- "Twenty minutes of courage, lads. Then we got 1.8 mil and that fat bastard's off Luca's back. Now, let's have some fun."
- ―Devlin[src]
The Robbery of New York Mutual Bank was a robbery planned by Luca in order to pay his restitution to Viktor. The heist, which was executed by Devlin, was foiled by the New York City Police Department with help from Matt Murdock.
Background[]
- "All this arguing, bloodshed, chaos... It's getting in the way. 1.8. That's the number."
"Oh, yeah? I got a better idea. How about I pay zero dollars to Viktor, and you go tell Fisk if he's got something to say to me, he can come tell me himself?" - ―Buck Cashman and Luca[src]
As tensions within the Five Families kept rising, Luca told Viktor that everyone passing through his territory is required to pay a toll. Vanessa Fisk interjected and reminded Luca that Red Hook was exempt from any tolls or tariffs, trying to maintain peace within the families.[3] However, when one of Viktor's trucks was passing through Red Hook Pier, Devlin showed up and demanded the driver and the henchmen to hand over the keys and their wallets to him. Viktor's henchmen was angered by Devlin's audacity and tried to pressure him into backing down, which resulted in Devlin shooting both him and the driver.

The double homicide that occurred at the pier became a serious trouble for Wilson Fisk, who had been working on a Red Hook Pier redevelopment project. Vanessa attempted to resolve the situation on her own to prevent further bloodshed, so she sent Buck Cashman to speak with Luca and Viktor. Cashman informed Viktor that Luca owed him $1.8 million in restitution for Devlin's botched hijacking, which pleased Viktor, but Luca was furious and refused to pay out. As the two kept arguing, Cashman claimed that it was not up to a debate and Luca would have to pay whether he liked it or not. Luca was angered at Cashman bossing him around, demanding Kingpin to talk to him in person, but Cashman dismissed him.[4]
Robbery[]

Red and Yellow enter New York Mutual Bank
- "All right! No need to explain what this is. You've all been to the movies. This can go a couple of ways. You stay where you are, you keep your heads down, keep your traps shut, you stay out of our way and we'll stay out of yours. Easy. Everybody goes home and everybody has a wild story to tell."
- ―Devlin[src]
In order to pay the restitution, Devlin and his men planned to rob New York Mutual Bank and steal a valuable diamond for the vault, sending in Selene to act as their woman on the inside. Concealing their faces with masks, the robbers cut the power at the building and got in, threatening the bank workers and civilians, taking them as their hostages. Yusuf Khan attempted to sneak out into the office and contact the New York City Police Department, but was soon found by Blue and forced to join other hostages at the foyer. Matt Murdock, who walked out of the bank right before the robbery, heard the commotion and rushed back in to help people, asking Kirsten McDuffie to call the police.

Matt Murdock joins other hostages
Murdock casually walked into the bank, playing up his blindness, so the robbers took him to other hostages and locked the doors. Talking to Khan, Murdock listened to the terrified hostages praying and pleading for their lives, noticing that Selene's heartbeat was way too calm for such an extreme situation. Devlin addressed the hostages and said that everyone must stay down and not make any reckless moves if they want to live, to which Murdock interjected and claimed that Devlin could face 25 years or a life sentence if he kills anybody during a robbery. Devlin scoffed and told Red to hit Murdock as a warning to other hostages that the robbers do not appreciate anyone speaking out of line.

Devlin tells Yusuf Khan to open the vault
Devlin then demanded Steven Aldrich to come out so they could get to the vault, but as nobody came forward, the NYPD responded to McDuffie's call and arrived at the bank. Realizing that Aldrich was absent, Devlin approached Khan and asked if he was able to open the vault, and a nervous Khan lied that he could, out of fear that Devlin could kill him. As SWAT started to pull in, Devlin ordered Red to watch the hostages, while Blue would take Khan to the vault and Devlin would handle the police. Murdock overheard Devlin talking about their plan and talked to Khan, correctly guessing that he lied about having access to the vault and asking Khan to stall as long as he could, so he could deal with the robbers.

As SWAT surrounded the bank, Angie Kim assumed the command and acted as a hostage negotiator, while Rodriguez gave her a rundown on their situation. She communicated with Devlin, informing him that they had the bank surrounded, and Devlin demanded three armored APVs to be delivered to the bank for their getaway in less than 30 minutes or he would start executing the hostages. Kim noted that the time window was way too narrow and told Devlin to release a couple of hostages out as a sign of good faith. Devlin agreed and chose Belinda and Murdock, although the latter asked Devlin to keep him in and instead release Keith, Belinda's husband.

Matt Murdock fights Red
Devlin initially dismissed his suggestion, expressing his disdain towards attorneys and said that all he wanted was to get rid of Murdock, but he kept insisting on letting the couple out instead of him. The two had a brief talk about Murdock's Irish roots and his past life in Saint Agnes Orphanage, and Devlin agreed to let Belinda and Keith out, taking an interest in Murdock. As Blue took Khan to the vault, Murdock heard Johnny Santini talking to Selene about the bank not holding any cash and instead having safety deposit boxes for various valuables. Murdock then asked to be let into the bathroom and Red reluctantly guided him there at a gunpoint. While Khan stalled as he was told, Murdock waited for an opening and managed to incapacitate Red without alerting other robbers, taking Red's mask with him.

Matt Murdock and Yusuf Khan find the diamond
Blue soon realized that Khan had no way to open the vault, threatening to shoot him, but Murdock rushed in just in time and saved Khan by knocking Blue out. Devlin then contacted Blue on his radio to check his status, so Murdock managed to fake an Irish accent to throw him off their trail for the time being. Murdock claimed that they cannot go back empty-handed and needed something to buy them time, so Murdock used his enhanced hearing to open the vault. Using a key they found on Blue, Khan opened the deposit box inside the vault, where he found a diamond that Devlin and his men were after.

Devlin taunts the New York City Police Department
Devlin kept talking to Kim who claimed that the police cannot bring the vehicles in time, due to the roads being blocked by a crowd celebrating St. Patrick's Day. had no interest in the excuses but decided to play around and taunted the police by agreeing to give her some more time if she could make him laugh with a joke. Kim scrambled to ask other officers for any joke but they got nothing, so Kim quickly came up with a crass joke about a priest and a leprechaun. Devlin actually laughed at her joke and told Kim that she had ten minutes before he would start killing the hostages. Rodriguez then made a decision to prepare for the raid, despite Kim warning him that the civilians might get caught in the crossfire.

The New York City Police Department takes down the robbers
Murdock and Khan then returned to the foyer and as Devlin held them at a gunpoint, Murdock said that he was running out of time and needed to release the hostages while he still could. Murdock claimed that the police was no longer negotiating with him, meaning they were preparing for a raid, but Devlin replied that he could convince them that he was serious by killing a hostage. Murdock then showed him a diamond he was after, holding in a standoff before quickly replacing the diamond with a candy and throwing the pouch to Devlin. At that moment, SWAT entered the bank and engaged in a confrontation with the robbers, while the hostages desperately scrambled to get out of the way. As Murdock was able to knock Yellow out, SWAT successfully neutralized Purple without any casualties, while Devlin slipped away from the scene.

Matt Murdock neutralizes Devlin
Devlin then changed into a fake NYPD uniform he was hiding under his clothes and exited the bank, giving the pouch with the diamond to Selene and instructing her to go to Luca. Leaving the police to handle the situation at the bank, Murdock put on Red's mask and went after Devlin, engaging in a fight with him. Although Devlin was able to hold himself in combat, Murdock was able to slam his face on a broken bottle and broke his leg, before knocking him out. As Devlin was taken out of commission, Selene checked the pouch he gave to her and found the candy that Murdock replaced the diamond with.[2]
Aftermath[]

Yusuf Khan recovers the stolen diamond
- "The police told me they never found the diamond. The lead robber didn't have it. None of the robbers did."
- ―Yusuf Khan to Matt Murdock[src]
The New York City Police Department took Devlin and his associates into custody, although upon searching them, they failed to find the diamond. On the next day, Matt Murdock returned to New York Mutual Bank and had a talk with Yusuf Khan, accepting his invitation to a family dinner in Jersey City. Murdock then sneakily left the diamond he still had on him at the candy bowl for Khan to find and exited the bank.[2]
