- "S.H.I.E.L.D. has been infiltrated by a HYDRA cell, aided by sentient time-traveling aliens."
"STTAs? Synthetic or organic?"
"A combination of both, actually."
"Sounds problematic." - ―Phil Coulson and Rick Stoner[src]
General Richard Andrew "Rick" Stoner was a high-ranking S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who was tasked with heading up Project Insight with Wilfred Malick. However, once Project Insight was destroyed during its launch, Stoner arrested Phil Coulson and Melinda May, believing them to be responsible, only to learn that they had actually been fighting a war against the Chronicoms, as Stoner assisted them in this conflict.
Biography[]
Early Career[]
Meeting Daniel Sousa[]
- "I remember when he was an enlistee. Poor kid couldn't tell a mag from a clip."
- ―Daniel Sousa to Phil Coulson[src]
Once Rick Stoner had enlisted into the U.S. military, he was trained by Daniel Sousa, who found himself frustrated by Stoner's lack of skill, and would note that Stoner could not tell part of the guns apart. During Stoner's training, he gained the nickname of "Little Ricky".[1] Despite his troubled beginnings, Stoner eventually became an officer with the Army, as he rose up through the ranks until he eventually became a general. He was eventually transferred to S.H.I.E.L.D., where he served as one of its highest-ranking and most respected agents.[2]
Project Insight[]
Celebration with S.H.I.E.L.D.[]
- "Want to buy a girl a drink?"
"Well, pardon me, miss, but as a commanding officer, purchasing you an alcoholic beverage would be a violation of HR guidelines. However, if you need assistance, I would be happy to use my privilege to flag down a server." - ―Melinda May and Rick Stoner[src]
In 1973, Stoner and Wilfred Malick started a project planning on sending satellites to the sky so that they could eliminate hostiles before they become too dangerous. At a celebration for this, Stoner introduced Malick to everyone and Malick announced the plan.
Stoner was at the bar when Agent Chastity McBride approached him asking if he could buy her a drink. Stoner said that would be unprofessional of him. McBride said that she admired that and hoped to work with him one day, from a professional standpoint. She then asked when Project Insight was launching. Stoner said he wished he could launch it that day, but it was three years away.[1]
Destruction of Project Insight[]
- "So, sucker punching me wasn't enough. You're saboteurs. Your friends blew up my rocket. On the Fourth of July."
"You didn't want that thing to reach orbit, General. You would have found that out the hard way."
"Because time-traveling robots would have turned their deadly lasers upon the Earth?" - ―Rick Stoner and Phil Coulson[src]
On July 4, 1976, Stoner walked through the Lighthouse in preparation for the launch of Project Insight. He happily saluted to his colleagues, wishing them a happy bicentennial. Stoner walked in and saw the Insight progress, happy with it. Ford then told him that they had the green light to launch.
As the launch was about to commence, Stoner was approached by Chastity McBride and a man. He noted that he thought he would never see her again, but asked who the man was. The man simply explained that HYDRA was infiltrating the launch and they were led by time-travelling aliens. Stoner asked if they were synthetic or organic and said it was problematic. However, he did not truly believe them. McBride then walked up to him and knocked Stoner out.[1]
Stoner woke up and grabbed cold meat to put on his wound. He then found out that the missile was destroyed. Coulson and McBride were brought into his office and Stoner scolded them for sabotaging the launch. Coulson assured him that he did not want those missiles to fire, but Stoner still did not believe the claim. He then told McBride that they were destined for a celebratory barbecue, but then realized McBride probably was not her name. McBride told him it was Melinda May.
Suddenly, Ford said that tracking had found the threat. Stoner was happy and exclaimed that Wilfred Malick had installed an advanced tracking system. However, the alarms started going off, signifying a lockdown. Stoner urgently demanded who set it off as he did not. Then the missiles locked on to the threat. Coulson claimed that it was the Chronicoms. Stoner demanded Ford to stop the missile launch, but they were too late.[3]
Rescued by S.H.I.E.L.D.[]
- "Thank you for saving my skin. That is literal. I'd like to buy you a beverage of your choice if that is a welcome gesture."
"HR rules frown on it."
"As a saboteur, you don't technically report to me, Melinda." - ―Rick Stoner and Melinda May[src]
Stoner took Phil Coulson and Melinda May into custody and interrogated them. Curious, he asked what he would be looking for if he hypothetically believed their claim about the Chronicoms. Coulson told him they do not act like Humans, but steal faces to blend in. However, Stoner still did not believe him.
Stoner was then brought into a room by King and Ford. However, when he got in, he was knocked unconscious. Stoner woke up in a Cerebral Fusion Machine to see Coulson and May had defeated the Chronicoms. Stoner immediately said he believed them. He then looked at his friend's stolen faces, saddened. The threat was soon neutralized and Stoner talked to May on the way out. They shook hands and May told him what he should say as a cover story.[3]
