Saint Petersburg, formerly known as Petrograd and Leningrad, is the second largest city in Russia.

Saint Petersburg was the birthplace of the woman who would become the mercenary known as Sofia.
Sofia spent her childhood as an orphan and a runaway on the streets of Saint Petersburg, until she was snatched to Bulgaria by the members of a human trafficking ring.[1]
Melina Vostokoff worked remotely for the Red Room outside of Saint Petersburg on her experiments with chemical subjugation. She was approached by Natasha Romanoff, Yelena Belova, and Alexei Shostakov, who wanted her help taking down the Red Room. Although she at first refused, Vostokoff agreed, and she and Romanoff used Photostatic Veils to switch identities so that when the Red Room came for them, they would believe Romanoff to be Vostokoff and take her to the Red Room Academy.[2]
