"Ronan and his forces attacked, bringing Xandar to the verge of destruction. Out of options, Nova Prime made a desperate call."
Nebula[src]

Ronan decided to invade Xandar. Using the Dark Aster, Ronan traveled to Xandar, where he faced resistance from the Nova Corps and the Nova Prime, Irani Rael. To prevent the Dark Aster from reaching the ground, Rael had a planetary shield enclose Xandar, protecting it from Ronan, but condemning the Xandarians to 50 years of isolation.[1]

"Ronan is entering the atmosphere as we speak. You can't stop this, but it's not too late to join me."
"No, I think it is."
Irani Rael and Nebula[src]

Five years later, Nova Prime Irani Rael made a deal with Ronan where she would open the planetary shield for him and surrender in exchange for Ronan allowing her to remain in charge of Xandar under his rule. Ronan accepted the deal and Rael tricked Thanos' surviving daughter Nebula into helping her retrieve the codes to the shield generator. However, Nebula had anticipated Rael's betrayal and thus put her own twist on the codes. As the Dark Aster entered the planet's atmosphere, the shields quickly began to close once again. The Dark Aster was caught between the two halves of the closing shield and it was destroyed, killing Ronan and ending his reign of terror.[1]
