The S.H.I.E.L.D. S.T.A.T.I.O.N., acronym for Scientific Training and Tactical Intelligence Operative Network, was a research and development facility operated by S.H.I.E.L.D.

History[]

S.H.I.E.L.D. established the S.H.I.E.L.D. S.T.A.T.I.O.N. in order to conduct investigations on the material retrieved from the ground during the Battle of New York, especially the Scepter that Loki used as a weapon.

Nicholas Cooper, one of the scientists tasked with the study of the Scepter, realized its connection to the Tesseract while reviewing images of how Black Widow managed to close the portal above New York City using the Scepter to deactivate the Tesseract. Cooper tried to make his co-worker Mark Smith realize the same, and told him how he wished to fully understand the connection between the two artifacts.

Cooper reviewed the analysis that Erik Selvig did of the Tesseract, that only began to explain the cosmic forces that worked inside the object, as the Scepter, despite appearing to be innocuous, yielded an unquantifiable energy return.

Cooper also voiced his excitement for working with those items, saying he would have volunteered if he had known the kind of objects they were working with in the Research & Development department. Smith complained that he did not wanted to be there, as he preferred a field assignment, but after working hard for three years in order to be accepted as part of the Helicarrier crew, Maria Hill selected him for a psychological assessment report and he was deemed unfit for the assignment.

One of the security guards overheard Smith's complaints and how he threatened Hill, and left a note in Smith's sports bag while he was training in the gym of the facility in the afternoon. Smith found the note for a meeting in the Hangar SFC-5, where Baron Strucker, offered him a chance to join him in another side of the organization, given Smith's misgivings with the way S.H.I.E.L.D. was being run.

Strucker revealed that, having read Smith's psychological assessment, he realized that he shared a purpose with Smith, wishing to spread the power to the parts of the agency where it could be more effective. However, given that some personnel were making his initiatives unsuccessful, until a time came where they would be able to make their own destiny, Strucker offered Smith the chance to move under his command to provide a greater future for mankind.

Strucker needed Smith to prove his loyalty, so he headed back to the laboratory, where Cooper suddenly realized the connection between the Tesseract and the Scepter was so simple they overlooked it. However, before Cooper could reveal it, Smith killed him and stole the Scepter to take it to Strucker's facility in Sokovia.[1]
