The Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division, better known by its acronym S.H.I.E.L.D., is an American extra-governmental counter-terrorism and intelligence agency, tasked with maintaining both national and global security.
History[]
Foundation[]
S.H.I.E.L.D. was founded by Hank Pym, Janet van Dyne, Bucky Barnes, and Howard Stark.[1] Barnes became a politician[2] and went on to become a respected politician and United States Secretary of State, leading him to continue to oversee S.H.I.E.L.D. in a new capacity.[3] Pym and van Dyne's daughter, Hope van Dyne, worked with S.H.I.E.L.D. using a suit which allowed her to change her size.[1]
Meeting Captain Carter[]

Fury and Barton meet Captain Carter
Seventy years after World War II ended, Nick Fury and Hawkeye were at the Joint Dark Energy Mission Facility in Nevada to see the results of Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S.. When testing with the Tesseract, it opened up a wormhole, causing the remains of the Champion of HYDRA to be released as well as Captain Carter. Confused at who she was, Hawkeye reminded Fury that it was Captain Carter as she asked where Steve Rogers was. Fury explained to her that World War II ended seventy years ago and asked if she'd be okay.[4] eventually joined S.H.I.E.L.D. under Fury's command and became a STRIKE operative, together with Black Widow.[5]
Lemurian Star Operation[]
S.H.I.E.L.D. managed to discover the HYDRA Stomper Armor: Mark II and loaded it onto the Lemurian Star for a transportation, however, the vessel was hijacked by Georges Batroc and his crew. Captain Carter, Black Widow, and the STRIKE team were tasked with retaking the vessel from pirates and securing the shipment. Following a briefing about the mission, Carter ordered Brock Rumlow to lead the STRIKE unit and jumped without a parachute from the Quinjet into the ocean.
Carter successfully boarded the Lemurian Star and subdued all pirates there before engaging in a duel with Batroc. Although Carter blocked most of his attacks, Batroc was able to oppose her due to his combat skills. Suddenly, Carter was approached by Watcher who took her from Carter's universe and recruited her into the Guardians of the Multiverse to fight Ultron.[5] After Ultron was defeated, the Watcher returned Carter into her universe at the moment when she was taken, which resulted in Carter taking a hit from Batroc. Black Widow assisted Carter, electrocuting Batroc with her Black Widow's Bite.
Romanoff later showed Carter the HYDRA Stomper Armor locked away, telling her that there was someone inside it.[6]
