―Ruth Bat-Seraph to Sam Wilson[src]

Agent Ruth Bat-Seraph is a former Black Widow and the security advisor of former President Thaddeus Ross. Following an attack on Ross by Isaiah Bradley, Bat-Seraph was placed in charge of the investigation, where she discovered that Bradley had been mind controlled by Samuel Sterns. Bat-Seraph teamed up with Sam Wilson and Joaquín Torres to uncover the truth, and they learned that Ross had been keeping Sterns as his prisoner for years to serve his own goals. Once the truth was revealed, Bat-Seraph personally went to release Bradley from prison, and the two became friends.

Biography[]

This is an in-depth biography of Ruth Bat-Seraph. For an abridged overview, see Marvel Database's article on the same character.

Early Life[]

Black Widow Program[]

"She was born in Israel and trained in the Red Room."
Joaquín Torres to Sam Wilson[src]

Ruth Bat-Seraph was born in Israel, and at a young age was placed in the Black Widow Program, where she was trained to become an assassin for the Red Room. Following the fall of the Red Room, Bat-Seraph was freed from the organization's control and was able to live her own life.[1]

Working for President Ross[]

Security Advisor[]

"Meet Ruth Bat-Seraph. My security advisor."
Thaddeus Ross to Sam Wilson[src]

In 2027, Bat-Seraph was employed by President Thaddeus Ross to be his security advisor, and she became one of his most trusted allies, as she was made aware of Samuel Sterns being imprisoned at Camp Echo One. Bat-Seraph gained a great deal of respect for Ross, not seeing him as the man that he used to be viewed as, but the better person he was trying to become.[1]

Celestial Island World Summit[]

"What do we know?"
"There were five shooters. Isaiah was one of them, as were Secret Service and active military. This was a coordinated terrorist attack, sir."
Thaddeus Ross and Ruth Bat-Seraph[src]

Bat-Seraph attended Thaddeus Ross' summit announcing adamantium. However, they summit was interrupted when Isaiah Bradley shot at Ross. Several other shooters attacked, so Bat-Seraph acted quickly and knocked out some of them. Obtaining a gun, Bat-Seraph went to shot Bradley, but she was stopped by Sam Wilson.

Instead, Bat-Seraph followed after Wilson as he chased down Bradley outside of the White House. Bradley soon stopped running, and Bat-Seraph caught up them them, but Wilson told everyone to stay back as he deescalated the situation. Once Bradley was arrested, Wilson went to speak with Ross, so Bat-Seraph joined them. Wilson wanted to speak with Ross privately, but Ross insisted that Bat-Seraph stayed in the room with them, and he introduced her to Wilson.

Bat-Seraph and Wilson argued about what happened with Bradley, so Ross stopped them and asked Bat-Seraph for a report. She detailed that the attack was coordinated and the song that played was the cue. Wilson wanted to personally investigate the attack, but Bat-Seraph was doubtful about what he could achieve on his own. Wilson claimed that Bradley had no reason to attack, but Bat-Seraph responded that his imprisonment could have made him snap. Ross then gave Bat-Seraph full authority to investigate the attack.[1]

Leading the Investigation[]

"Ruth, you have my full authority to put this thing to bed. Before this treaty gets compromised any further."
Thaddeus Ross to Ruth Bat-Seraph[src]

The next day, Bat-Seraph was informed by Payumo that Sam Wilson had visited Isaiah Bradley in prison, so she watched their conversation through the surveillance system. Once Wilson left, Bat-Seraph thanked Payumo and asked for the footage of the conversation.

On her own, Bat-Seraph accessed the files on the shooters and analyzed the footage from the White House before the attack. Bat-Seraph discovered Bradley's phone flashing light at him, and realized he had been affected. Bat-Seraph returned to the prison to question the shooters, and told Payumo she wanted to speak to them one at a time. However, Bat-Seraph witnessed Payumo execute the shooters and then himself. Bat-Seraph discovered that Payumo's radio was playing the same song that commenced the White House attack.[1]

Moving Isaiah Bradley[]

"You still think I had something to do with all of this?"
"I don't know."
Isaiah Bradley and Ruth Bat-Seraph[src]

Following the execution of the White House shooters, Bat-Seraph decided to move Isaiah Bradley to solitary for his own safety. Bradley was against this, but Bat-Seraph insisted it was for his protection. Bradley questioned if Bat-Seraph thought he was guilty, so Bat-Seraph expressed that she was now unsure. Thaddeus Ross called and told Bat-Seraph that Camp Echo One had been compromised and she needed to investigate immediately.[1]

Saving Sam Wilson and Joaquín Torres[]

"Why are you helping us?"
"Because you were right. I thought that was obvious?"
Sam Wilson and Ruth Bat-Seraph[src]

Bat-Seraph arrived at Camp Echo One, where she discovered a group of mind controlled soldiers closing in on Sam Wilson and Joaquín Torres. Bat-Seraph ordered the soldiers to stand down so she could deal with Wilson and Torres, but the soldiers instead went to attack her. Bat-Seraph swiftly defeated most of the soldiers, using their own electric batons against them, as Wilson and Torres handled the rest.

Bat-Seraph questioned what Wilson and Torres were doing at Camp Echo One before enquiring about Leader's location. Bat-Seraph was filled in on the situation, learning about Leader's revenge plan against Thaddeus Ross. They were found by FBI agents, who arrested Wilson and Torres, so Bat-Seraph attempted to convince the agents to release them into her custody, but they refused. Mr. Blue began playing and the agents opened fire, so the three quickly retreated and managed to escape.[1]

Learning the Truth[]

"Did you know?"
"Of course not. But Ross is not that man anymore."
Sam Wilson and Ruth Bat-Seraph[src]

Arriving in Norfolk, the three met up with Dennis Dunphy, as Sam Wilson trusted him now that Thaddeus Ross wanted him and Joaquín Torres arrested. Torres worked on a program to block Leader's mind control, but Bat-Seraph wondered if anyone else had already been affected, so Torres played the song, confirming they were all safe.

Wilson went to interrogate Sidewinder about Leader, so he told Bat-Seraph to listen in to the conversation. Sidewinder revealed that Ross had been keeping Leader as his prisoner for years to serve his own goals. Bat-Seraph told Wilson that she did not know this, but stated that Ross had changed and that no one should be defined by their past. Discovering Leader's intentions to start a war and put the blame on Ross to ruin his legacy, they left to warn the President, who was at Celestial Island.[1]

Battle of Celestial Island[]

"Sir, you asked me to run this investigation, and the situation is way more complicated–"
"Don't bother with excuses. You had a simple job and you failed."
―Ruth Bat-Seraph and Thaddeus Ross[src]

Flying to the USS Milius, Bat-Seraph told Captain America that she would speak to Thaddeus Ross so that he would listen. However, when they found Ross, he became angry at her working with Captain America and Falcon.

Bat-Seraph tried to explain the situation to Ross, but he immediately cut her off, claiming that she had failed. Suddenly, two US pilots that had been mind controlled attacked the Japanese fleet, Bat-Seraph stayed inside the USS Milius as Captain America and Falcon dealt with the situation. The conflict was resolved, but Falcon was shot out of the sky and crashed into the water, so Bat-Seraph informed Captain America that he had been found and recovered.[1]

Supporting Sam Wilson[]

"Future Congressman James Buchanan Barnes. He's taller in real life, nice smile, too, good amount of teeth, great posture."
"He's a hundred and ten years old."
"I can work with that."
―Ruth Bat-Seraph and Sam Wilson[src]

Joaquín Torres was rushed into surgery, so Bat-Seraph decided to go with Sam Wilson and support him. Bat-Seraph returned to Wilson after getting them coffee, and she passed Bucky Barnes, much to her surprise. Bat-Seraph commented her attraction towards Barnes, so Wilson noted how old he was, which Bat-Seraph replied that she could work with, making them both smile.[1]

Duel of Washington, D.C.[]

"Ruth, I need you to clear Hains Point. I'll lure Ross there."
"Sam, are you crazy? He'll kill you."
Captain America and Ruth Bat-Seraph[src]

Sam Wilson went to get some air, leaving Bat-Seraph in the room alone. Bat-Seraph watched the news and witnessed Thaddeus Ross losing control during a press conference, which resulted in him transforming into Red Hulk, so she went to help. As Captain America fought Red Hulk, Bat-Seraph despatched two drones to assist and alerted Captain America. However, Red Hulk quickly destroyed the drones, which only made him angrier.

Captain America asked Bat-Seraph to clear Hains Point so that he could lure Red Hulk there to avoid further destruction and potential casualties. Bat-Seraph warned Captain America that Red Hulk could kill him, but he had Red Hulk chase him anyways. Bat-Seraph made her way to Hains Point after Captain America released a powerful wave of energy to stop Red Hulk. Bat-Seraph helped Captain America up, but Red Hulk also got back up. Bat-Seraph witnessed as Captain America got Red Hulk to transform back to Ross.[1]

Releasing Isaiah Bradley[]

"I got Ruth and me tickets for tonight's game, courtside. It's the least I could do for gettin' me out."
"You know, I'm happy you found a friend as grumpy as you are to go to games with."
Isaiah Bradley and Sam Wilson[src]

Bat-Seraph informed Sam Wilson that Leader had been arrested and taken to the Raft, and she told Wilson that he should go to the hospital. Wilson wanted to first get Isaiah Bradley released from prison, so Bat-Seraph went with him and personally handed Bradley his suit and told him they needed to fill out some paperwork before he was finally free. As a thanks for getting him released, Bradley invited Bat-Seraph to a basketball game, which she accepted.[1]

Personality[]

"Do you need an escort?"
"Think I'll be just fine, thanks."
―Receptionist and Ruth Bat-Seraph[src]

Hardened from her experiences in the Red Room, Bat-Seraph presents herself with a serious, no-nonsense demeanor. Being incredibly capable in her skills, Bat-Seraph exudes confidence in her own ability, making it clear that she did not need an escort while visiting the prison and reacting to having to fight a group of mind controlled soldiers as a mild inconvenience rather than a legitimate danger for her. Bat-Seraph does not allow any personal reasons to dictate how she views others, not wishing to be defined by her own past, which is why she was able to look past Thaddeus Ross's controversial history and see the better man he wanted to become. When she learned that Isaiah Bradley was not responsible for attacking Ross, she knew she could trust Sam Wilson, despite disagreeing with him earlier, and had no issue admitting that he was right. Although very dry and professional, once she trusts someone, Bat-Seraph is able to engage on a more familiar level, like talking openly about her attraction to Bucky Barnes with Wilson, and even going to a basketball game with Bradley.
