- "I didn't write those songs, Ronnie."
"Not even 'Walk Like an Egyptian'?" - ―Deke Shaw and Ronnie Chang[src]
Ronnie Chang is a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and a member of the Deke Squad.
Biography[]
Band Member[]
- "Tommy and Ronnie Chang, a.k.a. the Chang Gang. Both masters of disguise, not to mention, total honeypots."
- ―Deke Shaw to Alphonso Mackenzie[src]
Along with his brother Tommy Chang, Ronnie became a member of the band assembled by Deke Shaw under the name of the Deke Squad after Shaw was stranded in 1982. Secretly, Ronnie and Tommy were trained by Shaw to become S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, and used to live in the Lighthouse along with the other members of the team. Ronnie and his brother were disguised by Shaw as masters of disguise, and were amazed by the stories Shaw told them about Alphonso Mackenzie, to the point that Ronnie tried to imitate his fighting style.[1]
First S.H.I.E.L.D. Mission[]
- "Hey, Lug-Nuts. Say hello to the Deke Squad."
"That was so badass."
"I know, Ronnie. I know." - ―Deke Shaw and Ronnie Chang[src]
In 1983, Ronnie finally got the opportunity to meet Alphonso Mackenzie, to whom he expressed his utter admiration. He then took part in a training session designed by Deke Shaw, nicknamed the "Gauntlet", which was supposed to demonstrate that the Deke Squad was combat ready. However, Ronnie tripped and fell, accidentally shooting a paintball at Roxy Glass in the process. Ronnie then heard Mackenzie heavily criticizing Shaw for his behavior and the lack of skills of the Deke Squad before leaving.
Ronnie and Tommy Chang attempted to comfort Shaw, but to no avail, as he even admitted that he had not written the songs that had made the band famous. However, a much pressing threat arrived in the Lighthouse: Sibyl-Bots, sent by the Chronicom Sibyl to retrieve the Time Stream. Ronnie and his friends were almost killed by the robot that had previously killed Cricket and Tawni and defeated Olga Pachinko, but were saved by Mackenzie and Glass who destroyed the robot.
Thrilled at the idea of Mackenzie joining them, Ronnie and Tommy were instructed by their new director to search the Lighthouse for more Sibyl-Bots, but could not find any. Still, the team was able to ambush one of them later, and Ronnie and Tommy fired at it to force it to move back onto a bomb placed by Pachinko, which detonated and destroyed the robot. However, another one arrived, which was controlled by Sibyl herself. Upon seeing the robot firing laser beams, Ronnie and Tommy hid from it, and later fled the battle.
Ronnie and Tommy returned considerably embarrassed to Shaw after the Deke Squad had defeated the rest of the Sibyl-Bots, declaring themselves unworthy of belonging to the band. However, they were reassured by Shaw that they still had their place in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s ranks. Later, as Mackenzie was reunited with Yo-Yo Rodriguez and Melinda May, Ronnie was proudly introduced to these new S.H.I.E.L.D. colleagues.[1]
