"Apologies, ma'am. I'm just having a hard time killing the people we once called friends."
"Once that encoded transmission went out, everything changed. You understand that, don't you? We swore allegiance to each other. And today, that loyalty will be tested."
―Shaw and Victoria Hand[src]

Agent Shaw is a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who took on a deep undercover assignment in Siberia before he was assigned to the Hub. During the HYDRA Uprising he worked with Victoria Hand to maintain the security of the Hub against HYDRA.

"That's all the intel you recovered?"
"I certainly hope so."
"Well, thank you, Agent Shaw, for keeping it safe up there. We'll push this through at the Hub. In fact, we're headed there right now to drop you off."

While undercover in Siberia, Shaw collected intelligence on a weapon built by South Ossetian separatists called the Overkill Device. Shaw hid the intel in a capsule stuck deep into his nasal cavity and awaited extraction. Soon after, an extraction team led by Phil Coulson with Melinda May and Grant Ward arrived to liberate Shaw. After a brief fight, Coulson's Team had Shaw safely aboard the Bus. Once in the air, the intel was removed from his nasal cavity by Jemma Simmons utilizing a Paranasal Extraction Unit. Coulson then brought Shaw to the Hub for debriefing.[1]

While at the Hub, it was discovered that HYDRA had infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D., forcing Victoria Hand to trust only five other agents, Shaw included. When Hand gave the order to kill Coulson's Team and John Garrett, Shaw questioned Hand's orders. Hand invoked that the six of them had pledged loyalty to one another and all traitors deserved death.

As everyone in the Hub was corralled to determine their loyalty, Shaw was with Barbour when he told Hand that Agents Jemma Simmons and Antoine Triplett were not accounted for. Hand ordered the two to continue their search. When the two agents were found, Shaw was one of three agents who held them at gunpoint until Hand could test their loyalty.[2]
