Early on in his career, Phil Coulson was tasked with retrieving an unknown object from the Burkov Mining Facility. Unbeknownst to him, Melinda May had requested to serve as Coulson's back-up for the mission and was the one who eventually retrieved the object while Coulson was holding off SVR agents.
