In 1693, during the Salem witch trials, the Salemites brought one of their members, Agatha Harkness, to the woods. She begged to be spared but was tied to a wooden post with magic bonds. Evanora Harkness, her mother, inquired if she was a witch, to which she affirmed.

Evanora responded by saying she had betrayed her coven, stole knowledge above her place and station, had practiced the darkest of magic, which Agatha denied. As the witches readied to kill Agatha, the witch pleaded with them to reconsider, but the ignored her and blasted her with energy beams. Agatha then pleaded with Evanora to stop. Agatha continued to cry until her powers took over and she reversed the effect of the beams onto the witches, killing them.
The Salemites are killed by Agatha Harkness
Agatha broke free of the post, saying that she could be good, but Evanora solemnly told her that she could not. Agatha then absorbed her mother's powers and killed her before taking the brooch off her corpse and flying away.[1] However, Agatha spared the children of the Salemites, but these witches sought to take their revenge on Harkness for her crimes and formed the Salem Seven, whose members acquired an animalistic hive-mind.[2] The Salem Seven were later wiped out themselves during their pursuit of Harkness on the Witches' Road.[3]
