- "Long live SERPENT!"
- ―SERPENT Soldier to Sam Wilson[src]
SERPENT, also known as the Serpent Society, is a criminal organization led by Sidewinder.
History[]
Theft of the Solar-Battery Drones[]

SERPENT steal the Solar-Battery Drones
- "You're trapped! With no shield to protect you."
- ―SERPENT Unit Leader to Sam Wilson[src]
SERPENT heard about Solar-Battery Drones being presented by Sam Wilson at a Hero Day festival and decided to steal them. They caused a large explosion on the stage where Wilson was and defeated the guards, stealing the drones and running into a nearby museum. Wilson chased after the soldiers and caught one, tying them up and demanding to know who they worked for. The soldier simply sneered and refused to answer. SERPENT triggered another explosion inside the museum, and Wilson protected people from the explosion before continuing to chase the soldiers. Wilson demanded to know where their leader was, but the soldier simply shouted for their organization to live long as Wilson tied her up. Wilson chased the soldiers to the roof of the museum, where the leader of the unit said that Wilson was trapped without his shield. Suddenly, DJ shouted for Wilson and rolled Wilson's shield over to him, allowing Wilson to pick it up and use it to incapacitate the remaining soldiers, tying them up.[1]
Skirmish at Catedral de Santo Ramos[]

SERPENT fights against Captain America
- "You think SERPENT got played?"
"What are they saying?"
"Same thing. Contract was anonymous. Fifty mil to steal the canister en route to Japan. Show up here and meet the buyer." - ―Dennis Dunphy and Captain America[src]
In 2027, SERPENT were hired by Leader to steal adamantium from a Japanese mining site on Celestial Island. After using some of the adamantium to forge their weapons, SERPENT were tasked with rendezvousing at Catedral de Santo Ramos, where they would wait to meet up with the buyer. SERPENT took the inhabitants inside the cathedral hostage and demanded to know where the buyer was. Captain America arrived to recover the adamantium, so Sidewinder ordered that the adamantium be taken away from their location to keep it from being taken from them. Captain America defeated several SERPENT mercenaries and was able to rescue the hostages using Redwing.

SERPENT is chased down by Falcon
With both Sidewinder and the adamantium getting away in different directions, Captain America deployed Falcon to chase after the mercenaries escaping with the adamantium while he pursued Sidewinder. Falcon quickly neutralized the three mercenaries and recovered the adamantium. Captain America confronted Sidewinder but he managed to escape when Copperhead attacked Captain America. The two fought, and Captain America was able to eventually knock out Copperhead. Soldiers led by Dennis Dunphy arrived and arrested the members of SERPENT defeated by Captain America and Falcon, while Sidewinder managed to escape.[2]
Trivia[]
- In the comics, the Serpent Society is a snake-themed criminal organization.
- In Captain America: Brave New World, the insignia patch worn by members of SERPENT bears the "Serpent Society" name instead, despite the organization being consistently referred to as the former.
Behind the Scenes[]
- Marvel Studios initially announced Captain America: Civil War as Captain America: Serpent Society as a joke during the announcement of the film slate for Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige stated: "We had this great idea because Civil War's first up, right? But we don't blow our wad on the presentation with Civil War right at the front of it. A guy named Mike Pasciullo had the idea to put Serpent Society on there, and I thought it was awesome and hilarious. A part of me thought, 'Are people going to love Serpent Society and think that'd be really cool?' Now it's on the radar."[3]
- Captain America: Brave New World director Julius Onah, SERPENT was always a part of the film's story since he joined the project. However, as the characters dress up as snakes and have snake-like powers in the comic books, which he felt was "over the top" and a "little bit cartoony" for the MCU, Onah and the filmmakers leaned into more grounded and and bit more heightened versions. They took advantage of the reshoots to refine how SERPENT would work in the film, adding Giancarlo Esposito as their leader Sidewinder to make them less fantastical and more grounded.[4]
