- "They believe only S.H.I.E.L.D. can stop them, so they sent Hunters to destroy S.H.I.E.L.D. and everyone within it."
- ―Jemma Simmons[src]
The Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division, better known by its acronym S.H.I.E.L.D., is an American extra-governmental counter-terrorism and intelligence agency, tasked with maintaining both national and global security. It is currently led by Deke Shaw.
History[]
Foundation[]
S.H.I.E.L.D. was founded in the wake of the victory over HYDRA after World War II, replacing the Strategic Scientific Reserve. Among the founding members of S.H.I.E.L.D. were Peggy Carter and Howard Stark. However, top agent Daniel Sousa began to fear that S.H.I.E.L.D. had been infiltrated by sleeper agents despite their victory and informed the CIA through a formal report.
S.H.I.E.L.D. controlled several facilities in the United States of America, including one which would later be known as Area 51, where scientists developed technologies such as a portable communication device or a EMP Generator.[1]
Project Helius[]
- "You think Helius could be powered up the same way?"
"A Chronicom that's willing to die plus an ion fusion reactor will equal a bomb with a blast radius for miles. If that thing goes off, it could take out..."
"The entire brain trust of S.H.I.E.L.D." - ―Alphonso Mackenzie and Deke Shaw[src]
In 1955, S.H.I.E.L.D. had developed Project Helius, a technology based on an ion fusion reactor which was supposed to provide tremendous amounts of energy, as Pascal Vega thought it could be used to power a space station, even though, according to Gerald Sharpe, S.H.I.E.L.D. actually lacked the necessary equipment to make it function properly. Still, S.H.I.E.L.D. scheduled a test for top operatives to have a glimpse of the technology. On the day of the test, the Area 51 was infiltrated by two S.H.I.E.L.D. agents from another timeline, Phil Coulson and Jemma Simmons impersonating Sharpe and Peggy Carter, as they suspected that the project could be compromised by a Chronicom interference.
Although Coulson and Simmons were arrested after Daniel Sousa discovered their deception, their fears proved to be right as a Chronicom used her abilities to bypass the override for Project Helius and activated the generator, causing a minor earthquake. The S.H.I.E.L.D. visitors were instructed to evacuate to safety while the agents from the other timeline worked to stop the Chronicoms, as one of them impersonated Niles Lindmore. As the first Chronicom was able to plug herself to the Helius generator, which could have caused a massive explosion that would have killed S.H.I.E.L.D.'s top agents and crippled the agency, she was delayed by agents Melinda May and Yo-Yo Rodriguez, gaining enough time for Simmons and Daisy Johnson to activate an EMP Generator that shut all systems down, inclusing Helius, thus averting the catastrophe and saving numerous lives.[1]
In the aftermath of this event, Sousa was tasked with retrieving an item from Lindmore and delivering it to Howard Stark. Due to Lindmore having been killed by Chronicoms, the mission was disrupted by the interference of the other timeline's S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, who knew that Sousa would be assassinated by HYDRA shortly after completing his mission. As Sousa insisted on carrying out his mission nonetheless, he was replaced at the last moment by Coulson who impersonated him. The trickery worked, as Sousa was officially believed to be deceased and became the first S.H.I.E.L.D. agent to have fallen, while he had actually been taken out from his timeline, thus preserving both his life and his legacy and inspiration to S.H.I.E.L.D.[2]
Project Insight[]
- "So, these folks are secretly squids."
"No, just a few at the top are HYDRA. Most are loyal to S.H.I.E.L.D., like Stoner."
"Seems to me the joint is still pretty jazzed about Insight."
"They think it'll keep the world safe. Nobody figures it's a HYDRA plot." - ―Daniel Sousa and Phil Coulson[src]
Over the following years, S.H.I.E.L.D. continued its development, unaware of the still rampant proliferation of HYDRA within its ranks, especially under the influence of Wilfred Malick who had struck a deal with the Chronicom Hunters. In the 1970s, S.H.I.E.L.D. had progressed on a project labeled Insight, which would enable the agency to target and terminate criminals before they were able to act thanks to a network of satellites using laser telemetry, with the command center being based in the Lighthouse. S.H.I.E.L.D. celebrated the advancement of the project during a party held at The Krazy Kanoe safehouse. This alerted the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. from another timeline, for whom Project Insight was not supposed to occur before the 2014, and who therefore approached General Rick Stoner to know more about the initiative.
In 1976, Project Insight was ready for launch under supervision from Stoner, unaware that this would actually help HYDRA remove countless threats to their own organization, including S.H.I.E.L.D. elements. However, the Lighthouse was infiltrated by Phil Coulson and Melinda May, who planned on flooding the Lighthouse to prevent the launch. DUe to this plan being aborted by their Director Alphonso Mackenzie, the Insight rocket was able to be launched, but was eventually destroyed by the other timeline's agents who fired a missile from the Zephyr One, thus effectively terminating the project the day it was enacted. In parallel, Malick was murdered by Deke Shaw, thus ridding S.H.I.E.L.D. of one of its chief infiltrators.[3]
S.H.I.E.L.D. immediately attempted to retaliate by tracking down the Zephyr One and preparing to shoot it down. However, it soom became apparent that they had lost control of the Lighthouse to the Chronicom Hunters, who had begun killing and replacing agents, including agents Ford and King. S.H.I.E.L.D. thus nearly lost Stoner as well, until he was rescued by Coulson and May. Thanks to the intervention from this other timeline's S.H.I.E.L.D., the agency was able to root out the Chronicom infiltrators and retake control of the Lighthouse base, eventually destroying the Chronicom Time Ship buried underneath. Stoner would then be suggested by May to cover up the whole Project Insight incident with a hydrogen wave crisis story.[4]
All Out War[]
- "They're doing it. They're destroying S.H.I.E.L.D."
- ―Phil Coulson[src]
As it kept growing, for example acquiring a new facility known as the Triskelion[5], S.H.I.E.L.D. temporarily discontinued its use of the Lighthouse. However, in 1983, the facility was reused by an unsanctioned faction of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents led by Deke Shaw, known as the Deke Squad, even though Shaw had no authority to form such a group and call them S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. Under leadership of Alphonso Mackenzie, Phil Coulson and Shaw, the group was able to fight against the Chronicom Predictor Sibyl and her Sibyl-Bots, although one of them escaped and stole a Time Stream.[6] In the aftermath of the battle, the members of the Deke Squad were accepted to receive proper S.H.I.E.L.D. training .
The Lighthouse was made operational once again as an official S.H.I.E.L.D. facility shortly thereafter, and the team of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents coming from another timeline was allowed to use it. However, the facility fell under attack by Nathaniel Malick and John Garrett, who were able to kill Jiaying who had been placed under S.H.I.E.L.D.'s protection, and to abduct Jemma Simmons.[5] S.H.I.E.L.D. was then heavily crippled when the Chronicom Hunters, who were allies of Malick and Garrett, initiated a massive and coordinated attack on the agency, causing countless casualties while destroying a number of facilities, including the Triskelion and the Hub.[7] The Lighthouse, while it was still occupied by the other timeline's agents, held on a bit better, but was severely damaged nonetheless after the agents were able to partially thwart Garrett's operation in it.
Despite this devastating setback, a few agents, including Victoria Hand, Brandon Gamble and Grace Mulcahey, were able to survive and followed a distress signal that led them to The Krazy Kanoe safehouse, where they were joined by the other timeline's agents. As many agents had been instructed to bring specific devices labeled as 0-8-4s to the location, it turned out that they had been dispatched by Enoch over the years in order for Simmons, who had been freed from Malick, to assemble a Quantum Tunnel that enabled S.H.I.E.L.D. to bring back Leo Fitz into the timeline.[8] S.H.I.E.L.D. then helped to modify the Quantum Bridge so that it could lead back to the other timeline not only the agents but also the Chronicom fleet threatening S.H.I.E.L.D. Once the operation was succeeded, Shaw, who had to remain behind to activate the device, was appointed as the new Director of the agency.[9]
