not teach Fisk forgiveness, so he struggles to get things back to how they are supposed to be. Vanessa says that she changed and is no longer the woman he knew before, to which Fisk agrees and says that she became something more extraordinary.

Murdock returns home and tells Glenn about his grievances with the system that sent Bradford to Rikers Island for a petty theft. He opens up about his feeling off fighting an unwinnable battle before asking Glenn about her day and she mentions the couple crisis she has been dealing with. Murdock and Glenn have sex with each other and while she sleeps, Murdock goes to the secret stash where he is hiding Daredevil's Suits and practices with his old Billy Club. Meanwhile, Fisk has a dinner at the underground warehouse where he keeps Adam as a prisoner.
As of all of that happens, Muse carries an unconcsious man to his hideout and drains the blood from his body for his next artwork.

Trivia[]
- The episode title is Latin for "thus always to the system." It is a play on the Latin phrase "Sic semper tyrannis" ("thus always to tyrants").
- The bulk of this episode retains material from the original shoot of Daredevil: Born Again.
- While Jeffrey Nachmanoff received directorial credit for this episode, the scenes of Frank Castle and Matt Murdock are directed by David Boyd.[1][2][3]
- David Feige and Jesse Wigutow were given writing credit for this episode, although Dario Scardapane wrote additional scenes.
- This episode marks the first time that Benjamin Poindexter is referred to on-screen as "Bullseye."
- In the pre-overhaul version of this episode, it was structured as a "day in the life of Wilson Fisk" episode, with each scene happening shortly after the previous scene in order to depict how a day of Fisk's life as mayor was.[1]
- Charlie Hudson III is credited as Leroy Mancini, despite his name being stated as Leroy Bradford in the episode.
Behind the Scenes[]
- Unlike the previous two episodes, which retained most of that episode's original footage with only a few new scenes added from the overhaul, this episode contains scenes stitched together from other pre-overhaul episodes, along with new scenes shot during the overhaul.
- The scene depicting the meeting of Frank Castle and Matt Murdock was filmed for Excessive Force, an episode directed by David Boyd. However, during post-production, the decision was made to place those scenes into this episode.[1][3]
- The scene of Castle and Murdock featured in the final version was also reshot.[1] Jon Bernthal's scenes are from the original shoot,[4][5] directed by Boyd,[1][2] although some ADR was added during reshoots. Charlie Cox filmed new scenes without Bernthal, during the overhaul, which were written by Dario Scardapane, and this new footage was mixed into the scene.[1] One of these new scenes included Murdock placing the gun casing with the Punisher symbol onto a desk.[3]
- Due to Bullseye not being part of the original version of the show, and Foggy Nelson having been killed by another individual, Bernthal's line mentioning Bullseye was done via ADR. Another one of Bernthal's ADR lines from the reshoot is Castle referring to the NYPD imitating him as "bullshit fanboys."
- All scenes with Vanessa Fisk were reshot during the creative overhaul. Sandrine Holt portrayed Vanessa in the original version, and therefore the Vanessa scenes needed to be reshot with Ayelet Zurer when she was brought back during the overhaul. The Vanessa reshoots were directed by Jeffrey Nachmanoff.[1][3]
- The BB Report scenes were created and filmed during the creative overhaul.[3]
- The scene of Murdock at the alley, knocking over a bottle of O'Harren's Scotch Whisky and finding a bullet casing with the Punisher logo. The scene was shot in February 2024 and was directed by Nachmanoff.[3]
- The scenes with Wilson Fisk walking by Rabbit in a Snowstorm, Adam being in a cage, and Fisk eating dinner while talking to Adam, were created for the overhaul and were directed by Nachmanoff.[3]
- The scene depicting the meeting of Frank Castle and Matt Murdock was filmed for Excessive Force, an episode directed by David Boyd. However, during post-production, the decision was made to place those scenes into this episode.[1][3]
- Jon Bernthal's scenes in this episode are all from the original, pre-overhaul version of the show,[2][4][5] barring some ADR line additions that were added in reshoots during the series' overhaul. However, Bernthal was displeased with how Frank Castle was portrayed in the original version of the show, and therefore quit the show during production. During the series' creative overhaul, the hiring of Scardapane in addition to Bernthal having creative input on the character's future resulted in Bernthal reprising his role and filming scenes for the post-overhaul episodes.[6]
- When the children choir is singing "We Built This City" to Wilson Fisk, the scene needed to reshot since the producers considered the original performance by the children to be too good and instead needed them to sound off-key.[1]
