"It's the only thing I've never healed from."
Daimon Helstrom to Gabriella Rosetti[src]

The Shard[1] is a powerful blade that was imbued with demonic power. It was broken in two pieces when Marduk Kurios abducted his daughter Ana, but the two fragments were put back together years later by Ana in order to fight against the demons Kthara and Basar.

History[]

Marduk's Weapon[]

"My scar was a reminder that I was his son. And that I always would be. But the blade was for the future. One half for Ana. One for me. To fulfill our potential."
Daimon Helstrom to Gabriella Rosetti[src]

A weapon of demonic origin and making, the shard was wielded by Marduk Kurios during his time spent as a serial killer on Earth, as he used it to torture and kill his victims.[2]

When Marduk kidnapped his daughter Ana and his son Daimon attempted to stop him, Marduk pinned him on the ground and attacked him with the shard. Upon approaching Daimon's skin, the blade began to intensely heat, and left a scarring wound on Daimon's chest. However, it was eventually broken into two pieces as Daimon struggled against Marduk. Marduk took one half with him, hoping that it would one day be used by Ana as well, and left the other piece at the Helstrom Residence.

Daimon hid the fragment left behind by his father in the house's fireplace.[3] As for the piece that had been taken by Marduk, it was retrieved by Caretaker when he rescued Ana, and kept in his house ever since.[2]

Held by the Blood[]

"We can't keep putting those things in comas. We need something that kills. A weapon of their own kind."
Esther Smith to Caretaker[src]

In an attempt to obtain a weapon able to kill demons, the Blood captured Caretaker, and brought him back to his house, where they tested several blades from his collection, hoping that one of them would react touching a scar on Caretaker's chest, which had been inflicted by a demon. Although Caretaker claimed that he had buried the piece of the shard that he had found when rescuing Ana Helstrom, Esther Smith found the broken shard and confirmed its power on Caretaker.

Smith thus decided to use the shard on one of her priority targets: Daimon Helstrom. Having contacted him and pretended to be willing to negotiate a truce under Caretaker's supervision, Smith gave the shard to Lee, and the members of the Blood were instructed to surround Helstrom and attack him with the shard. However, when Lee attempted to stab Daimon from behind, Daimon used his powers to block the strike and unleashed his powers in a rage, demanding to know how the Blood had acquired the shard, causing Lee to drop it and flee.[2]

Reclaimed by the Helstroms[]

"It's a trap for Daimon. Which means they won't be expecting me. And they certainly won't expect us to have a weapon that could kill Mother."
Ana Helstrom to Louise Hastings[src]

Having reclaimed the shard after the confrontation against the Blood, Gabriella Rosetti gave it back to Daimon Helstrom, who perceived all the demonic energy coming from it. They decided to hide the weapon away, and Daimon informed Rosetti that another fragment of the shard existed and that they had to go and reclaim it as well. Before departing, Rosetti entrusted Louise Hastings with the first fragment for safekeeping.

Ana Helstrom, who had been informed of Daimon's and Rosetti's idea, came to see Hastings and asked her to see the shard. Although she was afraid of the weapon and the effect it had on her, Ana suggested that they should go look for Kthara, who was still possessing Victoria Helstrom, and kill her with the shard. However, Ana explained that she could not hold the shard since it made her feel all the pain suffered by her father Marduk Kurios's victims, and that Hastings would have to deal the striking blow. Hastings, horrified at the idea of having to kill Victoria in the process, initially refused, but then reluctantly convened that there was no other way.

Therefore, Ana and Hastings drove to the Garibaldi II, where they found Kthara. Hastings quickly drew the shard, which surprised the demon who attacked the two women. Hastings then attempted to stab Kthara, but her arm was stopped by the demon, who turned the shard on Hastings before forcing her to stab Ana in the thigh, causing Ana to experience incredible pain. Kthara then threatened that Victoria would suffer the same pain forever should Hastings and Ana use the shard on her body.

Finally deciding that she could not abandon her mother, Ana refused that Hastings used the shard on Victoria and used her powers to disarm her. Hastings picked up the shard again, reminding that it was Ana who had insisted on the necessity to use the weapon in the first place, but Hastings eventually decided to let Ana do things her own way. In the end, Victoria was released from Kthara's possession thanks to Ana smothering her, thus without needing to use the shard.

Meanwhile, Daimon and Rosetti drove to the former Helstrom Residence, where they went through another confrontation against the Blood who was still after the weapon. Once he defeated them and demanded that they stopped coming after him, Daimon retrieved the fragment of the shard from the fireplace where he had hidden it years ago.[3]

Reforged[]

"The weapon, it has to be reforged and its energy reconnected. Just like a circuit."
"And we do that how? Duct tape?"
"It takes fire. And blood. But not just any kind of fire and not just any blood."
Caretaker, Ana Helstrom and Chris Yen[src]

Chris Yen, as the new Keeper, determined that the shard could only be used at its full power in its complete form. Doing so required the demonic fire possessed by the Helstrom children and with her mother's help, Ana Helstrom was able to reforge the shard.

Ana subsequently armed herself with the shard to stop the birth of Kthara and save her brother's life. During a battle with Basar, possessing Daimon Helstrom, the two struggled over control of the shard. Ultimately, Yen restrained the demon with his Keeper powers, allowing Ana to retrieve it. The shard extended into its elongated form and Ana impaled her brother in the back, removing and incinerating Basar's organ, killing him while freeing Daimon. Daimon then used the weapon in a similar way to kill Raum and Magoth, freeing their hosts Joshua Crow and Finn Miller.[4]

Protection Seal[]

"I can keep her from harming others, and herself. But I'm gonna need your help. And your father's knife."
Chris Yen to Ana Helstrom[src]

In order to be able to protect the world from Kthara should she become a renewed demonic threat after her new physical body was born from Gabriella Rosetti, Chris Yen asked Ana Helstrom to carve up a sign on his skull with the now reforged shard. According to Yen, this would enable him to resist the might of Marduk Kurios and his bloodline. As such, when he was later confronted by Marduk who wanted to take Kthara with him, Yen insisted that Marduk could not hurt him, thus forcing Marduk to harm innocent lives to persuade Yen to let Kthara go.[4]

Capabilities[]

"It's powerful enough to dissipate the energy forever. That's why the Blood tried to use it on Daimon. It's a demon killer."
Ana Helstrom to Louise Hastings[src]
  • Demon Killing: The shard is capable of killing demons while leaving their hosts completely unharmed. When this happens, it is surrounded by fire and elongates.
  • Emotion Absorption: According to Ana Helstrom, the shard fed off the suffering and death of the victims killed by Marduk Kurios, with both Ana and Daimon Helstrom being able to perceive this pain upon touching the blade.
